It all depends on what altcoins you invest, because it is of great importance, as many altcoins in 2-3 years may disappear.

First of all long term investment is not just buy and hodl, you must follow market everytime. If you had omg or others at october like you said, you should sell them from high prices at bull season. And I can recommend for research about Sirinlabs and Icx, I like them.
Holding that time is too long, so I think we need time to cultivate knowledge, not too impatient, the market will recover and the penny will rise, I expect ETH price in 2019 will be $ 1000. In 2018 I have no expectations anymore.
Theres no need to choice because almost all altcoins are always good for long term hodling . aside from altcoins you can also add bitcoin because bitcoin is also a verry versatile coin and can work on both long & short term investments .
I suggest put 50 to 70 percent on bitcoin and the rest percent will go on alts ( promising alts , such as eth / xrp / bch ) you should always prioritize btc because that is the one that can give you huge profits compared to altcoins .
you can hodl xrp, eos, neo and some other top20 coins. but you need to learn basic technics like 4h ma50 and check it time to time. it is about on where you buy and where you sell. you need to buy and sell at its best place to gain more profit.

Hmmh 2-3 years is really long man considering some project can just decide to dump at the last minute so if you are really holding you have to make sure that the coin is worth holding and keep yourself updated on the latest on those projects
Now, no one will be able to guess after two or three years, what the altcoin value will look like, but if you talk about 2018 this year will be the worst year for cryptanalysis, as they are now priced. The decline in ETH was only $ 200 lower than in early 2018
Only you need to study the crypto project yourself, see how the team works, whether they adhere to the established deadlines in the roadmap, only after that you can make the right decision.

Honestly for my own thoughts it is not a good idea to hodl for almost 2-3 years which we all know at anytime the value of altcoins will be zero.Much better we hodl ethereum and bitcoin in the future.many people would prefer ETH or BTC which has a clearer security and future, but it all depends on the confidence of everyone, and all are free to choose.
I dont recommend doing too long time investment at crypto. Most of the projects will not be at the market after 2 3 years most probably, there is just ethereum and some coins from 1.5-2 years still working well.
