Well, I can't imagine any other be applicable as that is usually the only acceptable proof of authentification.

Sometimes proof of residence is needed too, something like utility bill.

That would be great option, and convenient. Maybe not for all cryptocurrencies, but for ETH and BTC.

I would also add LTC as it is very good for transactions in general.

Can someone explain what that gateway is? I understand what it's for, but can explain the background.

It is just a wording used to describe a service that allows you to exchange your cryptocurrency for fiat money - USD, EUR and so forth...
