If you were a manager or a teammate, what would you do to Bailly after that penalty? Have a look if you didn't see it, it was a no-look jump attempt - in a knockout shootout.
I would have challenged him even if he scored, he missed though - and Ivory Coast lost the game.
I knew he was going to miss it the moment he stood like he was on top of the world; I have no idea what he was thinking; this is a national award, and everyone was expecting the best, and all he did was gamble. How do you stand an inch away from the ball like that?.

I had a quick look at the games yesterday, the quality of football presented is really bad. I won't watch anything until the final.
Both games I watched yesterday were excellent; there were some dull times, but the attacking force in the Ivory Coast - Egypt game in the second half was insane. Prior to his injury, Egypt's goalkeeper made some outstanding saves to keep his team in the game.

Remember when Ballotelli tried a no look backheel when he was at City and what happened to him after that? Benched. He just needs to be benched, and that's it, nothing more. Even if he would have pulled it off, you simply don't do that at any level of football. There's actually to me not such a fine line between showmanship and foolishness as some players like to think. There's simply no argument on how that kind of attempt could ever gain anything for your team other than to show you disrespect a lesser opponent -- and he's forced his team to pay the price for that.

Anyway, I'm not going to throw more scorn on this tourney. The actions of a few always seem to take the spotlight.

I watched Egypt players as closely as possible yesterday and well... they barely deserved to go through as the underdogs. I only question that they saved their best for extra time, clearly. And still had to go to penalties.

I was smarter this time around and tuned in on both matches just before penalties. There was a couple of strange decisions there, I guess players just have the need to do something to stand out. When it works, everything is peachy, when it does not, well Ivory Coast goes home.

We had one step penalty - missed, panenka - scored, all kinds of funny runs with small steps and what not with mixed results.

Well well no goals today.
Now the QF began. Im the only who trust Guinea over Mali but unfortunately not sum a point because they win in the penaltys(in superbru im talking).

For the QF and for what we see this its gonna be so close for all the matchs.

Morroco Egypt seem like the best match but in this competition no one knows.

almost four hours of football, and we are still to see a goal today at AFCON

Egypt passed to next round, and their clash with Morocco is African classic derby? IMO, Morocco would easier pass Ivory Coast, and this one with Egypt could be another goalless draw

Turned out to be another goalless draw, I had thoughts of placing both fixtures Under 1.5 goals each, now I wish I did.

I'll be ending the week as joint worse player of the round, with just 4 points in this round... What a shit round for me  Sad

I'm surely going to put quite a bit on the line for the next round on the under bets.

Guinea President forgives players but asked the officials to return the remaining funds.

After they were eliminated from the competition by Gambia, the military President demanded that the players reimburse all money spent from the country's pocket and that all foreign-based players leave the country immediately. He was enraged because they had fallen to a lesser country.

He changed his mind after a quick discussion with the players at the military base, but he insists that the officials return the remaining balance to the nation, and he will continue to assist the squad for a better future.. Crazy if you ask me.

We experienced a similar incident a few years ago in Zimbabwe, where Olympic teams were imprisoned and ordered to pay back every cash earned during the games for failing to impress.

Egypt advances to the next round of the competition after an impressive displace against the elephants of Ivory Coast, it was a match made in heaven, the worse teams are performing better than the best teams in the group stages

@igehhh I get that. Like I can still watch Champions League after my team gets knocked out and I can even foresee we will never make it past group stage for a few years, if even we will be in the competition. Good luck to Nigeria at World Cup!

Now my team is out, I suppose I have to support Cameroon, the home team. Since it looks like the refs are corrupt Wink

will be interesting to see Morocco and Senegal, looking at form for all the rest, this could be a final

Egypt is playing today, does Superbru counting draw just for penalties, forgot from last Euro, this one seems to get to penalties, IMO
Mali was good at group stage, and should pass-through today

I think we might already be seeing the game of the tournament so far today (Ivory Coast/Egypt) but Morocco Senegal is hopefully going to be good too... as well as the winners of those later on.

Superbru counts the end of extra time so it's a draw if there are penalties, so yes, worth making some thoughts on this too if you think the teams could go into ET.

From Superbru:
Code:
What happens if there is a penalty shootout?
Your pick will be scored at the end of regular time or the end of extra time if the match is drawn after regular time. If a match goes to penalties it will be scored as a draw.

Yep, Superbru takes into account result after extra time in knockout stages. A bit strange until you get used to it. Suppose it is the same for AFCON, can't find it now, but it is stated somewhere on the site. It was like that for Champions League, EURO, COPA.... so I am 99% sure it is here as well.

Senegal remains the competition's worst team. I'm still baffled as to how they got to the quarter-finals, they needed two red cards to finally score open play goal.

Malawi has been overshadowed, and Morocco now leads 2-1. I'm not surprised because I expected Morocco to win, but they had to fight their way out, and Malawi put up a good fight. The game is still going on, so we'll see what happens after 90 minutes.

The fact that all of the round 16 match have had 1-2 red cards per match appears to be a script to me. The level of corruption at this year's AFCON is insane; they're killing the game with unwarranted red cards.

It's literally crazy, and funny enough they're still yet to concede a goal in this tournament, weird. It's just funny that they might advance way further into the tournament.

They are the luckiest team in the competition since, first and foremost, their group was the weakest, and they had to qualify by winning only one game and scoring only one penalty goal. They've been good defensively, with world-class defenders and a FIFA best GK in goal, the maestro of clean sheets, but they're not living up to expectations.

Morocco have finally restored parity just before the break after going behind just after 6 minutes into the game, the pressure would be much more on Malawi from here on. It's been coming all along, isn't it ?

Comoros got many gloryhunter fans during game Cheesy. When I saw news about their squad problems, I was sure that they will be simply destroyed. But they managed to give good fight, even despite early red card.
Did you see the stampede during the Cameroon - Comoros game?
Apparently 8 dead so far, with additional 7 in critical condition.

I laugh when they get the anthems wrong, when their referees signal the end of the game 10 min in advance and when all these organizational mistakes occur but things like these should never happen. If they are not ready to host these competitions, they should simply not be held at all.
It's sad to read about. All these things that you mentioned shows poor level of organization. Accidents which costs lifes of people can't be justified.

It's something unbeleavable that they finished 1st in group with just 1 goal scored. I barely can remember something similar. If not these 2 Cape Verde red cards I'm not really sure that we would see confident Senegal win.

Sorry that I sort of lost interest once Algeria went out, but I should watch if possible some of the games as they start around the end of my shift and I have a free day tomorrow so I can sleep late and destroy the rest of my week lol
I'm still watching for the sake of love for the AFCON, but my interest has waned since Nigeria was eliminated! I currently only watch a few games at a time.

This is getting ridiculous. Senegal with 2 players more and 0 shots on target. Come on, grow a pair, and play to score a goal.

Maybe if these other guys get 2 nore reds it will be enough for victory in extra time  Grin

^ Agreed man. Of course happy to get another win and a progress on my team plus some freebets back, but ridiculousness is already a word not apt enough to describe this tournament.

I still want Senegal to lift the trophy but they better play to deserve it over the next couple of games...

Think I said about sending off being good in afcon way back on Matchday 1, and someone else was saying the odds are still great in KO stages. You guys think that's it dried up though? They should be putting the 4/1 odds on no sending off the way things are going. Refs do seem to be really siding the favourites...

Three red cards in four games is becoming very irritating; this is a knockout stage, and the referees need to pay closer attention to details before issuing cards.

It's as though the referees aren't using their own initiatives whatsoever, they just follow the textbook guidelines of FIFA relating to fouls and make really absurd decisions that tends to ruin games even from the very get go, as a referee your call is the final say whether or not you're being signaled to make a review by the VAR.
~snip~
Officials from the VAR are a part of the problem. I believe they are being manipulated since both players were initially given yellow cards, after which they began rolling on the pitch, and the refs were summoned by VAR to evaluate the occurrences on a slow motion camera, which I believe was a terrible idea. I didn't see why the cards were awarded based on the players' reactions because VAR is meant to stick to the ref's initial judgement.

As you stated, both players merely went for the ball, but their opponent's legs were already on it. The game was marred by the officiating.

I'd say Comoros really should be proud of themselves and go home with their heads held high, it was a great performance from them, despite their unfortunate circumstances.
They did themselves proud because no one anticipated them to get this far; they have a fantastic team, and if they keep playing like this, they will be among Africa's top teams in the next five years.

Did not watch the game but I can't believe they were that close with 10 man and without a goal keeper. Obviously the guy that took the position was at least somewhat competent as goal keeper. Any comments if somebody actually watched the game?
Despite the Comoros' early red card, they kept pushing; the scoreline would have been different if Cameroon's GK Onana had not been on top of his game; the game's funniest moment came when the Comoros Player-GK thought he was playing as a defender and had to hide his hand to prevent the ball from touching his hand; he forgot he was the GK. ( the second goal)

The goalkeeper made some outstanding saves. His performance left me speechless; he did his country proud.
