China continues to lead the medal tally and the difference from USA is quite far by almost 10 gold medals, it seems that this time it will be China who will take first place, the bettors who chose USA may have started making new bets on China, unfortunately there is no such bet available in the sportsbook where I bet
source.

The total number of medals is the same at the moment - this means that the US athletes were slightly less successful in the fight for gold, but the overall level is at least equal. I think the fight is still ahead and the US team has every chance to compete for the first place.
The team with the highest gold total should be at the top, and China has the most gold medals, so they are on the first place. However, combining the total number of medals, the top spot goes to the USA. China, on top with most Gold Medals, won 32 Gold and the United States won 24 Gold. In terms of gold medals, nothing to boast about and the USA barely beats China.

what happened to Argentina, they have only one bronze medal up to this point

LOL.. imagine the disappointment in my country. We are a nation of 1.4 billion people and till now we have 1 silver and 1 bronze to our name. The last time my country won a gold medal in Olympics was long back in Beijing 2008 (Abhinav Bindra, in Men's 10 m air rifle). Last time (Rio 2016) also we had one silver and bronze each. It is really disappointing to see the athletes not being able to win a single gold medal. Even small nations such as Kosovo and Croatia are winning multiple gold medals.

Over the past Olympics, USA always on the lead and this is the first time for China to take an early lead though there are still chance for USA to stay on top if their remaining athletes will able to secure a gold medal.

Apart from swimming, in all the disciplines, the American athletes have won less gold medals when compared to their performance in Rio 2016. Even in track and filed, they were disappointing. The defeat in the men's 100m race just sums it up. They were expected to sweep the gymnastics events, but after Biles pulled out, it was a whitewash for them. Overall, this is turning out to be a horrible edition for the Western nations. Right now China is well ahead, and I don't expect the US to overtake them.

I don't think so either. We're already halfway through the Olympics and most of the competitions where the U.S. generally does very well are already over. So there won't be that many gold medals for the U.S. overall and China's lead is already too big. Overall, however, I am also surprised by the positive performance of Japan.

I would disagree with you here. It is the number of gold medals, which matter the most. Total number of medals may be slightly misleading, as the country sending a larger number of athletes have a good chance of winning more silver and bronze medals. The Americans sent the largest contingent (613 athletes, out of whom 158 in track and field). Being the hosts, Japan only sent 552 athletes to this edition of the Olympics. China only sent 402, far below the number sent by Australia (478) and Germany (425).

I meant that if China was ahead in gold and silver and bronze medals, it would indicate a certain advantage, but now, in my opinion, the situation is approximately equal and the United States has a good chance of taking first place in the team event. Naturally, I understand that the gold medal is the most valuable, but nothing prevents the United States from catching up with the Chinese team in gold medals.

in total number, USA has chances, that is for sure, but counting gold medals, the difference is already high, and it is hard to expect that China will lost this fight in the end
32 gold medals up to this point is probably above their expectations from the beginning, if I remember correctly, 29 golds was crushing point for China on bookies before the game started

Japan is also doing great, as it is their home ground (they have more than half of all medals as golds (19/36), as well as Australia, that has 14 golds

what happened to Argentina, they have only one bronze medal up to this point

She trying enough until attempts 2 (152kg) and 3 (154kg), look hard to bringing up. So far for these Olympic games, she creates good achievements going to the final. Nurul going to be popular like double women's badminton. she is the last athlete from Indonesia, so far 28 athletes and creates 5 achievement medals.

He closed the struggle of Indonesian athletes in this event. His achievements are not bad, we have to appreciate them, he has worked hard even though in the end he failed. Rank 5 is a good ranking in my opinion in the world event.
One gold, one silver and three bronzes put Indonesia in 37th position out of 77 participating countries. In this period I expect a lot from badminton because our athletes are quite good in the world. But indeed other countries have developed a lot.

I'm not really sure what are the outright odds for US to win or for China.

But a 10 gold medal lead, is already huge and it will be hard for the US to overtake China at this point. China still have a lot of athletes line for the gold medal, and I read that the Chinese is very nationalistic about this on-going Olympics (maybe because of the political tension against the US.)

Disappointment for 1.4 billion people, as the Indian men's hockey team lost to Belgium in the semi-finals. There was a lot of hype in the media and even one movie star jumped in to the fray claiming that the team is performing so well because he acted in a film as a hockey coach a few years ago. Anyway, there is still one more opportunity to get a medal, if they win the bronze medal match (scheduled for 5th August). Meanwhile the women's team will be taking on Argentina in the semi-finals tomorrow.

I do not know how to react to all this news in India I read about cricket and hockey,,, you have film stars who were athletes, and politicians who were athletes, and everybody claiming to be expert here and there but then they go and compete against some inferior team supposedly,,, and end up losing.

Good luck to you too,,, with Covid you must be looking for some relief here.

Glad to see PH will once again take a chance for a possible 2 Gold Medal both by boxing (men and women division). These 2 are now assured of a bronze or silver medal regardless.

If they will successfully snatch it, first time again in PH Olympic history. Few medals compare to other countries but a big achievement as PH is not really expected to bag a medal even a bronze one.

Searching on what sports we are able to take a good shot, it's boxing. A total of 7 out of 13 medals in history came from boxing after the final tally.
I do hope that we will see a second and hopefully a third gold but given that their opponents are really good, I think that they will have a hard time fighting, I root more on Nesthy, if she continues her aggressive approach like what she did to Italy I think that she will be able to make it but she has to be careful because a counter could end everything for her.

More than anything, I just hope that Nesthy takes the win here for our 2nd Gold Medal in the country. But even if she losses, her guaranteed medal is enough to acknowledge her skill and prowess. Imagine, most of our olympians received little to no support from the government and the latter relatively demands so much from them.

I do hope that after this year's olympics, our government will acknowledge the need to support financially these olympians since it requires so much effort, time, and resources to produce world-class athletes that compete with other athletes around the globe.

We do have another medal in boxing, it's a secured bronze for Carlo Paalam as he upsets the Rio Gold medalist. He now moves to the quarter-finals, so if he won then he will fight for the gold. So now the Philippines has surpassed its expectations, with 1 gold for Diaz and then Nesthy assured of a silver already but will fight today for the Gold. And then in the men's division, Marcial/Paalam already sure of bronze and if they won their respective bouts, gold or silver next.

For Nurul Akmal it seems he is only in rank 5 he managed to lift 115 kilograms. He has a difference of 25 kilograms from Li Wenwen in first place

Bonus amount has not been confirmed but the related party ensures that there will be a bonus usually around $100-300k USD for gold medal based on 2016 olympics
Especially if this is the only gold medal it will certainly be very appreciated. Still hoping for another gold medal.
actually getting a gold medal is enough happiness, bonus is just for additional achievement. and I think we have over, no medals again, all games were played.

We are already assured of a 3 medal haul. Another boxer has another bronze already and be going up for another potential semi-final in his next fight. Eumir Marcial knock out his opponent in first round with still 49 seconds left.

And if another of our boxer won his next fight, another sure bronze for us courtesy of Carlo Paalam.
4th medal secured as Carlo Paalam won by referee stoppage against the 2016 Rio champ. One more fight for a chance at another gold.

Neshy Petecio's match is just over an hour from now. Hoping for that second gold!

EJ Obiena is another one that will be participating in Pole Vault's Final.

Too bad Carlos Yulo missed out on the bronze by a small margin on Vault.

Speaking of medals. It looks like China is making good progress in the Gold medals.
Could it be that for the first time in many years, the US will not be able to win more gold medals compared to other countries?

I've been watching gymnastic with the US team and I'm enjoying watching them, looking forward also for the Basketball team to win another gold for US. The host country Japan also doing great, I'm also quiet shock not to see Great Britain in top 3 standing when it comes to medal tally.

I think USA and China has got good set of coach and the perfect infrastructure for the players to train themselves. Because, USA is less populated which makes it somewhat easy to find the right person. In a country like China, among the big population it is hard to find the right player. But they've managed to do it well and making history. Same time a country with similar position has won just two medals. This means, is the country lacking infrastructure or it is the defect in selecting the right person.

Don't know about the recent history but it's actually been fun watching these Olympics.  The swimming races were definitely fun to watch.  Hope the track and field holds up to it.  Never really watched swimming before but some of those matches were tense to watch.  Funniest part was watching the Australian coach basically wig out when they won one of the races lol.  Good times lol.

At least, Ginting got a bronze medal, he won without much fighting, congrats.

Finally a gold medal for Indonesian women's doubles. This is new history, they were able to reach the final and win. CHEN Qing Chen and JIA Yi Fan lost in straight sets. Chinese doubles pair lost 21-19, 21-15. They are the fourth seed and representatives of Indonesia are not seeded.
That's right, GreyAp was really very cool. They are always the mainstay of Indonesia in Women Double.
Their struggle against strong enemies before reaching the final was very tense, but also very exhilarating.
Like Du Yue / Li Yin Hui, Lee Sohee / Shin Seungchan, and moreover is Yuki Fukushima / Sayaka Hirota as number 1 in the world, where previous meetings GreyAp have always lost to them.

And finally, they got a gold medal after defeating the women's doubles from China. Really a thrilling match.

Likewise, Ginting struggled coolly and finally won a bronze medal.

Unfortunately, none of Indonesia's mainstay men's doubles got medals. Even though they are strong men's doubles players. But it's okay, salute them.

Congratulations to Indonesia and especially to them.
