Maria Sharapova has been eliminated in the first round of the Qatar Open by Monica Niculescu beating here in three sets with 4-6,6-4,6-3 victory. This was Sharpova’s first appearance in the Qatar Open since 2013.

Isn't it she was given a wildcard in Qatar Open? She didn't take advantage of it. lol.

I think age is catching up with her. Now in her 30's, she is slowly losing to the young generation and I think that the somewhat the drug related ban is still on her head that's why she can't perform as she uses to be.

She won the first set though, but after that, everything went against her. I say given a few more tournaments, if she didn't perform well then I guess Maria S can call it a day. Maybe she can concentrate on her modelling career.  Grin

I think she has been given too much attention this year after she was allowed to play again. She even went to play in a center court as far as I can remember. So I think the organizers are putting here in the spotlight so that the women's tennis could regain its glory.

Sadly though, she is already past his prime and she retire. Same with the men's, young lions are trying to upstage. And there will come a time that we will totally forgotten how she took the tennis world by storm.

Roger Federer is playing in Rotterdam against Ruben Bemelmans.
So it should be an easy win for him against the Belgian to advance as it is only the first leg of the event.

I expect Alexander Zverev to make it farther this time but someone said Stan Wawrinka was defeated in the Sofia Open. So don't know how far he will make it this tournament.
I do remember him not even getting past the first round in the Australian Open cause I had a bet on him to win that match. Undecided
I too think Zverev will go till finals . He always plays well in these tournaments ( hard court) , except grand slam in which he sucks idk why maybe because it's pressure.
Of course in grand slam event handling that pressure is not easy especially a young player like Zverev. it needs a lot of experience. but in this tournament, I think he can make it. and now he is in tremendous form maybe he will reach finals.

Federer has asked for a wildcard to participate in the Rotterdam tournament next week!
if he reaches the semifinal he will return to the first place in the atp ranking and he will be the "oldest" n.1 in history!

Is Roger Federer really gunning for the number 1 spot here? Or he must take care of his health first?

But I will be happy if he will reclaim that number 1 spot. Nadal already did, so I guess Roger should have his turns at the spot this year. If he marches to the quarter-finals, the possible opponent will be compatriot Stan Wawrinka. This will be another classic.

As for the Davis Cup, USA will have the upper hand against Belgium here. I will also go with Spain, Croatia and France.

I think that for Federer it is too big a chance that it can not be wasted. he only has to win 3 matches (of which the first 2 easy) to return first and only Wawrinka seems a difficult obstacle.

Probably is. Stan is the only obstacle between him and the #1. And yes, I have to agree that it will be a welcome news to see him back at the top of the tennis world.

I think he is trying something a little different then last year and join a few more tournaments. Last year we saw him pick the tournaments spread out to give his body enough time to recover for the Grand Slams but maybe he feels that his body is much better this year. I think it would be great to see him return to the number #1 spot because he does deserve it and make even more history by becoming the oldest number #1.

Yes, last year we witnessed him taking sabbatical and just enter few tournaments. Maybe this time his body is well adopted to the grind and feeling very good at the moment specially coming from a win. Yes. everyone wanted to see him reclaim the top spot even for a brief moment.

Well he did say that after his Australian Open win that his body feels better then ever so this is why we might see him play in many more tournaments. Another thing that I just though of and that is that he could be saying farewell to the fans and playing in as many tournaments this year as he can. Then if all goes well for Federer he can go on next year but only play in the Grand Slams.

I am very sure that he is going to even the tournament itself and returning to the number one ranking is just because he has been playing very superbly and he deserves to be there.

I think he just wants to test the water here. I don't think he's aiming for the #1 spot here, but trying to see how he's body is recovering and responding from the grueling tournament he just won.

So its gonna be a win-win for him. If he reaches semifinals then he is #1 again, (yay), if not then he will go back to the drawing board and probably will take longer rest again and just choose which tournaments will give him high rewards.

here are the Davis Cup quarter-finals to be played between 6 and 8 April:

Italy vs France
Germany vs Spain
Kazakistan vs Croatia
Usa vs Belgium

My favorites are France, Germany, Croatia and USA, although we will need to understand which players will be there for each country!
I am gonna go with France, Spain , Croatia and Belgium. USA without any doubts have got very good players but sometimes they fail to deliver at big stage .

Belgium with Goffin is very strong but I think that the USA playing at home and being able to choose the surface are slightly favorites, surely it is one of the most interesting matches.

Australia V Germany was a great battle with Germany easily winning in the end. Nick Kyrgios was not at his best during this Davis Cup match up and it started to show in the final match against Alexander Zverev where he lost in straight sets even losing the 2nd set where he should of won.

So will all the top players be ready for the next big tournament?
I am waiting for Andy Murray to come back into tennis from his hiatus.
Since he missed the last two tournaments from when I remember him last to play in one. Undecided
I am personally getting tired of Roger Federer winning all of them.

I will never get tired of watching Federer win tournaments Smiley His game style is closest to perfection that anybody managed to achieve in this sport. Meaning attractive, short points, easy for the body (less injuries)....

On the other hand I would like to see all players, especially top ones back on the tour and 100% ready (Djokovic, Murray, Nadal, Wawrinka, Nishikori, Raonic...)

Same for me! The more tournaments Federer wins, the happier I am  Smiley. Last news I have read is that Djokovic is close to be 100% fit. Nadal is also almost back from his injury.
