<…> Some one just merited his farm of alt accounts Cheesy Or this was just a April Fools day fun, when people paid merit for forum accessories Cheesy
The implied weeks to compare are week 13 vs week 12, where the 19,43% increase is equivalent to 886 Merits:

-       Bitcoin decreased 265 merits.
-       Alternate Cryptocurrencies got 235 extra merits (188 in the Altcoin Discussion board)
-       Economy got an extra 139 merits (Marketplace rose 274 merits and Trading Discussion went down 171 merits).
-       Local boards went up 347 merits (German local board rose 203, Indonesian 137 and Russian 109, etc.).
-      Others rose 488 merits (118 extra in B&H and 285 on Meta). Meta is really only behind 1/3 of the weekly increase.

That day is the day of changes, on January 24, 2018, 11:00:11 PM
More than one year ago, and changes actually shown.
I like this change a lot. Hopefully we'll see an increase in post quality.
Post quality changed, higher than before merit system come to the forum, but I would like to pinpoint another significant change due to effects from the system.
This is the change in some indicators:
- Total new registered accounts fell dramatically.
- Total post count made each month dropped considerably.
- More and more accounts got permanent bans, or nuked.
Are you just noticing this now, if so you're late to the party, it's no longer a hope, we're already seeing huge change in post quality both by pretenders and quality posters.

Hello guys,

we started a new currency and our official account could need 1 merrit to be able to post pics soon. Maybe somebody here will be kind enough to support  Smiley
Begging is usually not seen with good eyes here.

You can always buy the Copper Member upgrade to enable images. I guess if your project is serious, you won’t mind soending a few bucks on it, right?

Instead of begging for merits, you should spend small amount of BTC or Grin coin to buy a Copper Membership.
There is link for you to get more details:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=credit;promote

Even someone send you 1 sMerit, you will have to wait to get enough 30 activity count to be able to post images.
It will take you around 1.5 months to get the Junior Member rank in case you post at least 30 posts during 1.5 months.

What a huge increment this week, +19%
do we got
new merit sources
more smerit for source
or more active sources?
(or more sellers or others random active users) <…>
The “where” of the incremented merit distribution can be seen here:

As we can see above, for the last 2 complete weeks (weeks 9 and 10), the 19,25% (858) sMerit increment vs previous week comes from:

-   Bitcoin boards shot-up from 538 sMerits to 1.008 sMerits (specifically, Development & Technical Discussion rose from 184 to 419).

-   Economy deceased overall from 1425 to 1272 sMerits.

-   Others rose from 909 to 1256 sMerits, with more concentration on Beginners and Help (141->271), Meta (636-> 804) and Politics & Society (44-> 131 sMerits).

Now if we look at specific threads we see threads such as (between 04/03/2019 and 10/03/2019):
[-1 Merit source in RU local] Alex_Sr merit source application UP! -> 100 sMerits
[Polish section] Merit source application  -> 77 sMerits

Confidential Transactions, Content privacy for Bitcoin transactions -> 39 sMerits
The Lightning Network FAQ -> 38 sMerits
Breaking Mixing Services -> 31 sMerits (has received many more this partial week).

There are 23 threads in the Development & Technical Discussion board between the 04/03/2019 and 10/03/2019 that have received at least 5 sMerits. A complete relation can be seen by going to the Merit Dashboard, selecting the “Rankings” Tab near the end, delimiting the date slider to 04/03/2019 00:00:00 and 10/03/2019 23:59:59 and setting the subsection to “Development & Technical Discussion”.

Aside from that, Merit Sources and allocation seems to be the same as previous weeks. On the other hand, the last big Merit Sources reallocation too place on the 5th of January 2019 if I recall correctly. That would mean that around the 5th of each month (roughly), many Merit Source allowances start to be replenished, therefore having more available system wide (nevertheless, that effect did not occur a month ago …).

Required period to get activity points
The activity number is determined in this way:
time = number of two-week periods in which you've posted since your registration
activity = min(time * 14, posts)
Besides activity points, for ranks from Junior Member and above, you will need another point, merit points.
There is a topic on Merit $ new rank requirements
In short:
RankRequired activityRequired merit

Let's take my case as an example.
With old rank requirements, I could reach the Senior Member rank after 8.5 months, if I made enough posts for each 14-day period, and satisfied postcount of Senior Member rank.
Unfortunately, with the new rank requirements, it has actually taken me around one year and a half (double the minimum time required with old rank requirements) to hit the finish line.
Eventually, I hit the line yesterday.
Keep learning, and grow up, noob.

I gave you some important topics.
1) [GUIDES] on Bitcointalk. Index thread (until there is a dedicated subforum?) (Very important topic, in which you can find almost everything you need)
2) Inspirational stories from self-made promoted users (Read, and learn from those stories)

Hi bantano,

Whichever ANN you want to make, or posts you want to attach images inside, please remember that you should never over use images.
And if you attach images inside your posts, please remember to use those options:
width and, or height to adjust images to appropriate size in order to avoid over large images, that obviously bring annoying feelings to readers.
[...]
After the activation of merit system more than one years ago, 30 activity count does  not help you to display images, because you need to get at least 1 merit to become Junior member, that have rights to display images.

Hi,
thanks to you and the others for your help. Regarding not overusing images and scaling them properly I couldn't agree more. I'll make sure this will be done properly.

Regarding the 1 merit I'll need and the alternative to pay the fee, I've heard from it but dislike the idea to pay for the option to post here. There's no urgency and maybe eventually someone will be super nice and give me the merit. We've now waited for about a year since the project started, and having the ANN post is rather one thing on my list I always wanted to get done than an essential, urgent issue.

So I'll just hang around here from time to time, maybe better anyway to wait for a little better sentiment before going ahead and posting the ANN anyway.

Thanks again, and keep up the good work guys Wink

Cheers,
bantano

How about if the post merited is deleted? Will the merit count? Or erased too? Because somebody could just use merit for unreasonable purpose.

The merit is not undone if the post is deleted.

Does that mean all merit sources are hand selected?

Right. There are about 35 right now.

Hi theymos,

Could you consider posting a guide to how the Merit system works and the proper use of it in the HELP section along with a few informative links.

width=200 or 300 is enough to display images, if those images don't contains words/ contents inside.
width=200 is a decently small and non-intrusive style to make various points.  Like this one:
Adjusted your image with width=100. For the emotional icon, I though width=100 is a decent size.  Tongue

Or width=50, it should be smaller than your avatar.  Tongue

Exactamente!!!  These kinds of image sizes are discretionary choices, and of course, like you mentioned, if there are details within the image, such as text, that you want to be more easily visible, then you may need to make your image(s) larger, and perhaps if you are requoting another poster's image, you could either completely eliminate the image or make it very small, depending on how much of a topic that image might be in your subsequent discussion.

These points are important, not because there is any exact objective standard, but instead, in the context of merit, if you want to earn merit (which is the subject matter of this thread), then you have much better chances if you are attempting to engage with the subject matter, and connecting with some readers of your post that may be willing and able to send you merit.

To your point, thd26bct, if readers find the member annoying because s/he post images that are not substantively relevant to the thread or the current discussion points or the wrong size or even off topic, then the member might neither earn merit(s), but some members might begin to conclude that such member is a non-contributing shit poster.

Hi bantano,

Whichever ANN you want to make, or posts you want to attach images inside, please remember that you should never over use images.
And if you attach images inside your posts, please remember to use those options:
width and, or height to adjust images to appropriate size in order to avoid over large images, that obviously bring annoying feelings to readers.
For example:
Code:
[img width=x height=y]hyperlink to image[/img]
using x for desired width of your image, whilst using y for height of your image.
And you can use boths options (width, height) or only one of them.

I like to use images to make substantive points.  When I was a newbie, I did not know how to post images, probably for a year or more of my forum membership.

In the past couple of years, on average, I probably post an image in one in  every 10 posts, and width=200 is a decently small and non-intrusive style to make various points.  Like this one:
