That was truly a big win, a historic moment as it marked the first time the Philippines defeated New Zealand. Now, the question is, what’s next for Gilas? If I were to choose, I’d like to see them take on Australia. This team has a history of dominating us, even sparking a brawl on our home court in the past, something we definitely don’t want to see again. I’m not sure when they’ll face each other next, but I hope the current Gilas lineup can rise to the occasion and give Australia a serious challenge.

This qualifying games scheduled for NZ and Hongkong if I remember it right, they might meet again after we secure our spot to the next round, those where the days when Gilas is more on puso and experienced, very far from the current squads where competition at is best and everyone are really showing their skills when given the chance to play inside the court.

And knowing coach Tim, the chance of beating AU is no longer a dream, we do have the caliber players who can compete though still dominance in terms of stats but given that chance, Gilas may give them pain in the ass.

The funny thing about New Zealand is that their team captain can't accept the fact that they were defeated.
He tweeted that there's a cooking from the referee and because the Gilas are on our turf. What a guy, can't accept defeat. It's not always that a not so strong that keeps on trying will remain on the bottom.

He realized he made a big mistake by whining on Instagram. It’s unsportsmanlike, he should’ve just accepted the loss as losing is part of the game, and sometimes the ref’s calls don’t go your way. It happens to every team, even Gilas, but you’ve got to be man enough to take the defeat.

Now, his comments are gone. He deleted them.

After their loss to Gilas Pilipinas, New Zealand's captain blamed the referees but later deleted the comment.

Gilas Pilipinas stuns New Zealand for the first time, inches closer to FIBA Asia Cup ticket

Quote
Gilas Pilipinas continued to flash its brilliance this year after beating New Zealand for the first time, 93-89, in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers on Thursday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

This was their first time, so it’s definitely worth celebrating... Gilas had an amazing second half, they made great adjustments. Their ball movement stayed strong, and Scottie Thompson, wow, this guy is special. He’s knocking down outside shots now, but his trademark aggressiveness on rebounds hasn’t gone anywhere.

Did anyone place bets earlier? If I remember right, the line was +3.5 for Gilas.

Congrats Gilas ! As mentioned it was the first time that we are able to beat that team, if I recall it right we are 0-4 against New Zealand, but like how coach Tim describes his squad he mentioned that the gilas players are far different they have the heights and the skills, they are all competitive and dedicated to win, one more game to complete this qualifying stage, it's really nice to see how the players are working and how they blend their chemistries inside the court. Good job Gilas !
Imagine if they stayed on Coach Chot instead of replacing him with Coach Tim? We might not defeat the Tall Blacks, and at the same time, we will lose by a significant number. Cheesy

Well, it's the first time after 8 years that the Gilas defeated the Tall Blacks and I'm happy with their win as well. I mean who doesn't? If you're a fan of the team right now, you should be happy. Let's give credits first to Coach Tim Cone for fixing the team, finding better players and balancing it to a point where the team has it all from defense, offense, height, etc. As for that game, let's give credits to all players, but special mention to Kai Sotto for doing it all and he almost got a triple double as well. Of course, JB is a no exception even though he missed his last 2 free throws in the final seconds of the game before hitting the final 2 shots.

I didn't put a bet though, but I could've gone all-in on Gilas for sure. Their next game will be against HongKong and this is a perfect time for Brownlee and others to have a long rest because I believe they can defeat them easily.

We don't need experienced I guess as it was the usual scenario when coach Chot still the one who's handling the team, now with coach Tim that experienced already converted to a competitive mindsets, looking how the Gilas play the tall blacks they've surprised them as they can't bullied the Gilas inside anymore, just so lucky that most of those outside shots has been converted if not we might win the game with a double-digit deficits.

Hopefully they will continue playing as one and those who are stepping up will continue to be ready when the call is needed, and those who are still in limited playing time looking forward for them to showcase their shared talent and skills when the time comes for them, still aiming to see KQ and Tamayo getting that minutes together with Kai.

I saw on my social media feed that the team captain of Tall Black was blaming the referee for their loss, he said that it was a cooking home court show hehe.

That’s classic sore loser energy right there. They thought they were unbeatable against Gilas, but last night’s game proved otherwise. They gotta understand that this was a different Gilas, and Kai Sotto has stepped up big time. He’s more physical inside, makes smarter shot selections, and is really showing growth.

Mate I gotta say, I’m impressed with this young man. Playing in Japan has clearly help him improve his game. If he keeps this up, who knows? Maybe one day we’ll see him living his NBA dream. The potential is definitely there, and I’m rooting for him to make it happen.

I didn't place a bet on that game as i doubted that Gilas would defeat the ranked #22 New Zealand, i think that it was a waste of money throwing some dollars for the Nationals but i'm wrong. Coach Tim Cone continued its coaching brilliance on the Gils team and the players seems inspired of his coaching ability.

I don't think that this will affect his team. There will be schedules done on that and I'm sure LA is willing to adjust with ever conflict with schedules in there. To be honest, he should be focusing on honing the young talents and contribute more in there since he has been into championships and contribution to global competitions. He should pass on the torch but I know that he can still play.
I agree with you, LA Tenorio has been playing under the San Miguel Ginebra team since 2012, so it is already 12 years. For sure he and the management are also holding LA Tenorio, we all know how big an impact he is having on the team but it still makes sense because LA Tenorio was also an assistant coach for Letran from 2019-2022.
That's why he'll be more effective as a guide to the young ones. He'd surely do his best with his involvement with a different role now.

LA Tenorio's years in the PBA is already numbered, i mean he is close to retirement now and Ginebra is preparing for that as they are grooming RJ Abarrientos to be the King's court general. I think LA Tenorio has the skills of being a good coach as his basketball IQ is amazing and coaching the young Gilas is a great venue to share his coaching talent.
He for sure will share what he has learned and experienced in the PBA. That will give a huge boost to the young talents of Gilas. He's much better IMO than of Josh's.

What do you think about this news? Do you think it will affect the performance of L.A. Tenorio in his current team Ginebra San Miguel?
We all know how important L.A. Tenorio is in Ginebra, the veteran point guard in the team.
Take note it is Gilas Youth, our national juniors team.

are you familiar with all these imports?

Only familiar with the three imports, Justine Brownlee, RHJ and Ratliff, the import of the Magnolia Hotshots. All the others seems new to me.

For me, Barangay Ginebra and TNT Katropa will be at the disadvantage of the Commissioner's Cup since they have a smaller import compare to the other team and i don't think their talent could offset the size disadvantage.
It seems like that will be the case for the TNT, but the thing is, after his heroic performance during the Governor's Cup, the team can't just switch to a new import just like that because that might affect RHJ and his loyalty to the team as well.

Aside from the 3 that you said, I'm also a bit familiar with Quincy Miller because he also became an import for the Converge a few seasons ago. It's good for the management that they already removed the height limit for Governor's Cup, but I expected way taller players (like the 7-footers at least).
Yeh, I was hoping for an independent team to reach the finals and eyeing for ROS as they are really doing well binding their players and with the mentorship of coach Yeng he might bring back the old glory days where they are able to reach the top and win a title, King's capabilities really fit for the ROS as like you said he's like THJ and JBL which will always do his best to help the team, with that kind of mentality and with the young and determinated group of players like ROS that combination can create a competitive squad.
Right now, only ROS is the independent team that I can consider "has a good system" since they have a good coach in Yeng Guiao. I really thought that they can defeat the TNT during the Governor's Cup, but they're too much for them. I believe the ROS' roster is composed of young players and if I do hope that an independent team will at least reach the PBA Finals like you said because like what I said in the past, the league is becoming a duopoly already between the MVP and SMC teams and that's what makes the league so BORING. The competitiveness is diminishing season after season.

He might bring impact even on a farm team but not that much if he'll be playing against the super team, maybe even playing for ROS who are also improving in terms of local players, if he can add his talent then we might see a good competitor against MVP or SMC squad, though we can't conclude what might be his fate and what will be the the performances of their squad this upcoming new season, hopefully something decent from them as they manage to sign him to play.
It might’ve been better if King played for Rain or Shine, especially since they did well last season. King is such a talented import, super skilled on offense and doesn’t seem to get tired, kind of like RHJ from TNT. But you know, no matter how good a player is, if they’re put on a farm team, it’s like they never really stand a chance. It’s part of the culture, they’re called a “farm team” for a reason.

George King is making his return as the same import for the Bossing. It’s probably not getting much attention since the team he joined isn’t performing well, some even call it a farm team. But honestly, if George King were playing for a stronger team, like Magnolia, they’d have a real shot at making the playoffs.

It’s just a shame that his talent is stuck on a weaker team. If you check out his highlights, you’ll see how impressive he is, especially from the 4-point area. This guy’s got serious skills...
