If you want To invest for a really long time then Bitcoin will be the best investment in which you can put your money as it is the fastest and safest investment in which you can put your money.
What i´d like to see discussed is not BTC or ALT. Because BTC is definitely a good investment and some of the 600 or more alts out there are as well. What i would like to predict is what alts will move independent from BTC in the future. With BTC jumping wich alts will jump with it.

As this is in the Trading Discussion I'd say it doesn't matter whether you buy bitcoin or high quality altcoins. If you will be trading anyway then you'll be selling alts as bitcoin rises and selling bitcoin as alts rise, so you'll constantly be switching between bitcoin and alts anyway.
Still op is asking for a long term term investment so he will trade for his coins after a very long time so you have to be very picky on choosing which coin to invest on.
wheather its long or short term, choosing which coin matters because its one the vital parts. And selling alts when bitcoin rises is not necessary, most of the time traders
sells it when the price pumps. selling on dumps is what panic sellers usually do. bottomline not everyone follow the same pattern as you have stated above.

Btcoin big profits? it has to go to 5500-6000 for you to double up. So altcoins would be my choise.
Yes any doubts on bitcoin? We have the advantage for investing for both places. Bitcoin and alt coins, we know investing in bitcoin is always as profitable as the price is about to pump very soon. While the market of alt coins is just following the foot steps of bitcoin. Both has the potential but I will always prefer to invest in bitcoin.
I checked many of altcoins price crossed 100$ and more but still we need to support the bitcoin else some of the toppest altcoin price and potential will reach near to bitcoin. Altcoin ICO support and creates the new. Then they are making new entrepreneur being in blockchain and eth based technology.

Bitcoins if long term. It doesn't matter when you will buy bitcoins, you will earn profit if you will hold them long enough. alt-coins are better if you want to earn in 1 week from them, but it's also more risky.

Bitcoin price increases are very fast this week. I personally choose to invest some of my money for bitcoin.

We should all be looking at bitcoin for the long haul because it will really give us the benefit of it rather than do daily trading. And for those people who are not good in trading, investing for long term is the best bet for them. We see threads like quitting trading, but we can offer them this very good alternative to just hold on your coins and just see it grow exponentially. Less worries but high rewards. I'm no longer trading altcoins or investing on them. Some of the groups of P&D are just manipulating the price resulting to sudden crash and its difficult to get out of it once you are trapped.

The better investment right now to invest is altcoin, just make sure the altcoin that you're gonna buy are legit and and listed at the top 20 coinmarketcap. Like xem, waves, bay and maid also eth.
When you can afford to buy now with some bitcoin with the current price of course that would be better and hold it for long term to have a good profit. But if you don't, best time to buy altcoin now as some of them are crashing, this is the perfect time to buy. However, buy the potential coins that you think that over time will pump. Soon altcoin will rise again so better now to don't have regrets.

choose bitcoin, if you really want long term investment, i will suggest bitcoin, as you can see when it comes to reputation, bitcoin is clearly the winner here,some of the alt coins is just emerging coins as of now and the reputation,brand and the trust of the customer that bitcoin have is not yet fully achieved, so for me, you should invest on bitcoin.
bitcoin still in rises but dont forget alts coin that dropping now. it will comeback. i rather to split to buy alts coins also consider as a safety when bitcoin is dropping.

I suggest to you if you have a large capital and will invest long-term, you should invest in bitcoin. You can see that bitcoin prices continue to show improvement. 
Well, Bitcoin is almost always a better investment. However, the saying buy low, sell high is still valid here, and at the moment what is down on the market are alts. But they remain a riskier investment, and nobody knows what the ceiling for Bitcoin is, so I would hold the majority of my portfolio in Bitcoin, and would research about the best altcoins to diversify.
I try to stick to a 70% bitcoin (bit of a btc maximalist), 20% top-30 altcoins and 10% 'shit'coin spread. That way I can focus on picking the right altcoin for my portfolio. In my opinion, having to many different coins is not worthwile.

you have to choose what do you prefer, i invest 50% of my portfolio on bitcoins and the other 50% on altcoins, you just have to choose one.
