Exactly, just try to make good quality posts, better post less but higher quality than more but lower quality.
However, I know it is hard when you spend a lot of effort to create good post, and nobody appreciates it.

From my observation, it's not really that hard to get your first merit
I agree. If you know "forums kitchen" or had spend here some time before merit system appeared, then getting one or first merit is not that hard. Getting first merit is more unexpected than complicated. I cant even remember how I got my first, but I'm sure I want searching for it and did nothing on purpose to get merit. They just came suddenly.

I dont remember who said it, but I liked the idea behind that phrase - "the more you want to get merit, the far away it is". Dont rush to get them, be yourself and your merit will find you.

Getting the 1st merit is like getting first $1 Million.
From my observation, it's not really that hard to get your first merit and it does not always get easier from then on. Some members are lenient to newbies and would merit them for effort, even if they were wrong or it was just an inquiry. If a new member is posting useful content and not just spamming the forum, they would eventually get noticed.

As you rank up, so does the standard other members hold you to, so it could become harder to get merits if you do not equally improve your knowledge on topics you discuss about. Some members also simply target a particular rank and stop putting effort into their posts from then on.

getting a +1 merit here is harder than winning the nobel prize xD

Newbies who complain about not getting merits just look bad.

Life is tough, just keep on hustling.

Dale Carnegie had 3 rules that start with "C" which I always remembered and lived by.

Don't Criticize, Condemn or Complain

I'll tell you what, if you achieve a Nobel Prize in any field I will give you 480 merits which is enough to become a Hero Member with sufficient posts. Or you can just make some regular decent posts and I'm sure you will get some merits. You haven't really posted anything substantial so far so it's not surprising that you're so far meritless. Just start contributing a bit more but the merit system is doing it's job so far looking at your post history.

If only you didn't post 10 one-liner, you would have probably the chance of getting merits.
Merits don't come for free, but for actually helping the discussion with good content, knowledge, or even raising good question that can be useful for other to discuss about.

If you want to know more about merits, pleas read my post here: I started from zero merits exactly like you:
Ranking up is possible! 2900 Merits earned in less than 12 months! My 11 Hints!

honestly, this makes me very sad, even if i understand why this merit system is implemented for.

i am like 3-4 weeks away from my sr.member rank and this fucks me really up Sad

i'm sad, angry and shocked together X_x". now i have to collect like 150 merits in a short time but how Oo", i dont think that people will freely start to like everything i post... since humans are not generous, infact, they can be very harsh to others, being anonymous on the internet...
You made it this far with 100+ merits to your name. You must have been doing something right. Don't give up yet. As for members being harsh I think that's more of twitter thing lol

I was in the same boat as that guy, was already full member and next ranked seemed far fetched but somehow reached sr member just few months ago (took 3 years!), I think good start is to stop caring about getting merits and just give your honest thoughts on topics you are interested in.

If we keep thinking about the merits we will only get depressed as its a fact that you will not get all those merits instantly to rank up. If we can focus on your work, the merits will keep coming on our good posts.

If you don’t do PGP, you don’t do crypto!
November 25, 2020, 11:32:17 AM
Transplanted from the Wall Observer:

While BTC is flirting with its ATH, I reached a new ATH forum rank. I'm not much for self-glorifying rank-up threads in the Reputation boards, yet wanted to say sincere thx to everyone who helped me get here. I've had a ball (only one, not two #nohomo) until now, and I'm planning to keep that spirit up. Thx.

So, what's new? Smiley
Congrats for your new achievement for me its really dream as I also join this clube hopefully this will happen even very long way to go but doing good with positive mind.

Thx mate. The shitty thing is, I just realized that now my profile looks as if I'm a pré-Merit member who's never succeeded in getting more than 8 Merits during his entire membership on these boards.

Feels a bit like downgrading as a "big" 12-year-old kid in elementary school back down to suddenly being a junior in high school. Cool

^^^ THIS!!!

I have been complaining about the “grandfathered” merits since February–March 2018.  Now, I look like some idiotic “Legendary” who has earned only 1045 merits.  Roll Eyes  Did theymos learn nothing from monetary policy, Gresham’s Law, etc.?

For my part, I have taken to checking post histories before I award merit to those I’ve never seen before—especially those at the Newbie and Jr. ranks, and those in upper ranks who seem to have earned little or nothing above their “grandfathered” merit.  Not a few times, I have backed away from the merit button after a glance at post history revealed bounty posts or other spammish behaviour.  Also, I have recently developed a policy of never awarding more than +1 per post to a Newbie; since this is unfair, I have a very short list of posts to which I plan to return in a few months and add more merit, if I see evidence that the person still deserves it.

For me, it is especially bad because I registered my account 8 months before I started posting; and I have had a total of 23 months of major gaps in my post history.  I have zero grandfathered meritsall of my merits are earned—and yet, a naïve glance at my registration date would imply that I have at least 250 grandfathered merits, if not (after I reach higher activity) 500 or 1000.

The way the system is built, I am tempted to abandon this account after it reaches “Hero” activity (— because my signature PGP key fingerprint deserves background un-colours! —), and reboot with an alt account.  (If I don’t really retire altogether.)

Youthful accounts with high merit are glamorous.  Highly-ranked accounts don’t look like wise elders, thanks to the inflationary effect of grandfathered merits:  They look like people who have just been shitposting for a very long time.

friends1980, congratulations on the new rank.  Though wouldn’t it be much sweeter if you could dispense with the 100 grandfathered merits, and celebrate self-made Hero bragging rights after you have earned 500 merits?  At the rate that you are now going, it will not take long!

Anyway, a toast with something other than Chianti:

(buy your stock of champagne for the next 3 years people Wink - prices are ridiculously low atm, since meetings and parties are forbidden, therefore there's a huge overstock)

That is the purpose of the merit system!  For you see, a “platform just for Bounty” is a useless cesspool from which all of the legitimate users would flee.  Incidentally, that would cause the money to stop flowing here; so don’t whine about attempts to save the goose that lays the golden eggs.

... why do you mind spam so much?

it is impossible to get spam free forum with any merit system, merit system should be used for users to be ranked in accordance with their post usability and shared knowledge on the forum, but there is no guarantee that best posts will have more merit than other posts, or that users with most merit earned are the best posters on the forum

as well, there is no guarantee that new users will not try to earn something through bounty campaigns, there will always be new users just trying to do some bounties, I do not think that you can suppress that with any rule, merit system included

but on the other hand, why do you mind spam so much? you can ignore most of those, and just go over it, without campaigns and payments they will be fast out from the forum, since payments were their primary motive to join the forum
of course, there are users putting effort to find spam and promote fight over it, and I support fight over spam, but that does not seem effective, since spam will always come with new BTC price rise, and some of new members will stay with the forum as valuable members of the community, others will go for something else

and that is how the world is going on, you cannot expect that all new members are here to love forum and post quality posts

Everyone thought that the merit system cut the spam from its 2017 ATH.  Alas, it seems that the spammers were more demotivated by the onset of the 2018 bear market, which approximately coincided with the new merit system.

“Go, spam spam spam, go!” :-/

By a magical coincidence, it is empirically CONFIRMED SCIENCE that this 30-day limiter expires after not more than a time of exactly 30 days (2592000 seconds):

I have them for everyone (and I did include the source link to find them),

Thanks.  Either I’m blind, or I was just being rhetorical.  Cheesy
Got one for me?  Cheesy

It looks like the image hotlink will always load the current image, thus making any caption misleading after the passage of any significant time.  I suggest adding a caption to the image itself, and switching to PNG.

Tests on the current 976210_blue.gif:
FormatBytesSavings
GIF1995
PNG (ImageMagick)59270%
PNG (OptiPNG)40280%
N.b. that the PNGs would fit into a single packet at most people’s path MTU to the server.  For the optimization of professionally run sites, cutting RTT latency of page loads is much more important than bandwidth savings.

ImageMagick can also easily add the caption with -annotate and related font settings (or, of course, the corresponding APIs for whatever you are using on the server).

Protip:  Shoot at it until it dies.  The merit system was created to get rid of idiots who treat this forum as a “platform just for Bounty”.

Yes, I believe you can start doing good things here in the forum. Earning merit is also like earning your reputation. The reputation here is very important even if we are just using pseudonym. Once, you were able to get acknowledge by the higher ranks or the merit source which they own a lot of the merits either obtain by them or airdrop from when the rank and merit system was implemented still they got few merits holdings that could be rewarded on to you. We know that even if they are already legendary still they are learning as what I had thought in one of my thread that learning is unending process.

What do you mean by 'I just start working to get merit'? Merit needs to be earned with a good and quality posts. It's clear you're not in a position to do that.
I can see from your profile that you've registered more than two years ago, and that you haven't earned a single merit all this time. What do you think, why is that?
True, I haven't earned much merit yet either but I'm still relatively new to this forum and haven't been too active.  Wink

I am in freefall too!
Where are all those merits gone?
Check details in Top-50 most merit-earned topics each year, each month (2018 - 2020) can help to have some ideas. That topic is a hole in terms of topic (it is the biggest destination topic after WO. In history, most of big topics come from theymos).

By the way, I congratulate you LoyceV. theymos did not plan anything for the 11th anniversary so you might have your due diligent change to surpass theymos the first time with earned merit statistics.

  • Please accept my sorry if you see this update: @Ratimov, @zasad@, @Rikafip, @bullrun2020bro, @Bthd, @efialtis.

As I raised my opinion months ago that after the reallocation of merit distributions to merit sources, I felt people (not only merit sources) are more easily to send sMerit away. I don't call it as abuse but there are low quality posts which should not receive merit. I also see many merit sprees for nothing.

Recent weeks, I've seen some easier merit giveaways and honestly I don't like that but in reality spammers won't be able to go up too high in ranks.

Kinda net-effects from:
  • Rising stars
  • Rising topics
  • Inactive merit sources (might be not if looking at median of merit distributions)
  • Standards of sources or members on quality are decreased.
  • Restructures for merit distributions from English boards to local boards (maybe)
  • Changes in merit exchanges back and forth between ranks. That topic is outdated but you can use it and compares with updated data from DdmrDdmr Merit dashboard. Where receivers received merits from, and meriters sents merits to

Last 2 or 3 months, my earned merit statistics have increased but I notice most of my merit came from knowledgeable and reputable users. I did not receive much merit from lower ranks and it is strange.
