Ahh! Never mind, I had forgotton to trick the power supply into thinking it was connected to a motherboard, I love modular power supplies but they got me this time around, I hadn't even connected the 24 pin! All working now and doing great! Roll Eyes

Hi Guys,

Still having trouble here Sad Now when I hook up my Avalon4's they do not even light up or make a sound, all three of them. The usb connector is showing the red light in the middle again. Seeing as last time it just seemd to fix itself, I have no idea what else to try! I have flashed the latest firmware onto the TP-Link, restarted the cgminer, checked everything I could think of, changed cables etc...

Now I am using a HXi Corsair 1000W power supply.

cgminer status shows the unit alive:

Looks like problem solved for the Avalon3 as well! IT seems I inadvertently upgraded both firmwares on the TP-Link to the Avalon 4 version. Reverting back to the Avalon3 firmware (confusingly named exactly the same as the file for the 4s: openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr703n-v1-squashfs-factory).

Still didn't work, however I noticed the connector shipped with the 3s is slightly different than the few I got in the new package of 4s, namely it is a bit shorter and fewer lights:



Switching back to the old one and hey presto the old jet engine Avalon3 frighteningly whirred back into action! Damn the 4s are incredibly quiet compared I definitely understand what philipma1957 talks about in his review, if you value silence the 4s are awesome; like ninja mining Lips sealed

I'll post back a triumphant pic of my full set up later if anyone is interested, I also have 5 Avalon Nanos to get into gear too, should be fun. If I have any trouble I certainty know where to come, thanks everyone!

yeah  the quiet of them is truly great.  right now it is spring in NJ but it has been a bit cold.  So my tv den would be cold , but I am running the 2 avalon 4.1's I have pulling 1000 watts at 1850gh.

 My wife and I can watch the tv with 0 issues.  These are truly the most superior space heating miners ever built.  Underclock to the 800-950gh range and they are really quiet.  Plus they do well at watt per gh.

    If only they were 400 usd shipped not 550 for 1.
  I would have purchased 6. Not 2 + the free demo I reviewed.

Hmm just powered the TPLink connected to the still not working Avalon3 directly from a power board, still no go.

Something I forgot to mention earlier is the lighting situation on the connector between the Avalons and the TP-Link; My Avalon4 started working the second the red light in the middle went out, leaving only the blue and green. I cannot for the life of me remember doing anything to fix it, I had flashed the new firmware once or twice and run through the set up again but to no avail, infact I was halfway through preparing to restore my PC to an earlier time when I knew the Avalon3's were working when I noticed the red light had gone out, fired it up and away it went!

If you don't have a powered USB hub in there it will probably fail.

It could be since I'm using a Raspberry Pi.  But I was able to use a cheap hub not powered.   I have 3 Avalon 4.1's hooked up to it then to the Raspberry Pi.

But your questions are still relevant because my Older Avalon3 I have hooked up to testing my bedroom (before garaging them) is still suffering from the same issue. I am hoping a powered usb might fix it as it and the Avalon4 are both linked to WR703Ns that have usb power from my desktop PC:

But to your questions Dogie:
  • The Avalon4 is using an Atec HCG-900 and the Avalon3 is using a Corsair CS450M
  • I think you are right, the second orange "WARN" light was on and the last two green"PG1/PG2" and "N1/N2" lights where on solid
  • At the moment only one of each, but when I put it out in the garage and chain the 3s together with on TP-Link and the 4s together with the other and they will all will be powered via a powerboard

Thanks for all the advice guys! I'll get back to you and let everyone know how I went with the powered usb solution and chaining the three 4s together!

If all the 4s chain together nicely I'm guessing the most appropriate thing is to take the reaming issues (although the same) over to an Avalon3 thread?

Not a problem!  They will get it working. I know I did a lot of checks of basic stuff, then they did a team viewer session.    I specifically have to give Fengling some serious credit for all help he did on my first unit.

If you are not able to get it to work and happen to get a Raspberry Pi unit let me know and I would happily upload my image that is working with 3 units.

I can't imagine all 3 getting loose in shipping.   The Canaan Creative help can be found here: https://ehash.com/support/  They do have very good support from my dealings with them when I first set up and had a issue.

The good news is it's morning in China, I would send them a email showing problem.  I know when I had a issue like this they had me open it up and check connection, but I cannot imagine 3 having connection issues.  I would ask them to log in teamviewer session to look.    I also don't want to be the one to tell you to open up and check connection that should be them.

If you have a raspberry pi unit I could be of more help.

It seems as if the machine is failing POST (Sorry, this error is just beyond me at present, please help!) or worse a module is dead, which cannot be good. However as all three machines are showing the same behavior I am hoping it is some other networking issue.

On their website: https://ehash.com/product/avalon4-module-1t/ , they advertise 1.3 TH/s. But your guide specify a 1.0 TH/s. Did you try "Turbo mode"?

Yes, It goes to 1.3 comfortably and far beyond because the board quality and cooling system has so much headroom. There's not much point going above 1.3TH as you start dropping efficiency quite rapidly.

They changed the 'rating' to 1.3TH because it was getting unfavourable comparisons to other miners that rate at their absolute maximum (ie SP20's '1.7' TH).

What about noise level measurements? How can we more or less objectively compare it with other mining hardware before buying?

Spent about 30m looking for my proper decibelometer but couldn't find it. Lets put it this way, its the quietest thing in my farm by FAR. Its quieter than the PSU its running on :s

I've slightly underclocked my unit to 900GH, and in a 33C ambient the fan was running @ 1600rpm with unit temps of 44C. The heatsinks on this are excellent, and combined with being only 50% power consumption of a stock SP20 its always going to be very quiet.

It does make a difference as you need to be sure when people buy their PSU's for these.

8 pin if you've got them, although 6 is perfectly fine. Avalon units always have power connections with a large safety margin.

No, its just a sensible number. Chips are no where near any boundary under stock cooling as it works so well.

As Rabinovitch said, the power connectors clearly look like 8 pin and not 6 pin PCI-E.

Correct, they are 8 pin however to keep from confusing people I refer to them as 6 pin as that's what they will have seen on every other miner and are familiar with. If they already know the difference between 6 and 8 pin, then they don't need the information in the first place. Its a bit of a catch 22. You could probably also get away with only 2 PCI-E 6 pin, and even on one cable strand if its 16AWG, but again if you're in a position to use a more extreme arrangement then you likely already know that.

It has full DC2DC so it wouldn't give the intended effect.

0) What to Expect (top)
The Avalon 4 takes on a new form factor from its predecessor and is now a fully encompassed unit. Each Avalon 4 contains two hashing boards which are
in turn made up of 5 mini hashing boards to increase redundancy. An external controller is required, and can use a modified WR703N router or a Raspberry
Pi
. A 4 pin interconnect wire, a 4 pin to micro USB adapter and a micro USB to USB cable is included in the package.

0b) What You Need (top)
You will need a few accessories and a power supply to get started. I recommend buying the controller directly from Avalon as they will preflash it with the
correct firmware.

1) Powering (top)
Avalon 4's do not come with a power supply, and you will need a typical computer PSU with 4xPCI-E 6 pin power connectors. All 4 PCI-E connectors are
required. We also need to tell the PSU to always be on, as there isn't a motherboard to do this. Cut a paper clip into a U and insert it into the green wire
and either black wire to the side of the green wire. Tape it up for safety. The power supply will now be controlled by its switch on the rear socket.

      


2) Cooling (top)
Each module has its own 120mx38mm NMB-MAT7 4715KL-04W-B560mm fan that sucks air through the sealed case and out the back of the unit. Noise
levels are very reasonable even at 35C ambient and make a change from the Antminer S5 and SpondooliesTech SP20. Fan speeds are automatically
controlled although the user can override fan speeds.

      
 
      




3) Case (top)
Avalon 4's are entirely enclosed in an anodised steel case. A shipped unit weighs 8.7kg and the shipping box measures 230mm x 235mm x 490mm while the
unit weights 8.0kg and measures 160mm x 165mm x 390mm.

4a) Configuration (TL-WR703N) (top)
Connectivity has been updated to allow for up to 20 units to be daisy chained off one USB port.

Wiring:
  • Plug one 4 pin cable connected from the 4 pin header on the unit to the micro USB adapter.
  • Connect a micro USB to USB cable to the micro USB adapter, and then plug this into your controller.
  • More units can be added by plugging another 4 pin cable from the second unit to the first unit's other 4 pin header.
  • Plug in a network cable from the WR703N to your router, and power it on.

Configuration:
  • Power on the power supply using its switch at the back.
  • Make sure or your router's subnet is 0, ie 192.168.0.x. If not then change it to 0, this is just temporary. ***If this is not possible, see below***
  • Using a browser, navigate to 192.168.0.100 - this goes to the WR703N's configuration page.
  • Login using "root" as the username.
  • Navigate to Network -> Interfaces -> WAN -> Edit.
  • Change protocol to DHCP and click "Save & Apply".
  • Using a browser, navigate to your router and find the IP it has assigned the WR703N and navigate to that IP.
  • Navigate to the page Status -> Miner Configuration. Enter your pool information in the below format.
  • Navigate to the page "Miner Status" to check mining has started.
  • You can then change your router subnet back to whatever you are used to using.

Alternative Subnet Change:
  • Unplug your computer from all internet sources.
  • Plug in an ethernet cable from the WR703N to your computer.
  • Navigate to Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Centre -> Change Adapter Settings.
  • Right click on your ethernet adapter -> Properties.
  • Click on "Internet Protocol Version 4" and click properties.
  • Select "Use the following IP address" and enter the following:
  • IP Address: 192.168.0.1, Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway: 192.168.0.100.
  • Plug in an ethernet cable from the WR703N to you router.
  • Restart the configuration instructions as above.
