Actually, all altcoins are good for long-term investments, living from our own smart in choosing and studying from the number of altcoin prospects in the future is pretty good like ETH and BCH it seems to me. Definitely coins that are guaranteed to stick around for years like AMB/ETH/ICX/BTC. Coins that have good teams and a real world use case.
From my own,I think ETH and NYC is a good choice. Ethereum is still growing stable even all of the other coins are going down in the market and its same with BTC if not 100%. I think this two are the good coins that were adopted by superb and enthusiastic project.
ADA / cardano is not a bad choice, but for the long term you better choose Ethereum. Ethereum has all the fudamentals and the making of projects that change the world. Even today I will let you do it yourself and you will see that if you take the time and really look into what Ethereum built and designed to do, you will be amazed and soon invest in Ethereum.

I wouldn't be worried too much about scaling which has many people poopooing cryptos future. Assume it will scale in some years and then ask which ones we will really need. Many ico ideas are alright but just not the real usage of crypto like trustless contracts and truly decentralized data and applications.
On a general perspective, most of the coins we have in our various bags have become long term despite the fact that we never wanted them to be long term. The red market has affected them badly. Although, good projects are still there and one may need to consider and invest in them, then hold for long term!
