This "Avalanche Consensus" is not fundamentally novel! It is inherently the same concept with NKN.ORG 's majority voting cellular automata (MVCA) consensus. The reason why I claimed that was we verified the concept both proof in math and simulations last year, we finalized the whitepaper in Feb 2018, and now we have released the minimum viable prototype (MVP) of NKN blockchain already (released on 6/16/2018, NEO London Meetup).

Kennt jemand NKN?

Episode 23
September 19, 2018 — 90 mins
Guests: Emin Gün Sirer

Revolutionary! On this episode we have the brilliant Dr. Gün Sirer to whet our appetites for Avalanche, a new category of consensus protocol. He distinguishes Avalanche from Paxos/RAFT systems, blockchain, and traditional gossip networks to show how this new algorithm prevents double spends while allowing for high throughput (early tests supporting over 1200 tx/s). We learn about his new coin, Ava, which will test the limits of Avalanche’s public consensus on a global scale! The future is exciting!

PoW, PoS and DAGs are NOT consensus protocols
The much hyped concepts of Proof-Of-Work, Proof-of-Stake and Directed Acyclic Graphs are often mistakenly advertised as “consensus protocols”. Neither of them are, but rather address the key challenges of a robust blockchain design: Sybil resistance and asynchronicity.

Avalanche

Avalanche comes in and combines the best of both world’s, in particular,

Quick finality and low latency: That is, it takes around 2 seconds to achieve finality across the globe. This basically means that after 2 seconds, you can get your payment processed and verified.
Higher throughput: 1000–10,000 transactions per second.
Robust: The network does not need to agree on who the participants are to achieve undeniable consensus.
Quiescent protocol: Most importantly, the protocol is green. That means that it is sustainable, it does not waste any energy, and that there is no special ecosystem of miners with their own separate interests from the users.

In this article, we will simplify and visualize the protocol for you, leaving you with an understanding of this new approach.

Ferner werden erklärt:
metastability
Protokoll anmerkungen
Efficient scalabil
Byzantine tolerance
Egalitarian ecosystem
No liveness guarantee for conflicting transactions

The Avalanche Token: AVA
Sybil deterrence via staking
Economic governance via voting

Conclusion

People often talk about the consensus protocol used in Bitcoin as if it was a pure decentralized approach that determines the opinions of all network participants equally. Unfortunately it is not, in Bitcoin the decisions are mostly made by the miners.

In contrast, Avalanche separates the consensus problem from the governance problem. Each one is tackled modularly and independently. Consensus is achieved via a smart combination of gossip protocols with recurrent subsampling. While, fair governance is achieved via sampling and staking resulting in a direct tie between users and their decisions.

Hi everyone, Humbled and thrilled by the attention Avalanche is getting. Our unofficial telegram group went from 25 enthusiasts to, literally, over 9000 overnight. I'm going to be doing a development binge. Please bear with me as I ignore everyone for a short while.

Very promising new consensus algorithm. Maybe it will take some time until we see an implementation.
Thank you For your Feedback! Maybe you would like to drop a Post if there are any news. I am very exited and interessted about and in this.
I‘ll try to do my best. No easy to keep updated in crypto space.

Snowball augments Snowflake with confidence counters that capture the number of queries that have yielded a threshold result for their corresponding color (Figure 3).
A node decides a color if, during a certain number of consecutive queries, its con-fidence for that color exceeds that of other colors. The differences between Snow-flake
and Snowball are as follows:
1. Upon every successful query, the node increments its
confidence counter for that color.
2. A node switches colors when the confidence in its
current color becomes lower than the confidence value of
the new color.

Quote
The DAG has a single sink that is the genesis vertex.
Quote
Maintaining a DAG provides two significant benefits. First, it improves effi-ciency, because a single vote on a DAG vertex implicitly votes for all transactions on the path to the genesis vertex.
Second, it also improves security, because the DAG intertwines the fate of transac-tions, similar to the Bitcoin blockchain. This renders past decisions difficult to undo without the approval of correct nodes.
