I do not believe OP with his fantasy story of finding 40 BTC.
if you just discovered it now, you mean to say other forum members on that site  were not that smart to recognize a bitcoin private key to sweep the wallet dry??

I want to believe you but I only believe in proofs. So here is what you need to do in order for me to believe you and many other people also.

Sign a message from that wallet with 40 BTC for everyone to see here, if you are saying the truth which I doubt you are then you will be believed in the forum.

How to sign a message is in this thread here:

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/how-to-sign-a-message-990345

And to be believed you need to not make any transaction so we can all know last transaction is from 2011.

In the end I know you are just trolling around, cause I have read same story thousand times until now.

If the users saying that they found a private key with a considerable amount of Bitcoin in a forum did found them, here's what they should do in order to try and find its previous owner:
-Move the funds ASAP to a secure address that you control
-Post the address in several places, like this forum and reddit
-If someone says they were the previous owner of those coins, request them proof that they control the forum account that posted the private key

It will always be difficult to track the original owner of these coins. Even if someone does have proof that they own the forum account that posted that private key, it might not be the original owner of those coins.

Either way, this question was most likely related to moral dilemma of some sorts. In the end each one of us would do its own thing. I just posted what I'd do.

Well the OP may be lying to get attention.

Transfer the 40 bitcoins to another wallet/address(if you really have the private key). if you don't someone else might find it out and do it lol. do whatever you like donate/keep/sell.

I was in the forum where you were, and I also found a private key that contains 150BTC, last transaction dated 2010, I wanted to post here but as you just done it, I will just see the reaction Of poeple before reacting.
Damn 150 bitcoins!  Roll Eyes

It was a private key, i found it in a forum.
Not in the darknet, in the clear Internet.

Best Regards!

Check the wallet address(es) and see if you can find something in the internet, if anyone has posted it and try to contact the owner.
Also check if someone has posted if he has lost the wallet or the private key of the address that this wallet has, I'm sure he will reward you.
If I were you I would give back to the owner (if he can prove it), just imagine if you lost 40BTC, what a bad feeling.
What if the owner is dead? probably the private key was there for 6 years.

LOL!
That gave me laugh just now. So thanks for putting the humor to this thread! Cheesy
That was lacking because it was getting way to serious with the above posters e-begging. Roll Eyes

You found the keys to a car. Can you take the car? Is it legal?

Don't be an idiot.  The money is yours.  It is not illegal to transfer bitcoin if you have the key to do it.  Having the key means it is your bitcoin.  Take it and transfer it to another address before another key holder does that.

Not really, what i would do is to donate 39 BTC to people who needs it. Like donating to projects everyone use, but no one donates to, like UNOMP, BCOIN, and many others. I would keep 1 BTC as a reward for fair distributing the funds.
But the question is, how did you found a private key in a forum, with 40BTC in the wallet ? normally as it is existing since 2011, it should have been aleready emptied.

You are a liar nemgun! You would take it like almost anyone else would take it! Like RawDog said, who own private keys own the bitcoins! Even if this is not a joke, someone already took that bitcoins cause this private keys was publicly exposed. I would took all that bitcoins, and I would probably cash out big part and with rest gambling baby, big time with 5 btc or more, like never before!

If you have private keys of wallet, congratulations, bitcoin is yours. You have the right to take these bitcoins, you are really lucky.
This address isn't used since 2011, I think owner from the first wave of bitcoin users and he isn't in bitcoin world anymore. But it's really strange that private keys was published on internet and nobody taked these bitcoins until now.

You found the keys to a car. Can you take the car? Is it legal?

More like...

Someone has signed the title to their car, had it stamped by a notary, then parked it in a public parking lot with the title and keys lying on top.

If you've published your private keys in a public space, you've given up everything that would constitute "ownership" when it comes to Bitcoin. It's irrelevant whether you've done this intentionally or accidentally. Archaic property rights laws simply can't apply to Bitcoin "ownership".

My signature is the only "rule" when it comes to Bitcoin "ownership".

That said, I don't believe the OP. I think he is simply trying to incite discussion.
