Not really the same thing.
If you rent a car it usually stipulates that you have to use it within the bounds of the law and NOT take it to a superspeedway and drive 150+mph.

But in this case you are being charged for 8 cpus, but then get kicked off the service if you use the 8 CPUs.
On Amazon AWS you buy an 8 CPU instance, you get to use all 8 at 100%
Same on Windows Azure and Google Cloud.

Otherwise, you'd rent a station wagon.

Gigawatt- can you go into detail about how linode handled things? Did they just boot you without warning /communication? Curious as I still have 8 cores running with them but have not had any disruption...yet. Have immature blocks there that I should probably address before I lose them

There was a "resource abuse ticket" opened for using 800% CPU on a handful of VPS. They shutdown the servers for safety and sent a notice saying that I needed to not use so much CPU because 1) it's against their Acceptable Usage Policy and 2) it was affecting other nodes on the same hardware. I could either cut back on CPU usage or (they phrased it much nicer) close up shop for a refund.

I deleted the servers which added the remaining time as account credit, then had the credit re-applied back to my bank account by sending them a note.

And that was the end of that.

edit: myhosting looks good, but their AUP will eventually catch up to you: see section 11.t

Check the computers BIOS and OS clocks are correct. Some OS refer to the BIOS and others refer to other time sources, it depends. It must be accurate for most crypto clients to work correctly.

Also, downloading and indexing the blockchain is intensive on CPU, memory, and especially disk IO. If there is a hardware instability problem or a driver issue with the chipset, you might find it 'just stops working', crashes, or BSODs. I realize if you are running on VPS this may be difficult to test.

How many connections? Sometimes it just hangs, especially on first run. Will happen with all daemons, though.
If you lose connections (can use "getpeerinfo" to see). If you have multiple vps's, you can add them as nodes to download from. i.e. "primecoind addnode 10.244.27.72 add"

I have 8 connections all the time. I don't lose connections. I added about 40 nodes in primecoin.conf that I've found on the Internet. Also I included my other VPS. I have switched firewall off and P2P port 9911 is open and accessible from the Internet. Tail from debug.log:

Yeah it is pricey, even with spot pricing, but yeah you do get what you pay for. Which is more than I can say for most. I have no regrets with my mining operation there Grin

Based on my experience cc2.8xlarge are a huge waste of money (at this point). Even though they throw out huge numbers, I find you get better returns on a large # of smaller ones. Of course the ROI is getting to be tiny on EC2 so it is likely a moot point now ...

Just a proof of concept to myself. Only going to cost me ~$5 to test it and I've mined a block so far, so I'd call it break even at worst.

The lot of them are running at ~50 chains/day in case anybody is curious.

Based on my experience cc2.8xlarge are a huge waste of money (at this point). Even though they throw out huge numbers, I find you get better returns on a large # of smaller ones. Of course the ROI is getting to be tiny on EC2 so it is likely a moot point now ...

Edit: As the diff increased it will likely better to use cc2.8xl which is annoying (lower # of machines tends to make for unlucky streaks)

Linode really didn't like me having CPUs running at 800%, so they put an end to that.
At least they gave me a refund though.
