Its depends on which situation you faces. If market is stable & price will be good then its better to sell & buy some potential coins like xrp,eth,ada.

Knowing that you could get free coins from Airdrops, would you exchange it once you got the coins or hold it until the vslue rises up?
If you are getting coins from airdrops and your planning to exchange it very soon, better to check if the value can rise up the next few days or months so that you can hold it and wait for the great opportunity to exchange it in a very high value. 
For me, i will exchange immediately. I will not hold it because i get it free 😀
Hodling is the only policy. You will only lose your money, if you sell your coins right now. Buy some more deep and stay calm. The green market will come one day and we will be rewarded for our patience!
Now the market is constantly going down, the more we hold, the bigger we lose, so in my opinion, when coins are worth selling them, do not worry too much and waiting for high prices, because The market will hardly recover.

Holding and exchange depends on the situation and the need of money. If the value is lower than what you expect and the project is also a success maybe i will hold.
Airdrops coin for me will always be changed if it is listed and keep it to my local fiat, this because of the experience i have when the market price rise in 2017 to early 2018. I vow to change any coin i receive once it is in any exchange. I kept $10K in various coins hoping it will rise more based on analysis and speculations by the market makers low and behold i lost all to less than $1K. as at now.
hold the coin up to experience a price increase that will further give results. Moreover, if the coin comes from the airdrop, surely the value of owning will be quite low and would not even taste the results. possible to airdrop of somewhat doubtful because even this often distribute coins have no value and it is often the case.
I will do research on project and then decide later on.... if i find it good then i will hold it if it is not that much good then i will sell or exchange it.

Its funny how most of ICOs are really trying to get investors because of their sticky mouth saying that their airdrop will come at huge value but it is literally not. I joined airdrop for probably 6 months and got less than a $10 jumping to conclusion that airdrop is really not a big deal in most of the ICOs.

Of course, you need to look at the project, its prospects, its idea. But the author, as I understand, speaks of Airdrop. You cannot earn on them now.

Better if I wait until volume rises. Since many free tokens from the Airdrop has no value. And there are some missing coin because coins failed. But we must be careful in following Airdrop, in order to obtain the token. But at its core when it was getting the token and then entered in the Exchange, the better to keep the coins.
Airdrops are free tokens so it is very reasonable if the value is low, there are even many Airdrops that have not entered the Exchange after so long. so if there is a token that already has a market but its value is low, it's better to keep it up until its value rises. and I really agree with your opinion, we must be careful when following Airdrop because my account has been banned after following Airdrop.

depending on the volume or price. if for example at this time i get a gift from airdrop, and have a price, i will immediately sell it. every airdrop coin that has a price I will continue to sell it.
Check the project status, if there is a development and it's worth holding the tokens. Hold on to it. Market is sluggish, I feel every crypto assets would worth x10 times during bullish market. So better hold on to your tokens.

The chances that free coin like airdrop will rise up in bear market is very low, so if you are holding free coin that you believe in, you should hold it until it become valuable so you would get full benefit of it!

I prefer to retain potential coins and my flagship coins like those who are able to maintain their existence at the top. And some of the other coins that are of poor quality will be exchanged for those who are far better prospects. So that all my assets can grow optimally and generate many benefits.
