You understood correctly. The first high-throughput public blockchain platform designed to scale to thousands of transactions per second. It brings the theory of sharding to practice with its novel protocol that increases transaction rates as its network expands.
Sharding - splitting large data into parts (fragments) by certain attributes and algorithms in order to significantly speed up access to the desired data.
What about "what is the ZIL token for?":
This token grants holders the right to use the platform, payment for sending transactions, as well as performing intellectual contracts. Zilliqa has a final offer volume of 21 billion tokens.

Zilliqa is trying to solve for the scalability problem in blockchains using a technique called sharding. but ethereum also doing same in coming months
What about Zil vs Ethereum!? I found this information:
"• Transaction rate: The Ethereum blockchain protocol has a transaction rate of around 10 tx/s. ZILLIQA is currently 250 times of that.
• Consensus: Ethereum uses PoW for consensus, ZILLIQA uses pBFT for consensus. PoW in ZILLIQA is used only to establish identities to prevent Sybil attacks. Once identities are estab- lished, the network can reach consensus on several blocks in a row. This makes PoW more efficient as a new PoW is not required per block as in Ethereum.
• Smart contracts: ZILLIQA will also be different from Ethereum in terms of smart contracts. The basic difference comes from the fact that ZILLIQA’s underlying smart contract language will not be Turing-complete.
• Finality: ZILLIQA’s consensus protocol gives finality. This means that no confirmation is required. This is different from PoW-based consensus in Ethereum where temporary forks can occur and hence a certain number of confirmations are required to have a cushion against double spends.
• Scalability: Ethereum is exploring how to do PoS securely and effectively in its future versions. ZILLIQA takes a different approach with sharding for an accelerated path to scalability. We will try to be compatible with Ethereum wherever possible wrt mining, smart contract language, etc.
• Mission: ZILLIQA has a specific mission to support high-throughput dApps that need to leverage the properties of a blockchain: openness, accountability, and transparency, etc. ZILLIQA will focus on supporting those dApps requiring high throughput or high volume. Some of the existing dApps on Ethereum may benefit from ZILLIQA, but we do not expect those to be the majority."

It lools like ico price in ETH was same - it s 0.0000084656 ETH.
But in USD it s differ from 0.38 to 0.81 cents - because of ETH price fluctuation, i think.

We can watch few markets where changes are slight in values in comparison to many others. Zilliqa's price have huge support to sustain its value in fiat whereas against Bitcoin is to staying intact. Large supply sometimes seems issue to me as well but there must be reason if they chose this large supply. I don't have technical knowledge may be this is helpful in scaling issue for what Zilliqa is created.
