I remember Minereum used to be so big (I mean popular). If I remember correctly they were... what was that mining contracts that pay you forever? Something like that it was. I was quite sad for missing out their... what was it... airdrop? something like that. Anyway it is dead like the rest now.

The list is somewhat surprising for me as i thought Ethereum would be the top and most discussed altcoin here also ripple has big community but seems to lack activity here.
It is also surprising to see that some newer projects are there like swapzilla and payaccept as well. I wish them all the best as their supporters want to see them successful.

While the discussion is not always of high quality, it's pretty much 100% organic. Also not listed in the bump service thread linked here above.

I don't really visit much of these ANN threads or if I did, I would just use the links provided to read directly to their websites.
So that only adds with views. But just like you said earlier, it cannot be determined for the year only.
Maybe, it is just a good way to determine the activity of the team behind it with their replies.
But also it cannot be sorted out that way and needs browsing to calculate it.
Thank you though for this great effort. Might as well check some ANN.

it is interesting to see the position of Ethereum on this list, someone would thought that Ethereum is widely popular, but there is a tone of project above it, if we count from this list, and with that said, i think that bumping services are very influential when creating a list like this one
must say that i am interested in number of merits given in IXC project, think that it is high above possible quality and popularity of that project, but will check it accordingly, just to make sure

Using overall posts might be unreliable for rating popularity on bitcointalk. Bitcointalk was a very active forum for most projects that started in 2015-2017 when therewas little hype for telegram. It is believed that Telegram has more influence on cryptocurrency but have not seen CZ binance active on binance telegram, neither Vitalik and many more in other relevant groups. It is discouraging how most of the influencers are distancing from the community after raising fund and are difficult question their decisions .
Almost bitcointalk forum is active popularity but most interactive information about bitcoin and altcoin is in telegram, every day more than hundred thousand people discussing about bitcoin and altcoin, exactly you check how many people online in Binance telegram group. We can't found thousand people are online just the same time in bitcointalk forum, but keep profitable with bitcoin as to earn many project reward like bounty campaign and airdrop project.

Monero only at 48 and Dash at #1. Did not know so many people were into Dash,,, feels a bit weird to me who always knew about Monero but not about its competitors to see the vast difference in position. But like you said,,, probably not really. If I see only the first page of altcoins, which I usually do, then I see maybe only 1% of all altcoins.

What I got in this thread is that, no matter how many posts you have, popular your coin is in Bitcointalk, it doesn't correlate to how well you will be ranked in the official rankings when it comes to value. Dash is #31 based on CMC.
yeah ofc because this was only done on btt forum but the outside was different . the outside is where the performance of the coin really matters but shilling by this forum is helpful because as we see , the coins are already popular and still included on the top rank list even if not the highest rank but stiill its hard to achieve such spot because of the huge competition going on on this market . dash coin isnt an ordinary coin thats why it got alot of post and those post it got are not bumped by newbie accounts unlike to other new coins that are only being shilled but people people are still not interested on them

So damn true, at least for Altcoin boards. There are so many coins that I have never heard of but rank high in your list, for example Idena, Emirex, MyTVchain, IXCoin, EPIC or DevCoin... Even "merits send to posts made in 2020" criteria can't properly filter quality altcoins, while merit seems like the most complete filter in other boards. I think basing popularity here in Bitcointalk would make more sense if you count it by how much users engage in it, at least basing on the very definition of "Popularity" from google. Views can be repeated and people can look but not care.

If the metric for popularity is the number of posts, definitely most spammy thread wins. They win the crown of "Most Shilled Altcoin in Bitcointalk"You can actually determine the thread being shilled or not and exclude it on the list. Most the thread that have an active discussion was really organic like Dash because developers and the Dash enthusiast are pretty active on there thread. The views can't be used as basis for being most popular because its easier to cheat it by using auto refresh plugins on browser. So definitely the interaction on the thread is the best factor to used on this case.

As for CMC - I wouldn't expect it to match Bitcointalk. My goal was to find out what is popular here regardless of what other rankings are, but I don't think I succeeded with that. For example I would have expected XMR being more popular, perhaps ETH too.

I don't think the date matters that much... I deliberately counted only posts made in 2020 so that only recent popularity would be evaluated. And it's kinda moot what "the top" really means. Post count is clearly not a good metric since there are bumping services still operating as hosseinimr93 mentioned. Merit count - meh... some of those top-merited threads have some weird things going on too - for example the IXCoin thread has one merit source sending a lot of merits there, and BSV thread merits are mostly sent to people criticizing it (and it has two threads for some reason - reported one as duplicate).

Even though thread bumping rules have been changed about a year ago to discourage low-value posts, there still seems to be some of that bumping going on.
They either don't know how bumping system works or they have only hired some spammers to make fake volume. Many of these threads can be found in the topic created by Rikafip.

I was trying to figure out which altcoins are most popular here on Bitcointalk but I think I ended up collecting a list of altcoins that are shilled in the weirdest ways. Even though thread bumping rules have been changed about a year ago to discourage low-value posts, there still seems to be some of that bumping going on.
Here is what I did:
Top 100 altcoin and token announcement threads by post count in 2020
Here is what I did:
- Counted posts made in 2020 on altcoin and token announcement boards.
- Counted users who made those posts.
- Counted merits sent to those posts (again, only to posts made in 2020).
- Calculated top 100 of threads by post count (see below) and another top 100 by merit count (see the second post of this thread).
