Why is this turning into a choice between Russia and the West? Its starting to look like the fallacy that is US democracy, a choice between two evils to give the illusion of freedom. Where did the other options go, the option for the Ukraine to run its self or break up into areas of like-minded people? Most of those poor bastards are fighting for the place they call home but when it comes to the big picture they'll become serfs of either one group of power-hungry globalists or another. The best thing they can do is burn the resources, burn the pipelines, sow the ground with salt, anything to make the Ukraine worthless otherwise the trouble wont end until they're slaves of one side or the other.

Would the Ukraine be able to run itself? I heard they are dependent on a huge energy subsidy, so perhaps they will be "slaves"...?
