Arum is not sure of what he is saying, he only said based on what he saw with a boxer's experience in the past. Yes, Arum is not a doctor, we should not believe in him but let us also understand that when you have a problem in your eye, some doctors would recommend you should not engage with combat sports anymore.

Sugar Ray Leonard got a detached retina and got surgery and this was 1982 he eventually came back to beat Hagler, coming from Sugar Ray

Quote
“Because of the advancement in medical technology, they can do wonders,” said Leonard. “But yeah, you have to be patient.”
Now, we’ll wait to see how patient that Spence will be before trying to return.

I don't think Spence cannot come back because of the detached retina the technology is better now he survived the car accident he will survive this detached retina, there's still a lot of store for Spence, his career is not yet over far from over.

Let's be positive that he will be able to come back but we should also not neglect the possibility that he will not be able to play again. That was a sensitive condition and even if it heals already it will never be normal and it will be weaker, and if that is injured, you know the problem could worsen.

Don't get me wrong, I'm just concerned with this condition too as we know our eyes are very important.

And to add to that, Spence is still very young and as others said, with the advancement of sports science, that detached retina can be healed 100%.

Arum is well known for throwing words out of context, because obviously, he is a promoter you wanted to hype. So I think Spence can be back again in less than a year and could chase Crawford for the biggest welterweight fight since Pacman vs Mayweather.

I still count him tough, Errol Spence is still unbeaten and has the WBC and IBF belt. And unless that surgery is not successful or it didn't heal as expected then the boxing community can strike him out and be counted as champion in recess and if he will able to comeback then he could get back his belt again. Don't take Arum words, he is a promoter and obviously he wanted his cash cow Terrence Crawford to remain on the top of the welterweight division. And you can't compare Sugar Ray's injury I think it was caught when he was about on the downhill and the science that time is not that far advance as compare to today.

Arum is not Spence doctor he has no knowledge about Spence's condition and he admits it, I don't think Spence career is over we have an advance technology now to address Spence eye condition, if ever it's a big loss in the boxing community, if Spence cannot fight anymore he is on the peak of his career and it's not yet settled who is the real king in the welterweight division until now there is no official announcement of Spence condition, we should not believe on what Arum will say when it comes to Spence.

^^ As far as competition goes, yes this will be his biggest fight and probably biggest pay check as well.

And it's really good to see him stepping out of his usual Top Rank opponents and trying out the first time to fight outside but with a bigger name in Shawn Porter. And for that I'll give props to Crawford. And if he wins in a convincing manner, would consider him as the top of the welterweight division, even higher than Errol Spence in my card.

You can't count on Errol Spence anymore as he is still inactive and probably would not be able to come back soon, so Terrence is the number 1 on his division but he has to fight fighters that are popular like Porter (which he will be fighting as per schedule), and probably other names that were champions before.

on the latest news, Arum said that Spence future in boxing is uncertain.

“What I don’t know is there are detached retains and detached retinas,”  Arum said when asked if IBF/WBC welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. will be able to come back from his eye injury.

“Is it completely detached? is it partially detached? I’m not a doctor, but I was involved when [Sugar] Ray [Leonard] had a detached retina, and they reattached it, and it was stronger than it was before. He went through that.

I think a fight with Porter is the biggest fight of Crawford, anyone thinks the same?

As far as checking his boxing record, yes, I consider the fight against Shawn Porter is the biggest one in his career.

Sad to see it was organized where Crawford is now reaching his veteran age. I hope after Porter, and Crawford is able to get the job completely done, his future promoter will deal and arrange a fight on some big names.  Before that happens, Crawford just needs to make sure he will win against Porter. The latter is a tough guy to beat even Crawford was tagged as a Favorite to win the match.

A tough guy to beat because he is a durable fighter, he has fought champions like Thurman and Spence but he did not go down, he remains aggressive though in the end, he loses on the judges' scorecards.

This is the type of challenger that would give a real challenge to the champion as when a champion feels that he cannot hurt the challenger, he would make an adjustment to ensure that he wins in points which Porter has a disadvantage since he doesn't have good boxing skills like Crawford.

Me watching the fight between Herring and Stevenson wherein Crawford was present because of the obvious reason that he and his team are working behind Herring. Unfortunately he lost, so I think this will fuel Crawford more to prepare hard for this fight because he doesn't want to go lost. You can see that Stevenson glance at him at round 4 if I'm not mistaken as if saying "your boy is not good enough" for me.

I'm with you mate, Terence Crawford is nowhere near the footsteps of the boxing legend Manny Pacquaio. The Filipino boxer has taught most of the famous Mexican fighters like Barrera, dela Hoya, Marquez, and Morales not to mess with him. And surely Pacquiao made a huge steps on his career just to be the only boxer who holds 8th division world championship.

Crawford is also an aspiring professional boxer who wants to carve his name in the boxing industry. But given his age, we can't compare him for a bit with Manny Pacquiao.

We should not compare the success between Manny Pacquiao and Terence Crawford.

It's just unfortunate that Crawford didn't have a chance to stand up against popular boxers in his prime. That's one he always wanted even before but I don't know why his promoter didn't work on that. Even he has a good credential of simultaneously winning titles within WBA, WBC, IBF, and WBO, he still unable to take part in fighting on a big main event with the same level as Pacquiao's main event.

His contract with Top Rank will expire soon according to reports, maybe he can make a risky decision to look for another promoter who can give him a big fight. He deserved a big fight so he will earn the recognition that he is a real champion, not only keeping that undefeated record, he should also risk by fighting champions that are still in their prime.

Actually I was expecting that he would fight MP, but it did not happen, I think it does not work well, promotion problem I believe.

True, the contract is expiring and we don't know if he will still continue with Top Rank knowing he surely have a lot of offers from different promotion.

Crawford needs to win this fight, if he remains undefeated, that would be his ticket to still get a good contract from other promoters after the contract with Top Rank will expire.

^^ I'm not discrediting Crawford's resume, it was really superb as he takes 0 of his opponents in the past. I think the trend has been set by Top Rank and Bob Arum on Manny Pacquiao, they put a opponent in front of him that can really enhance his ability and it's the fight is all in house as they said that's why critics argues that Arum "cherry pick" Manny's Pacquiao's opponents. So they have a blue print now, and that's what they did on Crawford, that's why we have the same critics saying the same on Crawford. And this is the first time that Bud Crawford will step up that will define his legacy if he beat Porter.

Yep, smart money and smart bettors will still go for Crawford, maybe by decision or fight goes to distance.

I disagree with that, I believe that Manny Pacquiao is just exceptional, he beat a lot of champions during his career that's why he became an 8th division world champion and no one will achieve that for sure, he is a legend, we can't compare him with Crawford.

however, we can say that Manny owes his success to Bob Arum as well as he was given big fights under the promotion of Bob Arum, so I guess they are still good friends until now although they don't look like one in the media.

Crawford is still 34, he still has more fights to come while Manny has already retired from boxing.
If Crawford retires the same age with Manny, then he still has 8 years in boxing.

In terms of success, of course, no one in the active boxers now could potentially surpass what Manny has achieved, but Crawford is really good and he remain undefeated until now, so if he wins this fight, it should convince people that he can fight and beat anyone whom will be put in front of him.

I remember that Keith Thurman commented about his analysis for the two boxer. Thurman has a lot of experience facing Porter in the ring and he is biased on his analysis. He has a point on all of his comment about the different on skills for Crawford to Porter but this is still boxing and a boxer can formulate a counter for a formidable opponent just like what Marquez did to Pacquiao during there final fight. I think Thurman comment has a mixed emotion because he still didn't faced Crawford and yet he is downgrading much Porter just because he defeat it before. Maybe he is jealous for not facing Crawford.

He's pointing his opinion and it shouldn't be treated like that,
not because you beat the person automatically, you can downgrade his capacity.

Porter is an aggressive type of fighter, but if he will manage to convert, Crawford will be at risk.
But for sure Crawford's camp also reviewing those previous fights from Porter and analyze to where to find the advantages.

All those opinions and speculations will be concluded after the fight.

That's just his opinion though, but maybe it has substance because he has face Porter before and he was able to beat him in a close fight. And right, Keith hasn't face Crawford so his opinion might be biased at all angle.

I don't see though that Porter will change his style, he already own it, and it's really effective as he has beat a lot of good fighters, and close to beating Spence in that style if not for the knock down scored.
