I prefer free arena. I am more worried about investing (2018) because there are too many scam projects or have very cheap prices when entering the market. I do not want to lose a lot of money and I will only buy cheap prices on the market.
I would choose Investment because you can make a lot of money by investing in promising projects. Free money is not a huge money.

I think that there are projects that do not need ICO and they are quite successful, but most of the projects can not be implemented without ICO.

I think it's better if you can do both things at once, but if you still don't have the capital to invest, you can follow the bounty and airdrop first to get investment capital

ICOs have a great option to recover the money in the short term. If you lose all the money in the altcoins and the bounty. But ICOs investment has been careful. Because at this moment the most ICOs are the scams. So I recommend if you invest in the ICOs. So first watch out the scams then to invest. 
Investment or free depends on each person and the capital they have. Who doesn’t like free things? Well they are both going to last. It all depends on those that are running that project, if they do the right thing and do what they are supposed to do they will able to attract investors who would invest that project and also attract those who are ready to spare their time and work on promoting that project. So they are both going to last and that’s how it’s been for long and its still that way till today.
