I would not recommend taking 2-3 years as a basis, be plastic, some news can greatly affect coins, just follow the development and sell when the rate is high and buy it when low. In my opinion, long-term potential has such coins as NEO, ICX, Waves, ETH and NEM.
I bet for ETH as the no.1 altcoin to hold no doubt gonna replace the throne of bitcoin soon another is the pillar token its a data wallet app project that will use a utility token pillar to fuel the pillar wallet its a grandma wallet everything you use needs privacy and its all covered by the pillar wallet.
if choosing a good coin to hold 2-3 years ahead I suggest you use eth, because eth is stable in price and eth nice to do as investment coin. so you can choose eth to get profit.
Probably 2 or 3 years is a very long time, it seems to me that not all projects will be able to survive in such a long time. Probably it's not just that the projects are most likely simply created to raise money, but still 2 or 3 years is a huge time.
That is why we need to ensure that we choose the right Altcoins for holding that it will sustain the long term investments. Indeed, 2 - 3 years are a long waiting but if the coins will success you could imagine the earnings like what happen to those early people who holds Bitcoin for a long time before in which they become rich by now but if your chosen coins will be fail then it will be surely a waste of time
If you just want to hold altcoins for 2-3 years then why not just hold bitcoin? Since the value of bitcoin is growing and those altcoins aren't reliable and may seem to be down any moment from now on. And if you want to stay with those altcoins that you are holding bare to your mind that having bitcoin is also like having gold and those altcoins. Eth can be a good choice for holding for more years though.

Just invest in Bitcoin, Ethereum of cryptocurrency, because now is the good time to invest, it will have good in future. For long years you invested in here it multiplied the cost of your coins. If it is in high just sell it.
Ethereum, Bitcoin and NEO for me. Ethereum is a huge huge group of companies influence already. NEO is the Chinese version of eth. And lastly Bitcoin which has the strongest market and possible upgrades will only strengthen it more.
I advise you to look at Universa promising blockchain project which will launch its network this spring, and I think in 2-3 years the company can grow hundreds of times!

I like that kind of investment too. Buy a high potential coin for almost free and forget about it. After couple of years you are rich. Sounds fun. Currently i am holding espers and tron as long term investment. I am planing to keep them for 2 years at least.
I do not think that long term investing in altcoins are great idea, maybe investing in stable crypto for 2-3 years is better idea?? And investing in risky altcoins for 3-5 months is great chance to earn a lot of money 
I will consider ins token as long term investment. They aim to create producer to customer direct commerce eliminating intermediaries. Their platform will be available at the Q4 2018. The devs are working attending conferences and signing contracta with producers.
