I'll suggest you check the top 100 and research on low supply coins with a strong use-case. Projects that meet a need. The check out some ICOs too and get great projects for cheap.
There are a lot of coins now is good to hold, but for me I will recommend neo since its price now is too cheap and will know the potential of this coins for long term investment. You will regret it if you didn't buy some neo now.

Yeah, top altcoins are the trusted and the most reliable one to hold as these are least affected by the price moments and have potential to survive for the long run. And now, I consider ETH, ripple to be the appropriate choice for the same, also you can opt for BTC as it's the most reputed one...
I have some personal choice i am not generalising for every one . Please research before inbvesting . NEO holding this coin will give gas as return . KCS will give some devidends based on transaction in kucoin exchange . Dropil currently its giving good profit by arbitrary . Ethereum now its cheap like never before.
Im going with Bitcoin and ETH, Ripple it's been a long time since its down and maybe after a while it will go high.

if the exception is bitcoin and ethereum I prefer dogecoin because even though the price movements are not so sharp but the decline is not so drastic.
I'm 40% BTC, 40% ETH, 10% OMG and 10% NANO/NULS/ADA. I prefer to play it save. I LOVE other projects, but I simply don't have enough fiat to buy everyone.
why don't you try to hold tokenomi or ADA or xlm. .

Well, since you excluded bitcoin, I think that the remaining coins to hold very dangerous, they are very volatile and their price is unstable.
