No. Boeing 777 flying at 10,200 metres (35,000 feet) can't be shot down with MANPADS such as Igla or Strela. It requires either sophisticated SAM batteries or air-to-air missiles fired from fighter jets.

Few days ago 247crypto provided evidence that rebels have come into the possesion of Buk medium range SAMs capable to hit aircraft-sized targets up to 25 km altitude:

This is tragic. People's lives destroyed because of bad leadership in both countries. I doubt we ever get a clear picture of how this happened and who is responsible.

This will be the heck of a mess to sort out!
First of my condolences to the victims and their families.  Sad

For economical and political consequences;
The first issue will be Schipol Airport, it will have a hard time to recover customers to Asia. Most of the passengers will prefer to be re-routed by South, which may cost NL a lot.
The RU-EU relations aren't already that good, if it comes to be shot by Russian SAMs it can be the last drop to put up the Iron Curtain back in place.

Just wonder who was the jackboot that sent that commercial plane down!...
Russia,
I'm going to sit on the fence with this one and wait for an investigation. Incidents like this in a war zone tend to be PR cannon fodder that everyone tries to capitalize on immediately without solid evidence which creates a lot of rumors and bad intel. there are reports that the AFP have seen such missiles in rebels control previously, but is that a rumor spawned by this incident or reliable? Who knows. Certainly not me.
If Ukraine operates these weapons systems as well, could the pro-Russian separatists have stolen one of them and used it?
Sounds like a reasonable possibility to me as well. I'm not familiar enough with the conflict in Ukraine to comment on the likelihood of it though. It's rather outside of my area.

Very important.

13 years ago, in 2001 the Ukrainian military had shot down a civilian aircraft, at an altitude of 38,000 feet.

Ukraine has not paid any compensation for the victims, and the court proceedings are ongoing.

Energy is Wealth
So a Malaysian Airlines flight MH17, Boeing 777 gets shot down on the 17.7 and then you have this wicked speech from earlier of the year from Christine Lagarde, managing director of IMF

Most of those died were Dutch nationals, while the crew were Malaysian. Most of the passengers were tourists, who were going to Southern Thailand and Malaysia. Not a single survivor reported from the crash site. (Source: Lifenews).

Russian fighter jets have been shooting down Ukrainean planes in that region... Maybe the same russian flying dip-shits got confused and shot down a plane from the wrong nation.

Do you have any proof for this BS? So far the Russian fighter jets have never crossed Ukrainian airspace. The only incident of Russians shooting down Ukrainian fighter jet occurred after the Ukrainians crossed Russian airspace without warning.

It will be interesting to see from which side the missile came from. This is just my opinion. Only my opinion. I think pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine did it. But where would they get Buk surface-to-air missile systems?
CNN said that a Ukrainian official stated that the plane came apart at altitude, which gives more evidence to the theory that the plane was shot down.

According to CNN: Adviser to Ukraine's Internal Affairs Minister: Plane was shot down by Russian Anti-Aircraft Missiles

A Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777-200, registration 9M-MRD performing flight MH-17 from Amsterdam (Netherlands) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) with 280 passengers and 15 crew, was enroute at FL330 about 50nm northwest of Donetsk (Ukraine) when the transponder signal was lost at FL330 at position N48.56 E37.21 at 13:43Z. The aircraft came down near the village of Shakhtarsk (Ukraine) about 56nm from the last transponder position.

Interfax reports citing an industry source that a Malaysia Boeing 777 from Amsterdam to Malaysia has crashed near the Ukrainian/Russian border, the burning wreckage has been located. The aircraft has been shot down, the agency subsequently added.

Malaysia Airlines have confirmed an incident, the aircraft did not enter Russian Airspace so far, about two hours after the estimated entry into the airspace. At 15:40Z Malaysia Airlines tweeted: "Malaysia Airlines has lost contact of MH17 from Amsterdam. The last known position was over Ukrainian airspace. More details to follow."

Ukraine's Ministry of Interior have confirmed the Boeing has crashed, there were no survivors.

The Ukraine have closed the airspace around Donetsk about 90 minutes after the aircraft disappeared.

And I highly doubt it crashed, some Asshole with a surface to air missile probably thought it would be funny to shoot down a civilian aircraft. ...
