The fight was held at Madison Square Garden, sort of Caraballo's homecourt as there a quiet number of Puerto Ricans living in the area, and that fight is Caraballo's because it was intended to showcase his talent amongst its people but the plan didn't materialize as Sultan derailed a little bit the progress of his career. Having a high knockout ratio in your fight record is a double-edged sword and that was what happened to Caraballo.

The positive thing that happens to Caraballo is that this whole thing happened in a non-championship fight and now they realized that the road to glory is not knocking all the opponents out.

All his previous winnings and knock outcomes from weak fighters he has a good ring generalship and big punches but unfortunately, the chin betrayed him this will the big issue whenever he is fighting a fighter as good as Sultan there are a lot of great fighters in his division it's time for his promoters to stop cherry-picking and go for top-caliber fighters, of course, he should train harder.

I saw the scorecards and the judges are heavily favoring Caraballo, rounds that do not have knockdown go to Caraballo, and why there is a need for a rematch it's a unanimous decision, the win obviously go to Sultan's favor, there will be a rematch to settle the score if the fight could go either way, what do Caraballo have to prove in a rematch that he trained his chin to receive a punch, a weak chin will always remain a weak chin, give Caraballo a match against another top-caliber fighter and he will still get knockdowns or a knockout.

I would also say Amik Khan reminded me of Caraballo, they are both good technical boxers but they are not durable and the Filipino fighter has a well-deserved win although the win is a bit controversial I think let's just move on since a win is still a win, just let the organization do the job if the judgement was fair and if not then someone has to be penalized according to the rule of the boxing organization.

Better to move on and wait if there's a rematch to happen. Caraballo deserves that rematch and if his fans and more boxing fans will call for this one, we might see the rematch to happen much earlier.

Just a good chin and Sultan takes this one from Caraballo. The strong fighting determination of Sultan dominates and even there are controversial. He manages to take and win this fight.

There are upcoming fights that we will go to watchout, this sports this getting fans' attentions back.

If there will be a re-match, Sultan should aim for early KO.
Because as he saw, the scorecards were almost not favoring on him despite of the 4 knock downs.
And he managed to get only one point lead over Caraballo, despite of his performance.
But if in case there will be a re-match, definitely, Caraballo will prepare for this to redeem himself.
So Sultan should be very aware of the possible turn of events here. So he needs to target an early finish of the fight for the re-match.

And Jonas Sultan reminds me of Pacquiao, I mean in the way he was also plummeted by Caraballo. And it's amazing that he can take all that punches and didn't go down hard. Well, he was battle tested against Casimero and won against him so that enough said how durable Sultan is and it proved in this game. Durable chin against a knock out artist who has weak chin. Caraballo might bounce back, but if he ever faces another touch fighter then probably he will lost by knock out here.

He is really strong, Carballo is a power puncher and all his previous wins are in KO, that record is scary already but Sultan was able to deliver, giving him a tougher competition that he has not tasted before. It's his first loss and it's good if he will learn from his mistakes and develop his weakness.

There's no room in boxing if you have a weak chin, you'll never be a champ.

Apart from the 10-9 on one of the judge's score card on a knockdown, I'm not going to argue with the rest of the rounds. I think we can all agree that Caraballo is the more technical and efficient fighter throughout the match. He's unlucky that Sultan had a very tough chin despite landing clean and powerful shots of his own. I think a rematch is in order.
I agree with that but the score should not be that close. About the rematch, yes for sure Caraballo deserves a rematch and while he is more technical, he should also work on his chin and Sultan will work on his boxing skills so he can beat Caraballo if he can't knock him down in the rematch.

The key to Sultan's victory was the knockdown, without it, Caraballo is a clear winner.
I have seen a lot of boxers who are great punchers and technical and they were betrayed by their weak chin and weak knees, this is the first time that Caraballo was hit so many times, and every time those punches landed his knees buckle, he is used to fighting fighters who do not move and just received his punches and were afraid to throw, that chin breaks his being a promising boxer, I don't mean to disrespect Caraballo but world champions have a strong chin and strong legs, this fight reminds me of Amir Khan, who moves great in the ring and keeps piling up points but getting always beaten by a punch in the chin.

It's really interesting to see an upset and bet on underdog Cheesy This is why previously I pointed out we shouldn't only look by his record, but we should look on his performance and his opponent. However Caraballo will take this as lesson since this is the first time he fight with top boxer.

Even Top Rank didn't expect this upset to happen, they just recently signed Caraballo to their promotional company thinking that the guy is a big crowd drawer in the future but the mistake they made was they matched Caraballo with a Filipino boxer. Caraballo's chin was exposed in this fight and i think his future opponent will make this one a target.

@Baofeng, it's a double win for us today bro if you have bet on Zepeda. Not a good night for Puerto Rican boxing fans here tonight but we can expect Vargas and Caraballo to bounce back strong.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to bet on the Zepeda win, for strange reasons, when I bet on the Jonas Sultan ML, the line on Zepeda wasn't there, or maybe I just have overlooked as I was excited to bet on Sultan a day before the fight (after the weigh-in).

Anyhow, I'll take the win for Sultan, and congrats if you have bet on Zepeda with that knockdown win.

Sultan Could have lost the fight if he only has three knockdowns this is the scorecard he lose on almost all the judges scorecards on rounds that he did not floor Caraballo, there was around where he knock down Caraballo and yet it was scored 10-9, all three judges seems to have a bet on this match, this will be questionable and will become controversial if Sultan lost the match or even a draw.

Maybe they have a bet, but I think they don't want the Filipino to win the title here, simply as that.

How can they score a 10-9 round when it should be 10-8 when a fighter knocks down his opponent?

I do agree, if Sultan does lost this one, this will be one robbery, because of the 4 knockdowns he scored and yet he didn't win the fight. I guess the judges can't do anything about it but to look as if the fight were really close in their eyes.

I just watched the replay of this fight and I was amazed on how dedicated Sultan to win and chasing Caraballo often. But the judges seems not fair for this one.

Anyway he win and thats what matter so congrats to Jonas Sultan. You gave us an exciting fight and I think they deserves a rematch, they're both skilled.

There will be a rematch if the match is close like a split decision where the fight could go either way or if in the contract there is a stipulation of  a rematch but this happens where the champion losses the title, the boxing community believe that Caraballo will win the match because he is a promising boxer you seldom see a boxer with that kind of record, but Sultan just break that record.

Really a close fight. From the very beginning the match was very close. Every round created expectation, because it isn't possible to predict who the winner will be. Round 6 gave momentum for Sultan and he properly made use of it. Carlos Caraballo was good with his defence than Jonas Sultan. Finally it was an enjoyable day for Philippine people.
It was a close fight because Caraballo was able to stand up and continue to fight, he also have good rounds since he has good boxing skills compared to Sultan, but because he has a weak chin, that made him suffer from the hands of Sultan who are always willing to finish him, it's just unfortunate he cannot totally knock him out.

However, the judges might be a little obvious as the score was very close despite Sultan scores knockdowns, which tells me that though Sultan wins, boxing is still one of the corrupt sports in the world.

I'm not too familiar with sultan, most people were thinking sultan won't be able to win the fight because he's not a popular fighter, but it turns out to be entertaining. Sultan is a smart fighter . At least his winning will give him more fans.

The guy is also unknown where I myself didn't know that we're both residing in the same province. Anyway, he just give all his best and he won the fight with no doubt and will gonna be one of the best fighters in the Philippines' history since he just earned his world title today. Congratulations to him and he just made everyone who watches his fight happy today.

I am just curious bro, what province in the Philippines did Jonas Sultan come from? I know he is now a pride of the Filipino but I like to know where he is coming from as I believe most of the great boxers in the Philippines are coming from Mindanao, just like Manny Pacman.

You can read this new article released by rappler.com.

Quote
Proud Zamboangueños rejoiced as their boxing hero from Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte, ended the 14-win streak of Caraballo, all by knockouts.

It was also mentioned in the article that a boxer Eumir Marcial who is a bronze medalist of the last Olympics is from Mindanao, Zamboanga to be more specific. So, you are right, lost of talents in mindanao and good thing we have a promoter that could help them bring their talent to the world.
A promoter who have all the capabilities to promote more talents not just from Mindanao but all over the country, He can use his fame to bring more good fights for his fellowmen, hopefully this upcoming election, whatever his fate he won't forget about the people who really needed his fame to gain good recognitions and more promising fights.

Congrats Jonas Sultan, you proved another record that pinoy fighters always have the capabilities to upset their opponents. Younger and much promising Caraballo ended up short.  Wink

Congratulations to Jonas Sultan, that was a good win but I don't agree with the scoring, it looks like the judges put their money on Caraballo but it's too obvious that Sultan won because of his knockdown scores. I hope they will be investigated as it looks like they try to build the undefeated fighter but failed.

"This is boxing. This is war,” Sultan said. “And I came to win tonight. Caraballo is a tough man, but I wanted this one.

I followed this up here

I think it was a keenly contested fight with a narrow win for Sultan. A narrow win of 94-93 points isn't a fight that was easy to decide but at the end of the day the victory was given to Jonas Sultan and in the game of sports victory must be declared. Is up ty Caraballo who has the crowd by his side to restrategize
