Brainwallet is now Closed Permanently[1,2] and thus there is currently no way to verify a signed message with having a client or using a service that requires a login. At least to my knowledge. If you know about a site that is able to verify signatures please let me know. For more about why the site is down see these[3] defcon slides or wait for the speech to be available as video. The tl;dr is: brainwallets are bad if done wrong and most do it wrong. My assumption currently is that this is the reason the site is down, which sadly also takes down the features that can be used without risk.

As Im currently not at home it will take some time till more verify guides are available.

Awesome, will add it ASAP.

Yeah! It uses jackjack's signing/verifying tool - jasvet.

http://coinig.com/. seems to work well, you just need to enter the info in 3 fields rather than in a block with headers.

You can do the same in Brainwallet.org too!

I see that you are using online wallet. If you want to have your address sign using an online wallet , you can try Blockchain (as stated in first page) or Coinbase (I recommend this).

IIRC, Xapo does not allow you to sign messages.

OK I have given up trying to sign a message with Ledger Wallet, and have opened a Coinbase account.

Here is an attempt at a signed message, could someone confirm I have done it correctly?

Code:
-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
This is RichBC from bitcointalk.org. Today is 6th August 2015 This account is Mine, all Mine.
-----BEGIN SIGNATURE-----

-----END BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Thanks

Rich

Thanks for the links, after some more searching it seems that using Electrum with the Ledger Wallet is far from straightforward, so much so that I will look for alternatives.  Smiley

Hi shorena

Thanks for the link, have read it but makes no sense to me... The front end that I use just allows sending & receiving BTC, will take a look to see if there is a different front end that allows signing? Keen to get it sorted now before I actually need it.

Rich

According the the wiki[1] it should work with electrum2[2]. When I launch electrum 2.3.2 and try to create a HW wallet I only see "BTChip wallet" and "Trezor wallet" though. You could ask in the electrum section[3] about this or just try both versions and see whether one works. Electrum is at 2.4 now, so might be because of my outdated version.

This is very useful, thankyou. When I recently got started after much research I decided to go for a hardware Ledger Wallet. Unless I am missing something I cannot see how to sign a message using this? Can someone confirm this and if so am I best to get another conventional Bitcoin address just so that I can sign messages?

Thanks Rich

I dont own one of those so I cant test it, but the hardware is able to sign a short message[1]. Depending on the front end you use it might however not display this.

You could however create a wallet just for signing. Electrum in the stand alone version on an dedicated USB stick would probably the closest thing to a hardware wallet even though it does not offer the same level of security for your private keys as a proper HW waller would.
