We were discussing how Canada had a good chance of winning due to Murray. However, now that he has been declared out, this will boost the chance of the USA to win the tournament. It's not good news for Canada, to be honest. Despite this, I still wouldn't bet on the USA. Instead, I would consider other teams that might have a chance to pull off an upset.
He's totally a big caliber for the team but it seems that he needs to take a rest and he surely need that for the upcoming NBA season.

What is your opinion on the Dominican Republic's chances? I'm considering placing a bet on this team.
They're strong, some may underestimate them but they've got a chance to win with those line ups that they've got for their schedules. If you want to put a bet on them, you should and it's up to you which team you'll want to bet. This isn't just all about the support but of course money's on the line so choose what you think have the chance of winning consider also the odds.

It's sad to read news about so many players missing tournament - either because of injuries or they simply decided to get rest this summer. Last victim of injury is Kristaps Porzingis from Latvia. Seems that general level of competition will be lower than in China back in 2019.

I already expect these news about Kristaps 2 weeks ago.
Latvia scheduled plenty of test matches and while promoting it fro ticket sales about 3 weeks ago they wrote people would see all the NBA and Euroleague stars, yet Porzingis didn't show in any of those games.

As this is the deciding time to get your team ready this can only be something bad, and now it's confirmed.

Another prominent loss, and with Jamal Murray gone another one. Name wise this world cup seems not so big this time unfortunately. Still, let's hop for some nice games and bigger upsets maybe.

SBP to reveal Gilas Pilipinas Final 12 on August 23
I've seen the news that 2 players are being debated on who will play for the Philippines team. I am not sure though if it's just fake news or not. Abando and Ravena. Or both are playing? Sorry, I am not updated with their roster.

That's not fake news; it's just that one of the famous sports announcers chose Ravena over Abando to be part of the final 12 because he believes that Ravena has more experience compared to Abando. However, the crowd reacted, as they believe Abando deserves it more than Ravena. So, it's quite intriguing to see who will make it to the final 12.

I read that opinion too from “the dean”. He is thinking Kiefer Ravena is much better that Abando since Ravena has a leadership skills and has more experience. Abando is really good and gives 101% of his best effort on every game even if his play time on Korea is very limited on some of their game. Kiefer on the other hand is really a good point guard yet he receives a lot of criticism since Abando performs well on KBL while Kiefer is just meh.

Without any bias opinions, I will choose Kiefer if Thompson can’t play since Kiefer is a good point guard but since Thompson is already fit to play, I think Kiefer role will be useless since Thompson will get most of the play time due to conflict of role while Abando has flexible which will be useful that Ravena on this case.

This no brainer decision that Gilas needs a player that put 100% on his game which we already witness on Abando games.

Exactly, that's why the crowd is upset when the Dean chooses Ravena. Not everyone is aware of their respective roles in basketball; they only compare their overall performance in their respective teams, and it's pretty obvious that Abando has performed well, given that his team has won the championship as well.

Additionally, since Abando has not played yet, I think he deserves to be given a chance. New faces in the game might bring new results to the biggest game of our Gilas Pilipinas.

A team with KAT, Horford and Duarte is no joke.  KAT is gonna dominate this game on the I side if he wanted.  Knowing him he will sit on the outside and look for his outside shot. Between him and horford it's gonna be a tough cover between them.

Am I missing something? Al Horford is not part of the Dominican squad for the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Karl Towns from Minnesota Timberwolves and Lester Quinones from Golden State Warriors are the only two NBA players in their team. I don't know why Al Horford was not included in the squad. Perhaps the Boston Celtics refused to release him? And it would be wrong to say that Argentina could not qualify because of Dominican Republic. Their loss against Venezuela early during the qualifiers was the main reason why they ended up at the 4th position in Group E.

Question to folks from Philippines - you have arena with insance 55 000 seats and only 2 games will be held there, both on opening day. How and why? I expected that your national team will play there and final will be held there too

Here is Lithuania's roster.

These guys.
The memory of this team defeating Team USA back in the Olympics in 2004 is still fresh in my head. They cannot mess with this team as they can be lethal. Mostly known for big guys who can shoot threes with high percentages, I think Valanciunas is the biggest example of that.
It's probably our weakest roster we ever had. Weare missing maybe 10 or even more players, including Domantas Sabonis from Sacramento Kings and we have just 4 players from EuroBasket 2022 roster.
Our glorious days when we were kicking asses to USA and won medals is long time ago - we haven't won any medal since 2015. And we are going into this World Cup without big expectations.

Nice odds, though. I wouldn't hesitate to bet on the Philippines to win, as they are on their home court and will surely receive significant support from the crowd. The basis for those betting odds was probably their current standing, but in an event like this, home court advantage is a big advantage, so I'm all in with that.

Also, I'm thinking of betting on the spread too. It's currently +9.5, and I believe the home team is undervalued here.

I think those odds are pretty accurate and on point. I would wonder if it will be a game around the 10 point gap, the odds makers did a good job there.
Having KAT helps the Dominicans of course, only thing speaking for PH here is the home court advantage and a basketball love crowd that will cheer for them.

Unfortunately excitement doesn't beat talent so it a steep mountain to climb if they want to win. Everything is possible but they must have a very good day to beat even a just ok Dominican team.

I did further research after my previous post and discovered that the Dominican Republic is a stronger team this year. Not only will they have KAT, but they also have Al Horford as another big man. In addition, Chris Duarte, who is an NBA player, is part of the team.

Here's another interesting story: it's the Dominican Republic that prevented Argentina from qualifying for the FIBA World Cup.

Between the Dominican Republic and Italy, I think Italy would win.
Upsets can happen and Italy's roster is interesting though.
True. Italy actually surprised me with their recent win streak. But some are saying it is because it's just a friendly game, but we will never know.
For me, it will be a tough Group. The Philippines will also try to do their best and win this group to advance to the next round.
And you probably heard it from our country's national team coach that he knows that Italy is strong so, it's like he's suggesting that no matter what happens they'll be defeated by them so there's no enthusiasm in defeating them. Chot is classic and always being like him when dealing about the other teams.

If I'll be choosing one, I'll choose Abando. The guy has just proven himself in two tournaments offshore but with his South Korean Team but the thing with that is, it's hard to get such achievement on offshore leagues and he's shown enough on how good he was.

Well, it's not yet selected and there's still lot of time left for the coaches to decide and I think that's not an easy job for the coach. The thing with these critics which I say the most especially on social media, they think they're more capable of that decision. Over the two I think if Jordan Heading was just eligible to play, I'd choose Heading since this is a legit shooter.

If upset would happen, it would nice if Phlippines would win in this bracket.  Smiley
And there you go. Grin
My neighbors here keep on telling me the Philippines don't have any chance to win that group but I am against them. I really want them to see that they can also be a competitive team by using their speed and skills.

The chance of an upset happening is very slim, so it's indeed a gamble if we bet on the Philippines. However, since I just want to enjoy watching the game and support them at the same time, maybe I'll consider following my heart rather than my head. LOL... In this situation, it's hard not to be biased, as the FIBA World Cup doesn't happen every year. Let's see, maybe it will pay off, or maybe not—who cares?

They are making an effort to ensure they have the best players to represent the country, but I have doubts. Politics might still influence the selection process, with players who have connections being given the opportunity to play. I would love to be proven wrong, but that's the scenario I foresee. Anyway, let's not dwell on that.

If we're being realistic and evaluating the team's chances within the same bracket, the Philippines probably has the lowest chance. However, the fact that we have the home court advantage is a significant factor to consider, and it works in our favor.

Wow, that's an additional fact that needed to consider before placing your bet, though there are gamblers who also a fan that will disregard anything just to support the team they believe that have a chance to win or to cover the handicap, personally, I will watch and maybe just maybe will place some bet during the live game, might need to see how the performances of each team before taking that risk as it's really tough to assess if you will going to base your pick with the stats and not with the actual performance of the whole squad.

Taking both? Hmm, that's a good strategy and I think I will tail that. A little bit of a bet for the high risk money line and a bigger amount for the +9 spread. That way you are both being supportive of your country and a gambler too.  Cheesy

It's getting near. 9 more days. Let's just enjoy the friendlies and make some good analysis.

A good center would certainly be a big help for the team. KAT is not only a good center, but he is also one of the NBA superstars, so I'm sure he will be able to use his size to dominate the paint. The Philippines has a big player in Kai Sotto, with a height of 7'2", but he is not at an NBA caliber level yet. He is still young and in the developmental stage. Therefore, KAT could really dominate if he wants to.

This event is significant for the Philippines. With a team that lacks NBA-caliber players, they will need the support of the crowd. I'm pretty sure we will witness a sold-out crowd.

Dominican Republic is the team that the Philippines has a high percentage of winning but with the addition of Karl Anthony Towns, that possibility turn to very slim. Kai Sotto may contain him for a little while but with his experience in the NBA, KAT would wreck havoc in the paint and event on the perimeter sometime into the game so I'm not expecting anymore that Gilas chalked up a win in group A.

That's the reality: the Philippines' chances are very low compared to the talent of the Dominican Republic; they certainly seem to be the better team. I found some betting odds for the game, but I'm not sure if they're correct. The odds are as follows:

Dominican Republic - 1.2
vs.
Philippines - 4.75
