after all, de gea has played well, logically there is no single player who wants his team to fail, sometimes the fans really have shit mouths.

Yea! That is very unfair!
He even touched the ball on several occasions, almost defending.

Man United had all the conditions to have had a better overall performance, throughout the match.
But as they failed to prove that they were superior to Villarreal, they were subject to the penalties that is a lottery. Therefore, it is the fault of the whole team, without the goalkeeper being less responsible in this game.

These are the penalties that I have never seen before until 11 players became executors. Poor De Gea, he failed. I just curious if De Gea making a goal and score to be 11-11, who the next executor? the substitution player?

At the end of the 11 players of each team, to score a penalty, and to remain tied, the sequence of players resumes. He scores again the first player who scored the penalty, and so on.

btw, I am amazed by the crowd on social media, why they seem to blame de Gea for MU's defeat...

But unfortunately, De Gea failed to enter the ball when he became the executor of the 11th penalty. The ball kicked to the right of the goal was anticipated by the goalkeeper from Argentina, Geronimo Rulli. After the match, Manchester United supporters were disappointed with De Gea's performance.

Agree, Manchester were closer to winning and better during the game but failed to score the second goal and resolve the match.
Penalties are always a lottery and this time Villareal had more luck.
I really forgot the last time I watched so many penalties, it was really exciting and fun  Cheesy

Some players at Man United were not at their best, like Bruno Fernandes, and that may justify not having scored more goals during the 120 minutes.

What surprises me about penalties, was not the number of penalties, but the fact that it took 22 penalties for 1 player to fail. That yes, I don't remember seeing it.

What a game! I expected it to be quite defensive and boring, it actually was during the majority of the 120 minutes, but the penalties at the end were really exciting.

I'm glad that Villarreal won it at the end, Rulli was close to a few penalties before he saved De Gea's.
This is their first trophy in club's history if we do not count the Intertoto cup which they won twice before.

Yeah! It was more exciting and tense than I expected. That's why I love football. It's way more than just a game where you score a goal to win a match.

By the way, congrats to everyone who bet on Villarreal.

Yesterdays penalty shoot-out was the longest i ever witnessed live. The game itself was not that exciting but also not completely boring and villareal could keep up with manchester united way better than i expected. ManU was my big favorite for this final as they simply have way better (or only more popular?) individual players. Spanish teams just always do well in the europa league, for teams of other big leagues like england and germany the europa league seems often more like an inconvenience than a exciting championship that everybody wants to be in. Also big congrats to unai emery, he won the europa leauge 4 times now with 2 different clubs.

Well well well and that's how Manchester United failed to clinch the UEFA EUROPA CUP after so much hype and good form, without taking away the fact that penalties can go either way.

Don't want to blame anyone or start pointing fingers but I still feel De Gea wasn't at his best because a good goal keeper has to save at the least one penalty kick but this didn't happen, players are tired maybe.

Anyway this is life you can't win everything, tough luck Man United and big congratulations to Villarreal

Well done to Villareal and this showed that there are no real favs in a final game.I was hoping for penalties and I saw a really good number of them.De Gea is just another goalkeeper and if he would have saved some penalties the game would have gone otherwise but no one is to blame in a final as I am sure both teams gave their maximum and both teams wanted the trophy.Penalties in computer games are called sometimes "sudden death" and it is just plain luck.Again no one is to be blamed and congratulations to Villareal for this Europa League win which I think is their first in their history.

If you ask me, the whole game Manchester United were having trouble finding an opening. The goal Cavani scored was lucky enough to fall quite easily for Cavani rebound off the player. I think it was well deserved for Villarreal. Just think of the pressure they would have been facing De Gea. I was thinking of somebody missing within 5 penalty shots but they all scored. United did well but really sorry for them not getting the proper results.
Yeah Villarreal deserved to win. Seeing all players from both teams shooting penalties is something we see raaaarely and I don't blame De Gea for missing it. As you said the amount of pressure in that lottery, as coinlocket$ described it, is surely horrible.

-snip-
Wrong in terms of trusting ManU too much and underestimating a little Villarreal. My bet was small so no regret really Smiley

I see a lot of people putting the blame on De gea but if you want to win a highly competitive knockout match, you've to win in regular time and not leave anything to chance
This is very true, as a penalty shot out is more of a 50/50 thing. Experience doesn't play much role here neither do the better teams always win. Its more about the tension that comes with it for both the penalty shooter and a little keeper experience. Everyone played an awesome penalty yesterday except for the last penalty by De Gea which eventually cost them the match.

I rather blame Ole than De Gea. The manager in which Ole approaches finals marvels me. If I were him, I wouldn't have used De gea on the post.
You can't entirely put the blame on the manager over Manchester United lose yesterday. For all you know it, it was a game plan that was sustainable till the penalty was lost by De Gea. Both teams played well, with each team dominating a half of the 90mins. Apparently, G. Rulli proved himself a better penalty shooter than De Gea yesterday night but, its not entirely a keepers job to play penalties.  They do play quite alright but, its more of a function reserved for the regular footplayers.

Well the same goes for Rulli because both keepers play for a full 120 minutes and both didnt manage to save any penalty before their turn. I just had the hunch that after the 6th shooter from both teams scored, I knew for a second that this might end with either of the keepers failing to score. Rulli took the shot first and managed to score then I had the hunch that De Gea might fail

Well I gotta say that Manchester United did all they could for this game and it was basically 50 50 at the penalty shootout so yeah its all good though. Runner up in Europa League and 2nd in EPL, next season would be better  Smiley

For sure it was 50/50 such is penalty. If anyone can blame de Gea they are idiots. As I thought last night, super hard game to predict, and no real favorites even if bookie odds said it was Man Utd.

Getting second place after trying so hard is the worst feeling, and we shall see next season how this impacts them. Most teams after coming so close then just drop away. You have to be so strong to try again and win.

This game is a joke (I am pissed), Villarreal dominating the first half and scored then it was totally the opposite in the second half, no goal scored in extra time, very late substitution, then penalties to see it kicked 11 times.
Villarreal 1 - 1 ManU /120
Villarreal 11 - 10 ManU /penalties  Lips sealed
Congrats Villarreal, didn't see this coming.

I couldn't agree more, I actually expected a lot better from Man Utd, I thought they'd dominate the game and win with relative ease, but Man Utd were never the better over the course of 90 minutes, I wouldn't blame De Gea by any means, any one could have lost a penalty.

It was a deserved victory for Villarreal, however, I feel somewhat bad for for Ole, he's done a fantastic job with Man United and a silverware would have only made more sense.

He is one of best goal keepers but he has bad record for penalty saves.
LOL, looks like that's De Gea's weakness all this time. But you shouldn't blame him for the failure suffered by Manchester United in this final because during the 120 minute of the match, the players actually did not manage to score more than 1 goal against the opponent's goal. I felt they were the favorite before, but they failed to do well.
De Gea has amazing saves with his foot but he does not have good penalty shooting. I can not forget the match between Spurs and Manchester United a few seasons previously, when De Gea saved a lot of shots from Spurs and help Manchester United had one point.

He is the best goalkeeper with foot-saving in my opinion.

About the final, Manchester United did not able to control it and they brought the match to penalty with one goal from Cavani regardless of the dominance from Villarreal. I think it is a fair win for Villarreal.

De Gea might be so good in regular play, but not in penalty shoot out especially for the final few hours ago. His movement is too slow compared to Rulli. Rulli made more correct movement and he had faster movement than De Gea. Too bad De Gea also made a mistake as a penalty taker as he did it too slow as well and Rulli could save it easily.

What a heartbreaking loss for the Devils, but it was a great game.  Both teams played quite well, brilliant passing, and great defense.  Both goals were excellently played, no gimmes there.

Solskjaer's hands were tied with substitutions, his depth sucks, and his best team for the situation was already on the pitch.  Damned if you do, damned if you don't.  At least I get to say that Arsenal lost to the eventual champs.  Tongue

Congrats to Villa Real, well deserved championship.

I hate that it had to end on penalties, I don't know why they don't just play two games for the final.

I still think like you hahay that ManU will win this game, just placed a (small) bet for them to win @4.9, attractive odds you know but not 100% confident either Undecided
It's already 1-1 now and from the pressure on the Villareal side it's possible they might lose the game, manutd are controlling the midfield now and there have been some goal opportunities as well..... Good luck on your bet
Thanks Mistafreeze, I lost it since the regular time ended with a draw. I was about to bet on BTTS @1.4 or ManU @4.9 and choose the latter which turned wrong. Hope it will be just wrong in the regular time and not in extra time otherwise penalty kicks are pure hazard Undecided
No ManU @4.9 wasn't a wrong bet IMO, because it ended in a draw. For me it shows there was obviously value in those odds and you have earned some positive expected value with this bet. If you are a regular punter, it's better to earn EV than to win few bets with low odds on the long run. Otherwise you'll lose money at the end.

Congratulation to Villarreal fighting to win the title against the champions' favorite. Match are never easy and Villarreal is lucky enough as 1 in 11 Manchester United players fail to score well. I don't think De Gea deserves ridicule because he did a good job but luck was not on their side. What's great is that 22 players get the chance to take the penalty kick. Something that rarely happens in final.
Congratulations Villarreal.

However, I am shocked because the final match gives me a surprising statistics for David De Gea. He is one of best goal keepers but he has bad record for penalty saves. I have never know it after the final match. But Manchester United can not say the failure is because of De Gea. They played worse than Villarreal in the match and as an upper team in pre analysis before the match started, they should do better.

Cavani scored again but can not bring another win to Manchester United and Mourinho is the latest coach helped them win a title.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got it wrong here he ought to have substituted Degea and bring on another goalkeeper having known how poor De Gea is in penalty shootout
Congratulations to Villarreal who are a tactically disciplined side defended well took all their penalties perfectly, I will attribute Man Utd loss to arrogance by underating Villarreal unfortunately they have themselves to blame haviing paraded a star studded squad ought to have won that match in the regulation time.
