Come on it does happen like that, and with bitcoin having over 40% in market share its practically imposed unless a centralized coin joins the race and we all choose to back it up, eth might over take btc in this circumstance as investors seem to be more comfortable with a centralized system. 
ETH won't pass BTC on 2019, there's still a big gap in terms of cap and supply.
of course the etherium will not be able to compete with Bitcoin in the price category. But if the demand for Bitcoin falls, Bitcoin will lower the price itself, Which will give a good push for the etherium.

Maybe your just saying that because the ETH is currently exploding in the market and it shows great performance now in the market but it doesn't means that it will surpass and dethrone the BTC, BTC is still the most popular and the most valuable coin in the market. 
What do you mean by pass BTC, is it the development, adoption, price, marketcap, or what? For development, it seems like Ethereum platform already pass BTC on that. They are expanding their features and we can see the result is mass adoption through ICO and ERC20 token, but for price and marketcap, it seems like impossible for any coins has more marketcap than bitcoin, at least in the next 10 years. Bitcoin will still be on the top, until crypto going mainstream.
