Well, I think 4-5 hours is actually a lot of work. I get the same toll more or less for my review of the Italian board, and in the end, it's not something I can do in the spare time. I need to be concentrated and focused on this.
If you are doing it all in one go then yes, it is not an insignificant amount of time but I usually spread the work over 3-4 days: first day I make the charts, 2nd day list of the most active members and 3rd day the text so its not bad. I used to do it in one day (usually on the first day that merit dashboard was updated) but back then this overview was shorter and I could do it in an hour or two and on top that I got a little bit more lazy.

Or maybe at 76 I am just too old for this.
I am younger than you yet I asked myself the very same thing few times when I was very late to publish it. Cheesy

Nah its not that much work (takes me maybe 4-5 hours overall) as majority is done by the others, its more slacking than anything else that stops me from publishing these overviews in a more reasonable time frame.

These statistics are also not easy to do and take some work. So it is normal to take some time.
And of course, if more important works come up, this one is left behind.

Today I saved the first images of my monthly roundup!
@rikafip! The slaking competition has officially started...again!
That means I am leading as I haven't started with anything yet. I planned though to spend today's afternoon chilling at my PC, watch some football and at the same time work on the charts but unfortunately wife had different plans (as usual Tongue) how we should spend the day, so it is postponed for tomorrow.

Since today is the first day I could have published this overview, I still don't think that we are late. Days of me publishing overviews few hours after @DdmrDdmr updated merit dashboard are long gone. Cry
Yeah you still have days left before you can publish the report as you were fast on the last one so take your time.

Yep, if you did it last Friday you would miss the merit data for that whole day so its better to wait one more week.
It's better to be late for these reports and present full data scope and monthly stats for the local board activity as they give complete overview of them and data needs to be accurate because one day data dump can also make changes in thr graphs so take your time.

The longer we keep writing those statistics are difficult to make, the longer those statistics won't be ready.
Stop procrastinating! Go to work (I am saying it myself!).

Yeah if you have taken up the responsibility to share these reports then you have to work on them and delaying them would eventually take more time but you also need to prepare them on accurate marks with whole lot of data that you are going to include. We can wait little bit and sure you would be coming up soon with these monthly reports.

You're right, you're right!

I haven't done mine yet to present, and I haven't even started.  Lips sealed

Let's all work, to bring the long-awaited statistics as soon as possible!

Thing is, I am so slow when making these overviews that it usually takes me a week or two to finish it. I start strong, but then I get sidetracked with something and eventually forget about it. So its crucial I start early if I want to have it finished in a reasonable time frame.

Calm down, it's only the 6th. Until the end of the month there's still a little to go.  Tongue

When this morning I saw @ddmrddmr update, I thought: “ Now, I am officially late with my update. Maybe also Rikafip feels the same way!”.

I even really wanted to update my thread after DdmrDdmr updated the merit dashboard data last Friday, but apparently it was the end of the month (September) where I'm sure the data must be incomplete especially about the sender and recipient of merit.

But expectedly mentioning this is pure evil!

But I think it's safe to do it this week regardless of Rikafip doing it in the second, third or last week of this month.  Cheesy

By the way, congrats on this one fillippone.

Shamm already mentioned one - the lack of good local posts that are under merited.
To be precise, he mentioned lack of threads, not posts so maybe he misunderstood the rules. But let's say for a moment that he meant posts - in that case Philippines board doesn't even need a merit source, which I seriously doubt given their measly merit/post ratio. I mean, even "Off Topic" board has higher 12 month merit/post ratio than them (0.1 vs 0.07).

The applicant might not get a lot of support from the Bitcointalk community or they will get "fake support" by those who haven't even checked the posts in question because many people won't bother translating foreign language posts to check whether or not they deserve merits.
I honestly didn't notice lack of support for local board merit source status as long as applicant is somewhat reputable and active.

I don't think that there are any rules from which boards those 10 posts should be, but it kinda makes sense that if you are applying for a local board merit source (and some people do that), it kinda makes sense to include mainly posts from that local board, therefore showing that local board is indeed under merited and that it needs more merit sources.
Valid point, but that creates some other limitations.

Shamm already mentioned one - the lack of good local posts that are under merited.
The second one being, most people outside of that local have no idea what the post is saying. If I saw random Pilipino posts, I would have to run them through Google Translate to get a basic understanding. The applicant might not get a lot of support from the Bitcointalk community or they will get "fake support" by those who haven't even checked the posts in question because many people won't bother translating foreign language posts to check whether or not they deserve merits.
Lastly, it gives theymos and anyone else who decides who gets appointed as merit source the same burden and workload.

Someone correct my if I am wrong, but if you are applying to become a merit source, do you have to show 10 under merited posts/threads from your local sub ONLY? A merit source application is supposed to show that you know what a merit-worthy post is supposed to look like. And theymos doesn't select merit sources to distribute merits in specific local boards only. You do it everywhere. With that in mind, find any 10 posts that you believe are merit-worthy but they haven't received enough merits. I feel like that should be enough.

I also remember members making merit source application for other English boards and including only posts from that specific board, like for example NotATether merit source application  for Development & Technical Discussion board.

As you said, theymos wasn't specific from which boards those posts should be so you could just share 10 quality under merited posts and that should be enough, but I guess that people think this way they have better chances of getting it approved.

it's good to have someone from my fellow Filipino to apply as a merit source but I think it's hard to find 10 quality thread from my local because as of now only few quality threads created a few months ago.

Merit source application requirement is not to find 10 quality thread, but to find 10 posts that according to applicant didn't receive enough merit, and there is a big difference between post and a thread. If you actually meant post, and if no one on your board can't find 10 undermerited posts in the last few months, then I guess that you don't really need more merit.

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.
