I think it’s going to somewhat dangerous for Hamilton if Russell does become Merc’s second driver.  Russell will def take some shine away from Hamilton.  And doesn’t  Hamilton always have a clause in his contract that says he has a say in deciding who his partner is?  It’s gonna be still Bottas imho.  Hamilton will want none of Russell.  Grin
Possible penalty for Vettel after accidentally blocking  Alonso in his out lap..  which I’m kinda feel happy for because Russell could’ve been out of the top 10 if Alonso made the hot lap.
It turns out that there is no such clause in the contract or there was no such clause at all, because the head of Mercedes, Toto Wolff, said that the team would hold talks with Russell and Bottas this summer and make a decision maybe before the end of the season. I think that in any case, Bottas should stay until the end of this season, especially since his results seem to be slowly starting to improve. In any case, Wolf says that Hamilton's position in the team is unshakable and the team wanted to continue cooperation, and a choice will be made about the co-driver. Lewis ' wishes are clear, but the interests of the team are more important and it is in favor of these interests that a decision will be made.

The possibility of raining tomorrow according to google has dropped to 25% from 35-40%  Cry.
Anyway, Vettel got 3 positions penalty for damaging Alonso's fast lap.

Great to see on breaking news in F1 official instagram that Lewis Hamilton has signed with Mercedes until at least the 2023 season, for another 2 years he signed with the Mercedes team in F1.This will give him the option to fight for that 8th title which during this year it seems not that easy for him to achieve after Honda having stepped up their game for real this time.
I do not understand why people assumed that he would retire. I mean dude is still fighting for the title races and that's good enough isn't it? Did Schumacher retire as soon as he wasn't the champion anymore? He raced 3 more seasons after his domination was over and not only that he actually made a comeback and finished 9th one season, as the best driver ever when he retired according to how many wins he had (now Lewis passed him) dude still was fine with coming back and being basically bad at that point.

So that is why I doubt that Lewis will retire as soon as he becomes second or third, he will continue at least some more years even after that 2023 as well. Obviously if there is any personal reason why he can't continue then I would understand that, but if he doesn't have that type of problem and he is doing fine then I believe he may race as much as 2025 at a stretch.

What a time for Lando, incredible but Verstappen did some small mistakes.
Hoping for the rain.

Ferrari preferred to start over position 10 over using red tires, a good choice?

The results of today are very difficult to assess for me, many teams have tested the new tire for Silverstone and have tested on the new red (C5) long runs. Tomorrow the weather should be better and sunnier and it should come only on Sunday the rain. The weather will definitely make it more exciting than last weekend. Maybe there are other tire strategies on Sunday?

1      Max Verstappen   Red Bull      1.03.720
2          Lando Norris   McLaren      1.03.768
3      Sergio Perez   Red Bull      1.03.990
4      Lewis Hamilton   Mercedes      1.04.014
5      Valtteri Bottas   Mercedes      1.04.049
6      Pierre Gasly   AlphaTaur     1.04.107
7      Yuki Tsunoda   AlphaTauri      1.04.273
8      Sebastian Vettel   Aston Martin 1.04.570
9      George Russell   Williams      1.04.591
10      Lance Stroll   Aston Martin 1.04.618

Great qualifying today with a very impressive performance of Lando Norris as he is on P2 with only 0.0048 seconds behind Verstappen. Perez on P3 and the two mercedes will only start from position 4 and 5. I don't think though that Norris can hold this position in the race tomorrow as the race speed of the Mclaren will probably be slower than the one of Red Bull and Mercedes. His teammate Ricciardo starts from P13 which makes me feel a little sad for Ricciardo as he seems like a nice guy and always performed very well too except for this season. Sebastian Vettel managed to beat Lance Stroll but may receive a penalty because he ruined the lap of Alonso because he didn't see him.

I missed both practice sessions but what caught my eye is Vettel at FP2 placing at 5th.  I checked the number of laps and it was 28 and 37 so it didn’t rain.  He was a good 1.2 secs faster between practice sessions too.  Hoping to see a good race for him.  Smiley

This weekend it smells like rain in Spielberg, so luckily it won't be the same race as last week. But even in the rain, no one except RedBull and Mercedes will have a great chance of winning. Or you think Ferrari also has a chance in the rain?

With rain, we know everything is possible.
Also, Ferrari got overheating problems 2 weeks ago in France.

If they have this problem they can use it as an advantage since with wet tires they could heating the tires faster than opponents, also as we saw in Monaco Ferrari is excellent with high grip.

I think they have a shot if it will rain.

Last week there was rain in forecast last week and actually started to rain maybe 10 minutes after race. I would really like to see wet race in Spielberg. Last week there was no questions about 1st and 2nd place, so rain may bring completely different scenario.

Boring race.

Redbull is too strong with the last update (irregular?) to the engine.
The only fun part of the race went from Ferrari, sad for the Leclerc accident at the start or he could end 5th.

The next race it will be here next week.

Mercedes is planning to add updates to its cars as it looks to regain its dominance in the Formula One world championship. So the current short term dominance by RedBull could be cut short. After Verstappen won the Styria Grand Prix, Hamiltondriver urged his team to make changes in the car in order to increase its speed.
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff said the focus is now on the 2022 car, but James Allison, director of the Mercedes technical office, made it clear that this did not preclude modifications to the current model.
The question for Mercedes now is that if they keep on fighting for this year's title, they could actually make that happen, but then next year's car will not be as good, whereas if they just let Red Bull win it this year, they will most definitely win it back next year for sure. It is just not an easy choice to make, it is really a difficult task and that is why I am not sure if they will actually do it or not. There is really no wrong answer here, it is racing and no matter what you do sometimes you just win because of luck, and sometimes you just lose because of being unlucky.
Of course cars play a big role, of course you need a good car, there is no denying that, but when two cars are as close as Red Bull and Mercedes cars, and when racers are this close in talent as well, it becomes a very tough task to win it by purely spending more money on this year's car, that is not going to guarantee anything.
The gap between the Mercedes and Red Bull cars is not so great that, like Ferrari, the championship is officially out of the fight, and there is no other way to call the recent step of the Italian team. Next season will have its own separate story with its own separate rules and priorities. And there is a chance to remain without a title this year, and not achieve anything next year, because many teams are already officially focusing on next year. Therefore, I believe that Mercedes will try to modernize the car until the last moment and fight for the title both in the individual competition and especially for the Constructors ' Cup.

@AndySt I believe that Mercedes will make few modifications now to keep Hamilton happy, because if he’s not happy then he won’t sign a contract extension hence they don’t have any option but to fulfil his wishes. However at the same time I don’t expect some major modifications immediately, but I feel they’ll strive to strike the right balance for being competitive now and then focusing on next year upgrades.

Dominicali president of Fia is not talking to change some rules in the following years.
His idea, for now, is to have 23 tracks +2.

The extra 2 tracks will be a rotation with other tracks, like bonus tracks in Mugello for example.

We are going up 25 races/year and I'm happy with it.

Marquez finished 7th, remember he started in 20th this is great.

Rossi fell again, Assen is no longer a good home for Rossi. Grin
Yep, as I recall, only Rossi was able to do something like this. But I don't know which series I forget. The Assen series may be an amazing series for Marquez. If you look at the second lap he is already in 10th position. Even Rossi may not have done it. This result is probably a warm-up stage and a sign to other riders that I (Marquez) are ready to compete with you. This result is also a sign that his mentality is starting to improve, his physicality has also started to be at its best.

I heard something like Toto Wolff claimed that if Red Bull continues to develop its car in this season, it will be around 2 seconds behind Mercedes in the next season. I wonder what his basis is. Will Mercedes really become that powerful in the next season?

We all know that there are going to be completely new F1 cars and new rules also. It's very exciting already.  Grin

So I think this is a bold statement, next year no one knows where the team including the car really stands. Not much will happen in the powertrain, where Honda and Mercedes are on an equal footing. I hope that Ferrari can still catch up with the two. In any case, it will be exciting next year.

I'm surprised that Mercedes still wants to bring updates this year, it was last denied.
