Also, Ross Taylor is out of the first two ODIs against Bangladesh due to injury. Indications are that Devon Conway will take his spot.
Is New Zealand touring Bangladesh or its other way around? I thought Kiwis skipped all away tours after the Covid outbreak or they already rescheduling new series.

In latest news from South Africa, Heinrich Klaasen has been awarded a contract by Cricket South Africa and he will be replacing Faf du Plessis. It makes easier for du Plessis to participate in various T20 leagues, as he no longer requires the prior approval from CSA (he had retired from test cricket last month). Also, Ross Taylor is out of the first two ODIs against Bangladesh due to injury. Indications are that Devon Conway will take his spot.

Pollard is one of the best players in the world for the T20 format. But he’s not that much good for ODIs or long-time matches. He does not have the patience to stay at the crease for a long time. Many West Indies players have such problems. Even if they play well in the T20 format, they will not be able to perform as expected in ODI and Test matches. I think they should be mentally stronger. Because they are physically fit, I think the problem is mental.

His ODI record is not that bad, BTW. He has more than 2,500 runs to his name, although the average of 26.43 may be a bit low if compared to the other all rounders. He makes that up with his high strike rate (>95 in ODI format). And he has 3 hundreds to his name, so we can't really say that Pollard doesn't have the patience to play big innings. Perhaps he should bat a bit higher up. Maybe at no.4?
If you consider him a normal player, Pollard is definitely a good player. But Pollard is one of the first class allrounder in the world of T20 format. He is not that much successful in ODI format like T20. I think maybe Pollard should bat at number 3, otherwise the current position is perfect for him. He is a very good finisher.

I am seeing the captaincy skills of Pollard for the first time, earlier i only considered Pollard to be a T20 specialist as i do not remember any outstanding performance in ODI. Darren Bravo is not an explosive batsman and he has the style of Lara but not consistent.

Pollard is a T20 specialist, but nowadays the 50-over format is also becoming more like T20. Totals in excess of 350 are no longer rare in this format. Only negative is that he is not consistent. Also, he doesn't have the patience to stay at crease for some time, if the situation demands that. He is really good if he comes out to bat after the 40th over in an ODI. But if the team is in trouble and needs to build a partnership, then Pollard is not the most suitable person.

And basically every player is more concerned about saving their place in their respective IPL teams rather than their national team. A lot of players are attracted to the huge sum of money that is paid in the auctions and performing well gets them retention which again gives them a lot of money.

It's much easier to get selected in an IPL team for local players and even get more chances than they might get in the national team which is another reason why players are more concerned about their performance in the IPL rather than when playing international matches.

I was watching the Afghanistan vs Zimbabwe test series and I love some of the talent being presented there. More test matches between these lesser known sides might bring more focus to international cricket than on the local leagues. I don't have anything against these leagues but the pride and respect one felt earlier by playing for their nation is now being lost.

I have to disagree here. International matches remain as the priority. If someone doesn't perform well at the international level, then he may not be able to get a good IPL contract. Also, getting selected in the playing XI for the IPL franchise is not that tough. There are 8 teams in total and they need to play at least 7 Indian players. That means a total of 56 slots, compared to 11 in the national team.

Lasith Malinga is still playing but only in the T20 version of the game and he might be looking to play till the world cup and then announce his retirement and he is 37 years old and even if he is in the team now he is not the same bowler he once was. Sri Lanka needs to find young talents and they need to find good bowlers, if not they will be struggling like they are in the past few years after the retirement of their well accomplished players.
Lasith Malinga is 37 years of age and he might be retiring after the next T20 World cup but he is still effective and can bowl his patented yorkers and he can bowl in small spells if he really wants but he has take care of his body and if there was no franchise cricket and T20 he might be bowling still in ODI.
Sri Lanka needs to find the young talents and their former players are in the selection panel and we are yet to see major changes in grooming the players.

~
Malinga is 37 years now and I don't know how effective he is nowadays. On the other hand, Pollard is not just one of the best limited overs players in world cricket right now, but he is also one of the best captains. Look at the way he captained the Mumbai Indians during the IPL 2020. Another half century from Pollard yesterday and now West Indies is up by 3-0 in this series. Darren Bravo also hit a hundred, but he was a bit slow.

West Indies bowlers are always lethal at home.
Some of the West Indies bowlers are fairly new to me and they were able to pick some wickets and even restricted the run flow but Sri Lanka was able to put a good partnership when it mattered and it would have been a boring match but now the match is in the closing stages and if Sri Lanka can pick wickets then they can put pressure back to West Indies even though they just need 9 runs to win from 12 balls.

If Malinga was in the team then we can expect an upset even in this situation but Pollard is in form and still in the crease and the captaincy suits him as he is leading from the front and i think he is performing much better as a captain.

now struggling with 148 runs and they lost 5 wickets and West Indies can win the match easily from a situation like this as they have the home advantage and Sri Lanka is not having any high quality bowlers that would put them in danger if it is a low scoring game.

Edit

Lost another wicket.
Sri Lanka was somehow able to pick up from that slump and after loosing their 6th wickets for 151 runs they went on to put together a 123 runs partnership between Ashen Bandara and Pinnaduwage Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva, just like his long name he was the highest run scorer for his team and that helped them to reach 274 runs and on reply West Indies is moving at a slow pace and if they do not loose wickets they can pick up the run rate as they have some batting powerhouse yet to bat.

West Indies bowlers are always lethal at home. Danushka Gunathilaka and Dimuth Karunaratne started well, but neither of the two could get to a half century. They were losing wickets regularly, and I don't expect them to get to a total of 200. Akeal Hosein is bowling really well, in his 6th ODI match. Only the debutant (Anderson Phillip) is not performing among the West Indian bowlers. Ashen Bandara is still out there and if Sri Lanka want to get to 200 plus, then he needs to stay there till the end.

Prithvi Shaw's performance in domestic cricket means nothing now. He wasted a lot of opportunities in the past, when he was selected in the Indian team. This performance would confirm his birth for IPL next year as he scored 73 runs in just 39 balls.

His berth in the IPL franchise (Delhi Capitals) is already confirmed and he doesn't need to do anything for that. Shikhar Dhawan is likely to open batting with Prithvi Shaw during IPL 2021, to be supported by Pant, Iyer and Stoinis in the middle order. His immediate target should be getting a place in the squad for the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled for this year. There is a lot of competition for top order slots, and to tell the truth Shaw is an underdog.

He's opener contender in the test format along with KL Rahul, Mayank Aggarwal, Rohit and Shubham Gill. As of now Rohit-Gill are front runner but as soon as their form dips. Team management have to look for other options because competition is tough. Its safe to say that no one has fixed spot in any format anymore due to sheer competition so current form and domestic performances matters.

Although for guys like Prithvi Shaw, they need to focus on fitness as well. Its disastrous for young guys to become golu molu.
Virat Kohli is the captain and he is working hard for his fitness and he will push the players to look after the fitness and in this day and age you cannot be successful if you are not spending time in the gym and having a proper diet.

About that.. He did gave a few stunning performance against Windies in home season and 1 against Kiwis in the NZ tho. Sadly for him, he lost his form after that.

I prefer this system very much. Once players form goes down, they should get back into the domestic and work hard to gain confidence and get their form back.
I view that as unfortunate, the balls in which Prithvi Shaw was dismissed in the series were exceptional in swinging deliveries in the start of the innings and instead of playing in the front foot he needs to stay deep in the crease and understand the bounce before playing his shots. He was trying to play shots in all of the deliveries and he was dismissed and he needs a solid defense and then apply that in the match and stay in the crease for the first 15 minutes and he will score runs. Just a slight technical change in his stance and he will perform well in bouncy pitches.

I never had a really good opinion about the Indian domestic system. There are very few tearaway pace bowlers in the domestic system, and the grounds are not very conductive for seam and swing movement. So you can't say that this is something that only affects Prithvi Shaw. Most of the other Indian batsmen have never played 150 kmph inswinging deliveries.
Things have changed and now people are training smartly, using slings in a small pitch so that he could face the pace and bowling machines are available for these players and they can practice is tight mats to get the pace and for match practice they need to play in those pitches to get the confidence.
