Gov don't realize that making something illegal does not  make the masses stop doing it? People did not stop smoking pot because it was illegal, they can't even keep drugs out of prisons.

I'm surprised he didn't just leave the USA and operate his business from somwhere outside the reach of US cops, like Russia. Then he would be totally safe

Right.  He goes to jail.  He goes directly to jail.  He does not pass go, he does not collect 200 bitcoins.

And good fucking riddance.

I do sort of feel bad for the guy.  Federal prisons in the US are harsher than some third-world prisons, and the treatment of prisoners is sometimes unconstitutionally harsh.  But that's a different issue.

EVERYBODY is better off with him in jail. Consider that Silk Road was not just drugs.  It was also arms deals that contributed to gang warfare, religious jihad, and criminal murder.  It was also extortion payments, slave sales to and by pimps including sales of underage girls for use as prostitutes, and transfers of money to jihadists and other damned murderers.

This was all going on through his website, as well as him putting out a murder-for-hire contract?  He is exactly the sort of person that the nation has the right and duty to separate from society for the sake of the welfare of all its citizens.

As far as Bitcoin is concerned, these are growing pains.  Give the Lions a bit of time to adjust to the new technology, and you're going to see crooks getting busted absolutely regardless of whether they're using bitcoin. And that's the way it needs to be.

Regarding arms... you can go to a "gun show" just about any southern state and buy whatever weapons you want with cash. Anonymously.

Yes you can but that's still illegal.
Funny how no one seems to give a damn about the law being broken in person in places like that, but do it on the internet it's a major threat. The double standard should concern anyone interested in real justice.

...which aren't many people.  Most folks are too busy worrying about honey boo boo, the Kardashians and their favorite sports team.

Mericans have a very coushy life compared to the rest of the world. They don't care about anything because they have that luxury. Every one of them should have to spend a year living hand to mouth in an impoverished country to give them a true world perspective.

This is god dam wrong. Ross is a hero and shold be rewarded for all his hard work. He gave everyone a safe and secure place to buy and see drugs.
Where I live if I want to smoke  joint I need to go down to the ghetto and buy it from some gus who most of the time look like they want to rob me.
This is not what getting high is about. Its about peaceful relaxation not sitting on the edge of my seat wondering if this dealer is going to pull a gun on me and rob me.

Does anyone know if Ross is planning an appeal on the sentence?

Well we may hold our own political opinions of whether it was right or wrong morally but in the eyes of the law what he did was wrong on numerous counts and he's paid the price for defying those laws. And yes, he's going to appeal.

Forgive my ignorance but did he actually sell drugs or simply create a marketplace for drugs to be sold?

Doesn't matter, really.  Knowingly profiting from illegal activities makes you guilty. Add facilitating them by providing a marketplace, and you get criminal conspiracy and accessory after the fact to thousands of things that went down. Under law he's considered worse than any of the individual sellers.

And If I recall correctly, wasn't there a post on here from someone who said they had bought mushrooms or something from him?

He gave everyone the opportunity to give their address to some gus from the ghetto who most of the time look like he want to rob you.

If you really did buy from the silk road then how could you buy off someone without giving him your address? That doesn't seem safe or secure to me.

Remember those arrests of localbitcoiners? the arrest of bitcoin trader bruce wagner in chicago? its all the same ploy ...

And there will be idiots here, who would justify those arrests also. Remember the arrest of Michael Espinoza and Pascal Reid (Michaelhack and proy33 on localbitcoins, some of the most trusted vendors at that time). They were charged with unlicensed money transmitting and money laundering. Their cime? They violated the Florida’s Money Laundering Act, by trading in currency worth more than 10K USD.  Angry

All of you that care about him should take up a collection to hire ex-navy seal commandos to bust him out of jail and smuggle him out of the country.

Everyone cares deeply until they have to take action then not so much anymore. End the Fed, End the Fed. Let's go march on Washington! Oh, I'd love to but this differential equations class has been kicking my ass and I have and test tomorrow. LOL

Wow you've got a very active imagination, SR didn't sell any guns so your accustions on funding gang warfare and jihad are ridiculous, borderline insane to be honest. These so called hitmen contracts were (I believe) concoted by the Feds (the same Feds who are now under investigation for their own corruption and money laundering Wink). He hasn't been charged for that offence so we can safely assume it was all bullshit and just a devious attempt at character assassination.

He has been charged with attempted murder in Maryland. He still has to face those charges. Even if it was fake, he still will face those charges.

is it a good or bad news to Bitcoin. I think it is bad, because now it is not the key to let more know bitcoin, but to let more people to accept and use bitcoin.

A negative propaganda has been going on against anything linked to Bitcoin, ever since Julian Assange of the Wikileaks took the decision to accept them in mid-2011. Darknet ventures such as Silk Road, Agora, Sheep Marketplace, Blackmarket Reloaded.etc just gave the FBI more ammunition to tarnish the reputation of Bitcoin.

Yes he sold mushrooms at least in the early days of the silk road.

OK. So anyone selling shrooms should pe locked up in prison and given life sentence without parole.  Grin

No amount of FBI propaganda is going to hide the fact that Ross Ullbricht was imprisoned for daring to stand up to the big three (bankers, pharma and Mexican drug cartels).

There's no propoganda. He was locked up for being a darknet drug kingpin (amongst other charges) whether you like it or not. Is it propoganda from the bankers and big pharma when gangbangers of petty drug dealers get locked up? No. Break the law go to jail. He knew what he was doing (and I'm not saying he was right or wrong) but to call it propoganda is just conspiracy theory.

However, the article also gives a link to a first-hand account by someone called Winter, who was present during the trial. I have not had a chance to view the video yet though, so I don't know if it gives many more details.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJMjGLcdtOA&t=48m5s

That's Alex Winter director of Deep Web and Downloaded (and also Bill from Bill and Ted). I haven't seen the interview but am listening now.
