@vishnu.reang it was termed as an investigation but I don’t think it has damaged Sangakkara credentials, and if he qualifies to succeed Mr. Shashank Manohar, then he should file his nomination without bothering about this investigation, as every one knows that it was a false accusation and further the police too has given him the clean chit.

No doubt about that. Sangakkara is one of the gentlemen players among the cricket legends, much like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. No one can question his integrity, or his loyalty to the game. But this entire episode would have left him depressed and frustrated. And he may decide to stay out of any active competition or election for now. I have said this earlier... but would repeat once more. Sangakkara is a hundred times more suitable to succeed Shashank Manohar, when compared to any of the other candidates out there.

Sri Lanka police call-off 2011 World Cup final match-fixing probe over lack of evidence
Quote
The Sri Lankan police on Friday (July 3) dropped the match-fixing investigation regarding the 2011 World Cup final after they failed to find any concrete evidence of Sri Lankan players letting India win as per latest reports.
Former skipper Kumar Sangakkara, ex-chief selector Aravinda de Silva and a couple of others were interrogated this week over suspicions that have dogged the match for years.
"We are satisfied with their explanation," a top police official told AFP.
"The inquiry is now closed." "They had reasonable explanations about the changes that were made to the final squad," the officer added.
"We found no evidence of any wrongdoing."
This sudden action is really wired now I am feeling this Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage was looking for media coverage so just because of this all he done this all and now they feel its going to be more drama then they was expected so they closed this all and now all in limbo very strange works happening.

I don't think it so. we all know that there are a lot of gambler who like to gamble on cricket. and they interfere in the match, sometimes match fixing is occurred, they make the game like their will. A few days ago, ICC said that most of the match- fixer are related to India. so, it can be said that Match-fixing in the 2011 world cup is not something impossible. so, I think that there is need to more investigation about the 2011 World cup.
This all is ok but if someone have proof's then surely he need to submitt ICC Anti Corruption unit then we can have some better results and all informations about this right now its nothing just a joke as Election is around in Sri Lanka and this political leader wants something from this and if you are feeling India is most involved in cricket related gambling then no one can do any thing as ICC is all under control of them and they have power to change many things for their own sack its already shut up and do your own business call for them.

If someone had any proof then they would have submitted to the ICC long back. They do not and that is the reason they have dropped the investigation in just two days. I guess they do not want to accept till date that India played better on that day.

When the srilankan's did not have valid proof why they insisted on a investigation. I do not understand what were the motive behind all these allegations. This was just a wastage of time and it brought more bad name to the srilanka cricket.

In my opinion, it was to gain some political mileage and gain some popularity with the Srilankan population that is why the current sports minister raised this issue. Unfortunately, it backfired and he had to drop the investigation. This was suppose to happen as it is not possible to gather evidence related to the match which is 9 year old.

If you are viewing in that angle then you need to scrutinize every sport, cricket does have a really tough anti corruption unit and any player who involve in those activities will get an instant life ban and recently Shakib Al Hasan got a ban for not disclosing to the authorities for not informing about an approach by the bookies and not for actually taking money from them and with the amount of money they can make as a career and i do not think they will involve in such activities atleast the top players.

As Mahela mentioned it is plain simple politics and I am sure nothing further will happen. This investigation will only tarnish the reputation of legendary players. These how you get the attention of the whole nation only for your political ambition.

I would disagree with the second sentence. It is not the investigation, but unsubstantiated rumors which are going to tarnish the reputation of the players. An investigation, if conducted properly can undo any damage which was brought as a result of these rumors. And this is what happened now. The police department has clarified that there is no evidence to substantiate any of the wild allegations.

That said, I am afraid that the damage is already done. Kumar Sangakkara was being talked about as one of the potential candidates to replace Shashank Manohar. But now, I don't think that he'll jump in to the fray.
Was there any play-incident you people could recall about possible fixing on India-SirLanka 2011 final match? I remember India lost Sehwag earlier and then Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli but Dohni and Yuvaraj fought well to reach the target along with Gambhir's lion haearted 90+ score. In SriLanka innings Jayawardene hit century (the only century of that final match) as India's bowling was not that good like how they are doing right now, still managed to control SriLanka under 280 runs which must be a good score for a final match and its pressure building situation point of view.

India really struggled with earlier wickets to reach the target which made me to assume there cannot be any chances for match-fixing involved. Did BCCI reacted about this incident so far? I read only SLC directed for investigation whereas it is all about 2 nation's players possible involvement. Any deadline for the outcome of SLC's investigation; I am just curious to know what would be the final verdict.

^^ Holy cow!! read some reports that they interrogated players for around 5-10 hours or something..

If there is some truth in all allegation then former sport minister should follow Sanga advice and approach the ICC anti corruption unit, call out all names or stop bitching around..

@pakhittheboss I can’t believe it that these legendary player’s were interrogated by the police, and I’m hoping that they will file a defamation case against the minister for trying to tarnish their image.

@JSRAW this is not surprising because there was no evidence in the first place, and the police should not have interrogated these player’s as this was a baseless accusation.

I heard that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) staged a protest to support the players. It is just ridiculous. Yesterday, two of the legendary players were interrogated (Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene). These players are widely respected even outside Sri Lanka. Tarnishing their reputation, and that too based on some wild allegation is tragic, to say the least.

And as expected, the politicians are picking sides. Sajith Premadasa just tweeted against the SLC. I would just request these politicians not to make scapegoats out of cricket players, just for their own political benefit.

Accusation directly pointing fingers at Sri lankan's selection committee or indirectly senior players like Murlitharan, Jayawardene, Malinga, Dilshan and more importantly Captaincy of Sangakkara, not Indian team.

Grab a popcorn and let's see what happens.
The media will run with it as if something serious have taken place even though they clearly knows that there is nothing to point fingers at these players nor the ICC anti corruption unit is investigating the claims made by the politician to get some mileage. What will happen now is the media will drag many names and they will have a talking point for a week and then move on to other subjects.
Now this is real serious matter in Sri Lanka as today I was watching news channel they have few live reports police call 2011 Chief Selector Arvinda DeSilva and investigated for 6 hours then they call Upal Tharanga and investigated for nearly 2 hours next call is for Jai Wardanai and Kumar Sangakara many other players and local authorties calling this is rediculas but now police in action and they will bring someone as main suspect and end this all in next few days.

I cannot believe that these idiots would blame such legends who retired now. This is absolute stupidity.

The Sri Lankan government should have focused on developing the current team and helping them improve instead of playing these useless gimmicks. On top of all this, they chose this point when the world is reeling from COVID. Absolute stupidity indeed.

Sri Lanka starting a investigation on "Sold the World Cup" allegation raised by former sport minister. Legendary batsman Aravinda de Silva is called up by the authorities and he's is meeting them today, he was chief selector back then.
This is hilarious. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh sports ministers usually cry over losses based on what I have observed, but I never expected the Sri Lankan to launch an investigation into this after almost a decade as I mentioned in one of my previous posts.

Why are you concerned about those journalist in a thread where we discuss about cricket. Whatever it is I would request the moderator to only allow queries related to cricket  and delete those post which are not, please also remove/ ban those who are not talking about cricket.
You are not talking about cricket either here in this thread yet complaining about banning who are not talking about it Roll Eyes.

What exactly led to this discussion I am least bothered. But, we are not discussing anything else but cricket here. If we are unable to do so then we should remove members who divert from topic.
If you accuse something you need to understand what is going on rather than throwing around naive rhetorics.
Since there is not much going around cricket and i think it started regarding the investigation around the accusation in SL.

Lets not bring the drama which is going around in the forum in sports and gambling section. If you think something is inappropriate and needs to be deleted feel free to report those contents.
