It's good to do some good research before diving into cryptoworld, especially in altcoins, since they are quite unpredictable, too many scams around. As you learn more about altcoins you will notice that not all ICO's are legit so check team and whitepaper.

Developing your account and research in different ICO's, you need to differentiate the ones that are legit to the ones that are scams, feel free to ask around, check forums also.
If you spot an ICO that you like, do your research and check the website if the ICO developers have one, and then check who the team is behind the ICO.

You are a newbie to this forum and you are also likely to be new the whole segment of crypto, but once you start reading threads here you'll be understanding everything all the more clearly. Nobody can give you some particular and particularly effective advice on the best or a good strategy here or there at least because we don't know even the term you are or would like to focus on, how much funds you currently have and so on. Start reading the forum, asking specific questions to grasp the point of what's going on, follow news and analysis on crypto and related media and you'll be fine with getting an always better understanding of everything, gradually. It all depends.

Altcoins too similar to bitcoin in one or the other way. Bitcoin has got a much increased value compared to the altcoins. Being a newbie to the altcoins is not a big thing. When you have known about bitcoin, learning all about altcoin is simple and the same makes people experiment the benefits associated with it.

I think in altcoin world the pattern can be studied, as well as stocks if the price goes up then if sold gain a lot, but if the price is down then hold it while waiting for the price to go up. while still possible then collect altcoin as much as possible.

what do you want to do? do you want to trade or invest in altcoins. If you want to invest should see the potential and popularity of your altcoins first. whether the altcoins you hold have the potential to rise in the long run.

All I can say is to stay away from ICO or pre-ICO because even if you bought it in a lower price compared to their actual price that they claim and you thought you that's a wise decision then you are wrong. They are going to fall first once they hit exchange sites.

I would say do as much research as you can on altcoins and ICOs. Many people on this forum are very helpful so don't be afraid to ask questions. People will generally give opinionated answers but it is good to see many opinions and form a decision m]based on them and research.

My advice is Research, Read, before you invest in Altcoin.
I have read a few whitepapers and research upcoming ICOs and there is one who really caught my attention. Most of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies have nothing behind them but Propthereum.io are an asset back cryptocurrency with potentially great coin appreciation. Definitely one you should check out for!
