Interesting question. If you recall all the sports in which I know successful players from India, then I can name chess only. Apparently this is due to the fact that chess is the cheapest kind of sport and historically India was a poor country. I think after some time, when the standard of living in India rises, we will see many different successful athletes from there.

Indians dominated field hockey for so long, before in the 1970s the European nations caught up with them. Apart from that, Indians have fared poorly in Olympic sports because of two factors - firstly, India is a cricket crazy nation with hardly any attention given to other sports. And secondly, genetically Indians are not suitable for athletics and other sports. If you check the medals won by India, it can be seen that most of them comes from sparsely populated states in the Northeast and Northwest. States which contribute to more than 50% of the population (such as UP and Bihar) hardly contributes anything to the medal tally.

The pandemic hit everyone, there is not excuse for a country to use this because every participant had to deal with similar issues. Either way China has always had a strong position on the Olympics and it proves a great competitor for the US. Let's see how it plays out but I have the feeling China will outperfrom this time
Well, China got 34 gold already and with a total of 74 medals, combined all of the silver and bronze. I guess they'll be nailing to be the top at this year's Olympics the even the US is close to the number of having gold but they've got most of the medals in combination.
But it's just all about having gold, China really is leading, the end is near so I guess if the US gets more gold, China would be getting the same too in addition. What are the other remaining games?

In fact, without having professional trainers, suitable places to practice, enough funds to improve, it will be very hard for players in such countries to complete, even the talented ones won't sustain a lot due to financial difficulties and sometimes costly self funding.. I always questioning why India the second most populous country in the world doesn't compete in Olympics games like Chinese are doing! 5 medals with 0 gold and 2 silver...
Some african countries made the exception in some games thanks to physiology and sometimes for having professional players training abroad.
Overall, it isn't accurate to resume the failure of a nation in one thing but multiple factors.

What about running (or walking, if you consider that a sport)? You can run anywhere and anytime without requiring any equipment or prior training.
And what about football (not American)? Everyone plays football. You just need shoes and a ball. You can make goals out of just about anything you can find.

Seems like it, two great competitors. China is winning in gold, however, the US is higher in everything else and the overall number of medals (91 vs 74). There’re not many competitions left and it truly would be difficult for the US to score 5 more gold medals, but there’s still a chance, especially considering that the US is good in athletics.

In the end, its the race between china and USA as who will receive the most medals. Most of the countries aren't able to win any medal in Olympics and return empty handed.  Sad

My country, Pakistan hasn't been able to win any medal in the last 17 years in Olympics. This year we have a hope of one medal.
Arshad Nadeem reaches javelin throw final and that final will be played on 7 August. Underdeveloped countries does not have that much facilities that they can focus on health and nutritionist as compare to the developed countries.

Being underdeveloped is not the proper excuse. Because I have seen some of the poorest countries winning gold medals. Cuba is currently at 13th position, with 5 gold medals and historically they have performed well in Olympics. They are a very small country with one of the highest poverty levels in the world. Some of the African countries, such as Kenya and Ethiopia also perform well in the games. So the issue is not with the lack of funds, but with the mentality of the people. In India and Pakistan, the importance is being given to non-Olympic sports (such as cricket) and that may be the reason.

Do you think that the people in the sub-continent aren't so fit that they can compete in the international competition ? Also, even if there is potential in the under developed country, it needs to be backed up by the government. If government does not support these sports, then no one will try to make a career in them because there will be no money in it.

Unfortunately, the most popular sports here in our country which is cricket is not included in the Olympics and hence its another drawback for us.

Well sometimes it is difficult, in Venezuela an athlete won second place in BMX, because he himself said that by his own effort he managed to get his sponsorship with RedBull and this helped him a lot, otherwise with a girl Venezuelan who swam in open water, who had no sponsorship nor help of any kind, however she was number 20 in the classification and reacted like this saying everything in a meme since they began to claim that why athletes go and do not win, and she put them in a meme, without sponsorship , without help of any kind, sim places to train, and yet they still make it to the Olympics, apart from the fact that the president of the republic promised him that he was going to give him a house in 2016 it never happened, in a tv interview she said that, and then the same journalist told her that she couldn't say those things.

So the support if you have a lot to do, European and American athletes have their special vitamins, their doctors willing to see them for their control at any time, while those from the third world do not, obviously the results are these that are shown. When they are low-income, this is what happens.

With the few sports disciplines remaining I can bet you that the United States will reduce this gap to 2 or 1 becausethey are strong contenders in what's left. And while we compare China to USA we have to remember that this Olympic was different from the usual we fond of watching, this one we didn't have fans, some athletes did make it because of the pandemic, some athletes were not in their best of shapes because things have just been out of place for most as a result of lockdowns and the pandemic itself.
While we at it with the Olympics we also have to give some recognition to the hosts who have ended the competition with some gold medals and overall are among the top 3.

A difference of five gold medals may seem like it is a lot but we must remember that the United States delegation is very complete, they have elite athletes in almost any sport, so while some of their stars have been unable to get all the gold medals that they were predicting at the beginning of the games they could still surpass China and put themselves as the leaders on the standings, however their biggest problem is that the games are coming to an end, there are only a few days left for them to surpass China and it is unlikely that China will not win a few medals here and there, so it is going to be interesting what happens from now on.

China continues to lead the medal tally and the difference from USA is quite far by almost 10 gold medals, it seems that this time it will be China who will take first place, the bettors who chose USA may have started making new bets on China, unfortunately there is no such bet available in the sportsbook where I bet
source.

We still have 4 days to go, although, major competition had taken place. China had always been arch rival at Olympic with USA, if they take a better position this time they deserve it. US will do everything to review the reason for the fall in position and I think the pandemic might also be responsible.

No reason at all! same with your position I also see that,

everyone has been hit by this pandemic so there's no reason to anyone that they fell short because of this concern, they still have the chance since
the competition still ongoing and there are still games left,

But with that numbers of leads from China the chance to take this one is more possible for them.

Belgium obtained 2 gold medals today with the hockey team winning gold and with Thiam retaining her olympic title. Especially the gold of Thiam is special as she is the first person in her discipline to win olympic gold twice in a row.

Now the olympics have entered the end and some countries have even ended all their matches and maybe now there are only a few countries that will play only a few sports remaining and of course this will make china very safe as the country that topped the most medals in the tokyo olympics this year , and I also agree with your opinion that it looks like America won't be able to beat China's medal tally until the end of this year Olympics.
Here is a provisional list of the top 5 countries with the most medals at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics:

As the end of the Tokyo Olympics competition approaches, we can only watch from the sidelines how the two top tiers (China and the USA) challenge each other every day. Difference of five golds makes China the leader in the event so far. I give the United States a thumbs up as well. Even in sports, two superpower countries compete for position. That's cool!
China and America competed only with a difference of 5 gold in the standings and it must be admitted that Chinese athletes were very good and tough in various sports in the final and semifinal positions.
In addition, the sending of athletes also affects the standings, and the most sending athletes are America with 630 athletes and China with 414 athletes after Japan with 552 athletes, Australia with 459 and Germany with 425.
And I think America still has a chance to lead the standings and it all depends on the hard work and struggle of the athletes.

I also think that way, I believe that China will finally dominate the Olympics.

They are the country that experience covid-19 and they are also the first to neutralize the vaccine so their life is back to normal first compared to the USA who struggle for quite some time before people got vaccinated. In a normal situation, I think the USA will still dominate but let's give credit to China this time around.

This Olympic Games have been very disappointing for the United States, obviously they are still at the top when it comes to the amount of metals that they have won and all of that but a great deal of their favorites to win gold medals have failed, and it will be interesting to know why this is happening, some people could blame the pandemic but the whole world was affected by the pandemic as well so that is not an explanation for what is happening.

It is obvious that the lower number of medals won by the United States are the consequences of the pandemic. Certainly, some of the participants lived in regions where the number of infections was higher and the lockdown was longer, so they had less access to training options. Unfortunately, the consequences of the pandemic will be felt in all aspects of our lives for many years to come.

Disappointment for the Indian fans. Two crucial matches in wrestling lost today. Ravi Kumar Dahiya settled for silver after losing the final to Zavur Uguev of Russia (Men's freestyle 57kg). Deepak Punia lost the bronze medal match to Myles Amine of San Marino (Men's freestyle 86kg). But still, this is one of the best performances ever by the India athletes. The tally as of now stands at 5 (2 silver, 3 bronze). And a few matches are still remaining, such as the third place match between India and England in women's field hockey.
