The points themselves are never taken into account, it's the ratio between current and max durability that's being used in all fail calculations. I don't have the math on me right now, so I will ask the devs if that's intended or not. But it does sound more or less right.
(To make my point more clear: 5/5 item is just as good as a 100/100 item. 2/4 is the same as 50/100, etc)
