I'm surprised by the odds of Spain; they used to be a good team. Maybe it's because the two Gasols are not playing anymore, which is why their chances, based on the odds, have dropped. Personally, I still find this team a good one to bet on. With the odds of x12, I find it very attractive, and I might bet a small amount on them to win the competition.
Yes first thing I did upon opening the thread was look for Spain's odds as I expected them to be the second favorite. I also thought it's a good chance for the Spanish team to win since the USA team is composed of young talents.
They were an underrated team, I believe, so if we believe they are going to win, then I guess we should not doubt taking those x12 odds. Despite losing the Gasol brothers, they still have the majority of the talent that brought them success, if I'm not mistaken. So whether they lose or win, I'm sure Spain is not going home without putting up a tough competition.

Team Canada surprised me at first but it made sense after looking at their roster.

I'm not sure if this is the updated roster (https://www.fiba.basketball/basketballworldcup/2023/americas-qualifiers/team/Canada) but looking at the roster, they have some great players in the NBA especially SGA, so they can be stronger compared to the last time they were in competition.

As for our national team, they are in Group A. I'm not sure if the Philippines could at least win a game in the FIBA World Cup, but hopefully, they'll manage to secure a victory. Our ranking in international competitions, particularly in FIBA, is still quite low.

Currently, the Philippines is ranked at number 40. You can check the rankings here: https://www.fiba.basketball/rankingmen...

However, it's surprising that Spain is at the top, and their odds do not seem to reflect their ranking.

Though Spain lost the Gasol brothers but they are still one of the teams to beat. It's not the players who are playing but i think it's the system that is why we always see Spain in the quarters in the FIBA World Cup.

That @12.00 is worth a try, who knows that they will be the champion again this year.
They can prove themselves if they win despite not having the Gasol brothers, and I agree with you that it's the system that makes them a good team. The last time they won a championship was in 2019 when Ricky Rubio led the team.

Let's revisit the scoreboards and see how many players are still active now:

https://www.fiba.basketball/basketballworldcup/2019/game/1509/Argentina-Spain#|tab=boxscore

It's certain that Marc Gasol won't be playing.
Our beloved Philippines may be winless on their group but being there with the top guns i think is an honor and a win is just a bonus.

I also doubt they'll win, but seeing them being competitive is enough for me. And since Jordan Clarkson has confirmed he will represent the country, that would give them the confidence to play harder and aim for a win despite their low ranking compared to the teams in the same bracket.

Yeah, the Philippines is underrated when it comes to basketball so that's normal. This may be the time we can showcase our skills and maybe change that perspective.
However, it's surprising that Spain is at the top, and their odds do not seem to reflect their ranking.
Overall rankings, yes but remember USA is there so I guess that changes everything and I won't rely on that rankings anymore. Canada also is a strong team so Spain will have a hard time winning this FIBA Cup. Those who like taking risk for Spain will make some good profits if they win it.
I just wanted to create a thread for the world cup but thought " I better check if there already is one '  Grin .
Thank you for checking it first and coming here.
Another 3 weeks of waiting until the world cup finally kicks off.
We had tickets for 2 group games of the German team but unfortunately can't go because of work. I could go by myself but that's less fun, the flight is just 2 hours to Okinawa though.
3 weeks will be fast.
Wow, you can watch the games? Nice. They will play here in the Philippines but I am having doubts because of the typhoon, the rain won't stop yet and there's strong wind in some parts of the Luzon region. I hope before the game starts, this typhoon will be out of our area.
Beating Japan (without Hachimura) should be possible but Finland will be another hard game. People expect the German team to win it but I am not so sure about that, with Lauri they have a big name and the rest of the team also has some solid talent.

Getting out of the group would already be a success, everything else is extra for our German squad.
Finland is not to be messed with, they showed good basketball during the EuroBasket event.

Oh and here are the NBA players who will play the FIBA basketball World Cup 2023.
Canada looks great, but Murray is also questionable and could skip World Cup, with him, Canada has good chances to go till the end, and odds on that look good, @4.75 seems as value bet

will look through Canada preparation matches, to see how they work together

great topic BTW
But they still have SGA, Brooks, Powell, and Barrett. Still a scary lineup. Cheesy

1 or 2 days ago Jokic announced that he won't play at the world cup, so the chances to win for Serbia got significantly smaller after those news.

Canada has a great team

Jokic would not play, but Micic is questionable as well, so Serbia chances getting high are depending on draw, but QF is probably maximum that we can hope for

Nice thread. I’m surprised that Canada is on the second favorite to win the FIBA. I’m not familiar to there roster so anyone here enlighten me on what’s the backgorund of their roster for the bookie to give that odds for them to win? I was hoping to see Spain, France and Greece to be on that spot.

I wonder if the current odds of Serbia will still the same of Jokic decided to participate on FIBA this year. I think Serbia has a chance to beat USA if Jokic can lead his teammates since no one can stop him in the whole NBA league.

1 or 2 days ago Jokic announced that he won't play at the world cup, so the chances to win for Serbia got significantly smaller after those news.

Canada has a great team this year with a lot of high caliber NBA players: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (Oklahoma City Thunder), Jamal Murray (Denver Nuggets), RJ Barrett (New York Knicks) , Dillon Brooks (Houston Rockets), Oshae Brissett (Boston Celtics), Luguentz Dort (Oklahoma City Thunder), Nickeil Alexander-Walker (Minnesota Timberwolves), Cory Joseph (Golden State Warriors), Kelly Olynyk (Utah Jazz) and Dwight Powell (Dallas Mavericks) .

For me this team looks even better than team USA to be honest.

Whatever, I will watch it on TV. I think Japanese TV should broadcast some games here, at least the Japanese ones. And since my German team is in the same group I got lucky.

Speaking of which, I think the German team has a hard group. Australia we can't beat, their roster is too deep with plenty of NBA power.
We also have some NBA players such as Dennis Schröder, the Wagner brothers and ageing Daniel Theiss. Also some good Euroleague players that got 3rd place in last years Eurobasket.

Unfortunately Maxi Kleber doesn't play because of his recent beef with Dennis Schröder and Isaiah Hartenstein also won't play, don't know why, maybe because he just married.
