Most of my efforts with an S3 have gone into Underclocking, but I would say that so long as you have no xxx, the temperatures are OK and you have a low HW error rate then keep going up.  Smiley

However with reference to that thread. I still do not think the S3 or S3+, at least any that use the TPS53355 Buck Converter chip, is voltage adjustable so don't waste time playing with the voltage adjustment.

Rich

Thanks for the reply. I ran them overnight and they were still hashing away happy as could be. I bumped them to 268.5 and they hashed great for a couple hours but the HW increased to 0.02 and the temps went up about 3 degrees on each unit which in turn made my cabin into a sauna! Guess ill wait until the temps get a bit colder and try my luck again.

How many of you are running your S3's 24/7 with a higher than 250 overclock? I found the following thread and decided to start tinkering....

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/s3-bm1382-overclocking-with-voltage-setting-883197

I have two S3+ units at my house that will run 250 24/7 with <0.01 HW. I added all frequencies up to 300 and started conservatively by overclocking both units to 262.5. So far they have been running at 523-527 gh/s for a few hours with no change in HW and 830W for the both of them at the wall. Temps went up a couple degrees (41 to 43 and 39 to 42), and the cables feel cool (EVGA 1300G2) I didn't change voltages and I am running the latest S3 firmware.

I'm pretty happy with the results thus far, but a little wary of running them like this 24/7. Anyone have any experiences running long term overclocks higher than the factory presets?

Always use the option "Save and apply" followed by a soft reboot
What Firmware and cgminer version do you use?

Hello there,

does someone has an Idea why my S3 don't "accept" the changes at the asic freq file?
It does save the file correctly but after reboot it still comes up with the "standard" freq of 225^^allthough 225 is comment out and 218,75 is "active".
It doesn't matter which freq I activate, it always comes up with 225M.

TQ

Hooked up 3 ant s3 to a 1gb/mth data plan once and it chewed 533MB over that period. so about 180mb/mth or so each I presume.

Hi to all

Just switched my ISP from totally unlimited (but very slow) to 150Gb per month (but quickish) 4G internet. I am hosting an S3 in my bedsit which actually is a nice little 400W heater now the nights are getting cooler here in Portugal. The question I can't seem to find an answer too is how much bandwidth does an S3 use in a 24 hour period? (up and down) I have Networx installed on my desktop and laptop which gauges the usage from computers but the S3 is connected directly to my 4G router so bypasses the monitoring.

Any help much appreciated. TIA

Have never measured it but what I have read is that using Stratum with variable difficulty requires ~1kbps (0.125 KB/sec). This is regardless of the speed of your Miner.

If i have 2 running for about a year and i consider electricity a write off and save all my bitcoins do you think ill have enough in about a year for a s7 or whatever the new model is? Right now on bitmaintech the s7 is listed as 4 btc.

If you saved the money in electricity you spent running two S3s for a year you would have more money than the bitcoin they are able to generate in pooled mining.

I didn't want to buy one with bitcoins I was trying to buy with USD. I have had difficulty buying bitcoins in the past. How should I go about buying btc?
It may favour you, at times, to buy in USD rather than BTC and the reverse is also true (that most times), but that is why I said to keep an eye on the BTC / USD rate.
Buying BTC ... depends where you are but there are many exchanges AND individuals selling BTC. Make your choice and do your due dilligence!

So what miner would you guys recommend i buy? I can only afford to save about $200 a month.
Keep saving ... keep an eye on the bitmain site .... keep an eye on the BTC / USD rate .... it won't be many months before you can buy the latest. BUT before buying, read this forum for user experience on the miner you want to buy.

The simple answer is no you won't have enough BTC to buy the latest and best by running 2 S3's for a year UNLESS you solo mine and find a block (which itself is a lottery no end).

probably not.. you would be lucky to have 1 btc saved up by years end..

2 s5s maybe.. but like i said, in july the block halfs.. so they will make half as much as they do now.. probably even less due to difficulty going up.

it would really only be a good deal if you got the s3s for free and you already have a power supply to run them.. even then you will lose money in the end. you would do better if you just put your change in a jar and didnt spend it for a year..

Im looking into buying a used s3 can anyone give me a recommendation on a trusted reseller? I dont want to end up with one thats broken. And for a power supply i was going to go with a cx850m so i can run a second s3 on the same supply that will work to power 2 s3 units correct?

while an 850W PSU can power 2 S3s at stock speed you have to get one with 4 SEPARATE PCI-E cables.. (not sure about that model but id check, the picture shows it only have 2 cables with 2 ends each) i would not use cables that have 2 ends to power a S3 by itself..

also the s3 is really close to its end of life.. if you dont have absolutely free power, id consider getting a s5 instead..

edit.. its also a bronze psu and you want a gold or platinum one.. so id pass on that PSU..

The S3 is relatively cheap and i cant afford an s5. I was going to go with that to start collecting bitcoins and hopefully have enough in about a year to get an s7 or whatever the newer miner model is. electric is about 9 cents where i live. can you give me a specific recommendation on psu?

with difficulty going up the way it is, network hash rate is going up very fast.. at 9c a KWH you dont have a year to mine in profit.. you dont even have a couple months Sad

at 9c a KWH a s3 uses about 25$ a month in electricity..
check this site.. key in 440 ghs and see what you will make mining.. right now its around 30$ a month, or 5$ a month profit.
https://bitcoinwisdom.com/bitcoin/difficulty

you got till about 80,000,000,000 difficulty and a s3 will cost more to run then you get in bitcoin.. thats if the price of btc stays above 320$..

you definitely wont make enough bitcoin mining with a s3 to buy a s7 in a year.. plus you have to factor in the block halving thats coming up around july of next year.. the s5 probably wont even be profitable for long.

its really a bad time to start investing in mining equipment..
