I think you'll need to be more specific than "does not work".

Also: why don't you just fix it yourself? Are you a paying customer?

cleared the cache? What cache? Sounds like you're using a browser-based wallet, which electrum isn't.

Which OS are you on? If you are on Linux/OS X you can start using -v and you should get output on what you are waiting on. Do you have more then a handful of transactions?

Excuse the intrusion, but why on earth would you recommend coinbase? Users should be in sole possession of their keys. Reddit is full of reports about coinbase holding BTC hostage due to overblown kyc/aml shit.

It seems coinbase is the new PayPal. Don't recommend it!

"I think I should test my wallet by typing my seed into a friends computer to see if it works"

At this point, I would think that no amount of explanation could save this person's ability to secure his bitcoins.

At least with Coinbase, they protect your bitcoins in a similar fashion to a bank, so most people are used to that.

Hi guys Smiley

First off I'd like to thank dabura667 for his advice.  It worked.

My life had been in turmoil for about a year and is just now calming down.  It was during the turmoil that I originally set up my second wallet hence me incorrectly copying my password.  It took me 2 weeks to even find my seed and incorrect password Embarrassed

My friend already had access to my seed and password for my first wallet in a secure location.  I would trust them with my life.  I wanted to use my friends computer so as not to lose any part of the existing electrum info that was on my comp by reinstalling electrum.

Was the concern about my friend or their computer?

From dabura667's original responses I could imagine his exasperation to my questions Kiss

Point taken. Still opposed to recommending coinbase or similar, though.

Why not recommend to get a trezor? Makes security easy.

I want to, just two problems:

1. $119 is kinda steep for someone just getting into Bitcoins. I'd rather recommend something like Coinbase or Circle than sound like I'm pushing a product.

2. I have yet to see a Trezor in action, nor do I have the funds to purchase one myself. If I were to recommend something, I would like at least a rudimentary understanding of how to perform each action with the device, but there seems to be a lack of videos on Youtube that show every single feature... so until I can fiddle with one, or someone puts a detailed walkthrough on Youtube etc. I feel like I'm not qualified to recommend it. (It would be like recommending a friend of a friend... and that kind of irks me.)

Again, I completely agree with the Coinbase sentiment, but I use them to purchase coins and so does my mother too. (She, on the other hand, has decided to keep them on Coinbase because she's afraid of tech things... yet she wanted bitcoins.) I just send them to my offline Electrum as soon as they post.

I will definitely pick up a Trezor eventually... but for now... just saving up.

Thank you for your response.

I am trying to restore an existing wallet whose password was written down incorrectly and whose seed I hope is written down correctly.  How does choosing a new name restore a wallet of a different name?

I suppose I could delete Electrum and and reinstall it in order to change the password on the wallet in question.  I imagined it could be done without deleting and reinstalling.

I have never used a word processor, I don't even have one on my new computer. Embarrassed  Kinda makes it difficult to read the occasional word document sent to me.

An idea I just had is to install Electrum on somebody else's computer to make sure the seed is correct before I delete it from my computer or even try to restore it.

1. your seed has nothing to do with the name of the wallet or your password. As long as the seed is correct, you can name the file whatever and you can make the password whatever and the seed will always create the same addresses.

2. You can only change the password on a wallet by inputting the password and then setting a new password. So the only way you can retrieve your wallet is to make a new file (the name doesn't matter) and restore from your seed.

3. Don't put your seed into someone else's computer. Your bitcoins will be stolen.

4. I recommend you use Coinbase.

If want to check your seed, just click "New/restore" type in a random name. Any name is fine. Click Save. Then when it asks, click restore from seed, then type in your seed. If your seed is correct, you should see your addresses appear in the newly created wallet.

I have just downloaded electrum portable but before sending any coins I have a question.
What will happen if our coins are sent to the wallet and after a year the developer of electrum decides to stop supporting it and then wallet stops working. How can we send the coins lets say to another wallet like wallet QT ?

You can dump the private keys and import them into bitcoin core/qt or any other wallet software.

thanks!

File>New/Restore  select wallet from list and then select "Save".  Is that correct, and if so what happens next?

NONONONONONONO THIS WILL OVERWRITE THE WALLET FILE!

File>New/Restore, then TYPE IN A NEW NAME THAT IS NOT THE SAME AS ANY ONE IN THE LIST.

This is like the "Save As..." feature of any word processor. If you choose the same name as an existing file, it will DELETE the old file, and REPLACE it with the new wallet you create/restore.

Thank you for your response.
