My s5 arrived this morning just as i was going out (wife and i at hotel for a couple of days) so i haven't had chance to unpack the box yet. I'll do as full a review as i can and set up some pictures for all your viewing pleasure when i get home on 31st.
Thanks Bitmain!

I am sitting typing this and watching sons of anarchy on netflix.  the miner is on the truck.  If I am lucky the show ends in 90 minutes and the miner comes right after it.

I'm very much looking forward to your review Phil.

Thank you!

I would have powered it up but UPS knocked on the door just the very second we were leaving, and my wife has spa treatment (she's in there now)
I have a massage at 12GMT, but it's not my sort of thing.. i may just get a beer and massage my throat  Cool

Glad you received it!!

Wish you let it hash before you left to the hotel, so it could made you BTC while you sleep  Grin

Hi cathoderay, Spondoolies-Tech, Bicknellski,

Hope below is clear enough, it is only S5 discussion thread here, we are appreciated that your topics are focusing on Miners.

Hello all,

Bitmain has employed me to help liaise with the community and later provide technical support. They have done this in order to help provide:

1) timely technical support
2) provide better feedback (if I don't know, I can find out from the people within Bitmain who will)
3) provide product and sales input from you guys directly into the company. If something is going wrong, YOU can fix it
4) provide native English press releases - less ManderEnglish, more sense.

This is a paid position, however it will in no way affect my independence or freedom in being critical towards Bitmain outside of this thread. My contract specifically stipulates:

Quote
Dogie will speak on behalf of BITMAIN and will not criticize BITMAIN in these threads. Dogie still reserves the right to criticize BITMAIN in his other threads. Both parties acknowledge that this relationship has no impact whatsoever on BITMAIN’s rating or standing in “Dogie’s ‘Manufacturer Trustworthiness” thread.

Please keep in mind people, this is Bitmain's product discussion thread. While excessive harassing of members isn't acceptable under any circumstance, it is especially not acceptable in someone else's thread. I'm sure Dogie doesn't mind talking to reasonable people about whatever issues people are having with him, but please do not do it here. Don't clutter the thread making information harder to access for those that want it.

Welcome to dogietalk.bs
i am glad to say my case is finally closed to my satisfaction.

thank you BITMAIN_janet.

Dont give up, persistence is key.

Well done edgar!! And you're absolutely right, persistence is key.

Guess I'll just have to keep asking then, come on Bitmain:

(unsnipped version)

this page warms the cockles of my old heart   Smiley good to see BMT and SP-T discussing things and acting together.

It is indeed a pleasure to see them discussing matters, and everything seems calm on the surface. However, dive under for a second & you'll see dogie doing his best to create waves on these smooth waters:

That way he can click the moderator button and cull that thread instead of this one.

Wait, dogie has moderator powers? Am I understanding this right?

So, he's deleting posts he doesn't like then leaving negative feedback on whoever he likes for posting?

He's neg-rep'd me already for pointing out his errors, it better not be him who's deleting my posts as well........ Angry
No, he is just excessively (and obsessively) using "Report to Moderator".
Three of my posts were deleted recently, I believe all of them were reported by him. All of them innocent.

Edit:
If you have (a lot...) of free time, you'll enjoy the following thread:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.9890185

It would be nice if Bitmain could verify weather dogie was doing this with or without their consent and/or knowledge. If so, why?

Bitmain?

Thats a meta issue (accusing the moderators of being biased), you can discuss that in the meta thread you already opened.

LULZ @ dogie the wannabe mod......

How can a question to Bitmain, about Bitmain, possibly belong anywhere but in the Bitmain thread? I see you like using the old "off topic" ploy when you don't like particular questions, but as the question was aimed at Bitmain & not your naughty self, you should just go about your duties as normal. There's a good dogie.... Roll Eyes

Regarding the expected hashrates from a 0.8V chip (22GH according to the first-post chart) and 60 chips per machine, why the machine's hashrate is rated at 14% under that.
=> As to string power supply, the core VDD for each chip is a bit different, and the max frequency should match the lowest VDD. After testing, we can get good manufacturing yield when the frequency is set to 350MHz, instead of ideal 400MHz. You can try to overclock the miner, and you may get more hash rate.

Quote
Also what provisions were made to keep node currents stable during chip use fluctuations.
=> During the boot procedure, the consuming current of S5 is increasing step by step. During the hashing procedure, the hashing function should not stop, though the current is stable.

Quote
One user keeps asking for the ability to disable individual chips, which for a string miner would be a pretty bad thing to have happen but if chips disable themselves, what provision is there for proper currents to keep flowing?
=> the chips in the string can not be disabled manually. At least there is no disable chip during testing and pilot production. If one chip is disabled, the rest chips of th entire chip-chain may still work, or fail. Both is possible.

Quote
Are there any provisions for chips overvolting? Like say, using a server PSU that's reading high and outputting 13V instead of 12 (which isn't terribly uncommon), giving you an 8% overvolt - say one node in your string fails short and now you're running 14 nodes. You're now 15% overvolted on all chips. How is that handled?

=> You can overvoltage or undervoltage the miner by adjusting the output of PSU. If there is a bad chip in the string, even the bad node is in the tail of the string, the miner may not work.

Althrough there are several types of miners which are designed with a kind of string solution, but there is a difference among them. We are sure our string miner won't catch on fire, Miner will stop working when hashing boards fail.

If you could get us the list of altcoin and pool, you want to mine, we may be able to test it for you!

Thanks but I want to know "for sure" as it is one of the least talked about functions (at least to my knowledge).

I used to mine alt coins on an Avalon. While the first firmware revisions made it incredibly hazardous to the machines health. (Fans would clock to the absolute minimum and the machine would have a runaway heat escapade.)

The eventual revisions of firmware made it (relatively stable).

I want to check in and see if the latest hardware like the S3, S4 and S5 plays well with alt coin pools without having any calamities. (based only on SHA256)

P.S. I am going to make a thread soon to list the (relatively recent) hardware that supports this specific feature. Mostly so that HW manufactures take it into account or at the very least warn their users that it might end up in a meltdown due to newly discovered bugs.

As long as the alt coins let you!  This is a SHA256 miner and it should work but not guaranteed.  For Bitcoin Mining, YES THIS WILL WORK!!   Grin

Can the S-5 hash any alt coin that are based on SHA256? (on Alt Coin Pools)
Does the internal or controller software allow it?

(Is it capable?)

Yes, altcoin mining [on the same encryption] is not a function of hardware or firmware. As long as the altcoin pool isn't terrible, it'll do it.

I have had every generation of bitmain products. All have no problem with sha alt coins so far.

I got a ups notice the s-5 arrives on monday. I will set up a thread on it in a day or two.

Cool, PM or post that thread#.  I will try to post my experiences, too.  Mine should arrive Tuesday 4PM EST as long as UPS doesn't screw up as usual... D'oh!!

P.S. "Bitmain", I'm expecting S5 coupons within a few hours of signing the delivery notice. :looking
