I contacted admin and a global mod and was given the all-clear to post this.

As most of you are now aware, giveaway threads are now banned on bitcointalk.org - More information on this here.

If you wish to create giveaway threads, you can create them on a forum I have set up:

Website - cryptorun.com
Giveaway section - HERE

You can then link to that thread in the official announcement thread on here for that coin, but please do not spam such link. A temporary link added to the main announcement post would do just fine. Do not create a new giveaway thread with a link though, that is still not allowed and defeats the whole purpose.

Hopefully this is some sort of compromise to meet the demand of giveaways for alternative cryptocurrencies on this website. So to confirm, you can still host a giveaway and post it here (in the announcement thread), it's just that the post has to be a link that will take you off-site.

I for one am glad. The altcoin forum page is so much clearer now. You can have proper discussions now without having to dig out relevant threads.

Didn't even know what Dogecoin was until a month later because of all the giveaway threads.

Thanks Admin!!!!

This is one is allowed? https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/platinum-giveaway-441452 or why is it there....

Don't complain if you aren't reporting them, we can't watch it 24/7. Luckily others did.

I think this will help the better alt coins, I for one was shameless when I posted to spam threads, I even joked about having rented my user name out for the sake of a coin, never did do it though, I piled up some coins and did a giveaway to gain interest and although the coin was a joke coin my giveaway helped to draw some attention, the giveaway's just get out of control.
I will say alt coins have been a doorway for me to BTC, even some of the free ones I received through giveaway's, and I still think this is a good move, I dont like seeing a developer premining with a giveaway plan and then sitting on thousands or millions of coins with a huge group of people pushing for the coin to gain value, that promotes scam's in my opinion.

How many altcoins are there out there now?

I had counted around 600 until I gave up about two weeks ago. The number may be slightly skewed, as I was just counting names that I hadn't heard before, and didn't investigate further to find out if some of the coins were jokes and never actually released.

My guess would be between 500 and 700 actually exist or have existed.

It's time people move on to cryptocointalk.com and soon lower the traffic of bitcointalk and offload it to cryptocointalk.

Little late there chief, there's already like 4 giveaway forums.

That's ok, Facebook didn't care that there was MySpace before them when they set out to redefine social networks. But thanks for pointing it out Smiley
