YES. I think we need the king of altcoin and that is ETHEREUM. Simply holding Bitcoin forks like Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold doesn't fulfill the need of altcoins. I think at least holding Ethereum is also necessary, for no. of reasons, Ethereum have it's own blockchain. Ethereum is the most sophisticated cryptocurrency, highly demanded and many ICOs using Ethereum blockchain to launch altcoins. I think Ethereum should be included in every portfolio.
I deal only with altcoins so I completely disagree with you. Bitcoin is not popular among small traders who are the basis of the whole market.
But BTC is the flagship of the crypto armada. If BTC sinks, the whole armada suffers.
We need altcoins because we need diversity, better tech solutions, alternate blockchain applications, improved consensus mechanisms, etc.

The more good altcoins exist the better for us because there will be a competition for claiming to be the best of all. Of course we do. There are so many instances where one altcoin maybe beneficial than the other relative to its prices. Price somehow matters. On the other hand think about altcoins as stores. Now everybody just lined up to buy something and the store is just too busy to transact business with you. Do you really need to wait or go to another store? What I mean to say here is that altcoins provide better options when the most valuable coin for you is too expensive to buy or the network is busy as in the analogy. If you need to have faster transactions, can altcoin provide it? Yes of course definitely when these coins do not have more customers online to transact certainly you've got the whole road as passageway. So for it this the reason why need altcoins as options.

Each altcoyin is a separate project. Some projects benefit users. And some projects are absolutely useless for people. Therefore, the answer to your question will be: altcoins are needed, but not all.

Of course yes. Many of these altcoins have different features and many of them are even better than most of those bitcoin forks if not all. Anonymity like Monero and Komodo while other coins like Litecoin are actually faster than Bitcoin itself.
yes of course every altcoins has its own uses and functoins as we call it, some are for payments and some are for lending purposes, as we see its all up to us where is the more convinient alts that we use its not for investment only but we can also use altcoins in different ways. indeed we need these coins.
