The only person responsible to both winnings and losses, is only oneself unless an instance like a friend of yours gambled your money without your permission. This is also evident to those people who copies other people's bet wherein if the outcome is negative, they tend to indirectly blame other people. For sure we are all aware of the risk involved in gambling; losing is more often the outcome unless you are that lucky to be on the other way around. Nothing is certain in gambling which is also why risk management is need in particular with the amount you are betting in order to avoid regret afterwards or blaming other people.

The mother and son should be happy that it is a bailable offense and it fine is cheap. I don't see this as a problem to them compare to the money that they squandered. They are chasing their loses by allowing their emotions to control them.
Blaming someone else for the consequences of your action is bad. Only an addicted gambler will frame up such stories for them to cover up their gambling addiction. The mom and her son need rehabilitation from gambling so that they don't bring frustration to themselves at the end of the day.

How can two persons be so addicted to gambling that they'll go to such an extent? Apparently the mother is definitely not a good role model to the son. The son definitely needs a strong father figure which is what he lacks. I don't like the punishment or fine give to them. It is not going to be in anyway effective. Their punishment could have been rehabilitation and community service.
Maybe, they have an internal problems at their home. And they thought that through gambling they can solve their problem and it will an answer to their other issues. But it happen that they become addicted and that's not good because not only the mother is addict it is also become her son. Their family went to a lot of course and they needed counseling as well.Good point, if both will manage to survive and recover from gambling addiction, they can use this experience to influence other people to stay away from this kind of activities, their experienced can bring awareness to how gambling addiction can ruin a life. Without control, addiction can lead anyone to risk a lot, and with how they overspent their money, blowing out huge amount is not a hard task since they are already addicted to gambling and they are already out of control with their engagements with gambling.

One of the worst problems with addicts of any kind is that they've lost control of the situation and are often willing to stoop quite low in order to fulfill their perceived need. It's very hard to break the habit when you're so deep and some people will keep digging a hole instead of working out how to climb out. At a certain point it is just harming yourself but when it starts to hurt others around you or needing crime to fund it, then you will have to suffer the increased consequences.
Gambling because of myself so no one is to blame, any loss in gambling I will not bring that resentment to anyone family or relatives, after all there is no benefit for me doing that blaming someone just because of my loss let alone accusing someone and suing someone for my loss , gambling must know the risks, if you don't want to be without risk, then you should not gamble or look for other games without risks, for example playing children's games. lol

There was a time I let a friend bet for me because I have no idea how the game works. It lost for quite an amount but I told him it was okay and we just used the remaining money to drink beers instead of losing more. We just had fun talking about it and him teaching me how the game works.
I will never blame someone for the gambling defeat that I experienced because blaming someone also will not return the losses that I have experienced and it is better to make the defeat an experience and a lesson so that in the future I can be more careful and avoid bad losses.

I think they're just trying to save themselves from huge losses but what they did have brought them into a worse situation. The truth will always prevail no matter how we cover up our mistakes. Blaming someone else isn't a good idea and it couldn't even save us from our huge losses. We are only dragging ourselves to bad situations more. It will be better to control ourselves or just accept losses in case we lose our funds since that's a part of gambling. We can't blame others if we are the ones who are making wrong decisions.
They are very lucky that they can pay a fine if 150000 naira each.

I wonder why such a lenient punishment? In fact, this is a financial fraud and in most countries such tricks are subject to criminal penalties. It seems to me that the punishment is incomparable with the amount that they could "win" if they had not been caught. For me it is illogical and I think that it encourages scammers instead of punish them.
I didn't understand one thing: did they make up this whole story due to gambling being illegal in Nigeria, therefore they couldn't been spotted as gamblers by authorities, or did they do this simply because they wanted to retrieve the lost money?

However, if it falls under the second case, I blame them, because they were acting maliciously to retrieve a money they didn't have any right over it anymore, since they voluntarily played a game of luck and lost it.

yes, they should have thought about that, there are many ways they can withdraw money from their betting accounts, without having to get ahead of their emotions. if they think that the money has other people's rights and their rights, of course it's safer. 
They probably thought it was like a console game where there is a save point and load point to reset the game and do it again. Blame it to others and maybe we will have a chance to go back and gamble. They are lucky the fine was lower than the spent amount which leaves me in a curious mind.

This is expected when you tried a compulsive gambler they will create twisted stories, it goes with the character, compulsive gamblers are liars when you tried them in court, but this is a court they will eventually convict because the prosecutors can easily find evidence based on the story,
This is a very sad story we don't want any of our family to be deprived of liberty now we have mother and son spending time in jail.

Compulsive gamblers are like that they will deny wrongdoing they will deny that they are hooked on gambling and they will deny that they gambling too much, they are pathological liars and we have a saying here in our country that thieves and liars are relatives, you can easily tell a compulsive gambler to a responsible one, they cannot stand to what is right and very prone to lie, so this is what happens to the mother and her son.
Seems like they have done this before and it’s only today that they were luckily caught. It only proves that no matter how smart you are, rules will always be rules, and you can’t get rid of it so you can free yourself and continue gambling. Though it’s safe to gamble as long as you are using your own funds, but in this case, the mother and son have really set their plan but unfortunately, they fail to succeed this time. And even if they can fined theirselves and become free again, I believe these two gamblers will never get rid of gambling.

They started slowly with not being able to control themselves with gambling away small amounts till it finished, it is why as they were exposed to such a large amount they became unable to control themselves. If you can question this people and ask them how they gambled aways that kind of money without realising it or stopping themselves, they will say they did not know when. This is the height of addiction.
As individuals we should be careful entrusting money to people who we know have a gambling problem.
